  • Many of you watching have no idea how to build a pergola like this, and some of you do. But, just like everything in life, once you see it, it's easy to understand how to do it. We have never done a pergola that had a finish like this; solid water proof roof, fancy light, heaters, fans, and an amazing ceiling that is super high-end. But now that we saw how it's done, it's easy for us to do it, and the next one we do will be even easier. So yes, I did lose money on this pergola, yes the customer did get upset and I had to fire the sub. But now, we have gained a skill, and the next project is going to be a breeze.

The company I’m a foreman at is probably a 5-7m annual company. (Not in cali) About 40-45 employees. 5 in the office, 10 on maintainance and groundskeeping, about 15 masons, and 15 on the construction end of things. We’ve usually got about 4-5 bigger jobs at once (200-400k jobs). 5-10 smaller jobs, and booked for the rest of the year. It’s definitely not for every company, but having multiple jobs at once if you can handle it is much more lucrative and can be more effective. If you’re waiting on materials for one job, you can send a crew to do a planting or paving job for a few days. The masons are waiting on stone? Send them to do blockwork somewhere else. That way, there’s no hold times and everyone has a job 5 days a week. Obviously applewood doesn’t have as many people, but imagine being at a job, and you’re waiting 3 weeks for something that’s special ordered? What do you have your guys do for that 3 weeks? Gotta have smaller stuff for them to do in the meantime. Just my 2 cents

That’s exactly the way to do it. I’m transitioning to multiple jobs on the go. I typically have 2 to 3 on but I’m ramping it up slowly.
I met a home builder on a job and he gave me some great tips and now he is a bit of a mentor to me.

Pro Tip: I run a custom architectural welding/metal company & the Very best lifetime pergolas are all welded aluminum post & framework design with SS hardware & a high end hardwood such as Ipe or potentially a more cost effective wood to finish it off. I can build them as strictly a sunshade design or a fully waterproof canopy. I aesthetically blend & sand all weld joints + the entire canopy before powdercoat 👌 my final product is literally seamless and flawless and will never leave rust stains or deteriorate in a general lifetime built correctly. You can run electrical through the tube work hidden with outlets as well as ceiling fans, LED lights etc. it’s all in the package but sky’s the limit in this custom type of work🙏🏻🤙

You didn't mention that any structure with a solid roof such as that one, whose roof is larger than '10x'12 like that one has to be Engineered and the technical drawing must be approved by the building department, also must be permitted.
That project would Normally come with architectural drawings approved by the codes department.
With drawings and specifications in hand. There would be few errors.
P.S. only a licensed plumber can install a gas line. You can go learn how to do it, but you can't install it without a plumbing contractors license, same with electrical. Your C27 doesn't allow you to install gas or electrical lines yourself.
You are allowed to have multiple licenses.
Also, all construction jobs residential or commercial costing $500 or more require contracts. If a licensed contractor gets caught hiring an unlicensed person to do a job costing more than $500.00 that's a mandatory 90 days in jail plus a fine.
The other contractor probably doesn't use contracts because he doesn't have a contractor's license and it would be illegal for him to contract jobs..T on the other hand is responsible and has no recourse because he can't sue an unlicensed worker that he contracted with.
If you're doing professional work legally, none of these problems typically happen.
It's very rare for one company to have continuous non stop project problems. I think it's possible Ts business is cursed. It's really an incredible amount of bad luck.

Also when you become a business owner, you just deal with more shady people from my experience. It's rare to find good quality work these days and it really makes you become more aware but sometimes you just can't catch them all. This will be a learning experience for Tigren and i'm sure he won['t make the same mistakes again.
