I watch the Apollo Theater on late night tv back in the 80s when I was up working on a school project.

True that not just Black entertainers embraced the Apollo. I remember seeing NKOTB on Showtime at the Apollo. And they slayed it!

There was a similar theater in Phila. called the Uptown. It had the same kind of energy. Sadly it's been closed for a long time. 😢

Motown founder Berry Gordy sent all of his acts to the Apollo to get a response. If you pleased the Apollo crowd you had a chance and if you did not you needed some work. The temptation, The Supremes, and other famous acts from Motown had to get crowd approval before Mr. Gordy would take them seriously. The Jackson 5 was an unknown act when Motown sent them there (did not even have a record out yet) and as they say the rest is HISTORY!!!

I randomly bought a t shirt from the Apollo last month. Odd that this is a segment.

A theater did no t shape American culture, it was the African American people and their talent despite being in the midst of overt racism that shaped American culture. The Apollo and other theaters like it around the country were simply designed to exploit that talent by the music industry.
