This is EXACTLY how I've been going about cutting for the past year I'm down from 240+ to 170. Friday/Saturday I allow myself the most calories out of the 7 days, Sunday is just shy of a maintenance day & then Monday-Thursday are in a deficit with cardio + strength training 4-5 days per week. Mixing up the calories allows me to enjoy the weekends with friends & I'm not left feeling like I'm missing out on life it's way easier to just buckle down for the week days than trying to be perfect every single day
My brother laughed at me because I tracked my calories for 2 years and he said he couldn’t be bothered with tracking. I lost 30lbs, he gained 15lbs. When he asked me how I did it I told him exactly what you said in this video, I hated being fat more than I hated tracking calories. This is the 2nd video of yours I watched and now I am a subscriber!
Mate, I piss myself laughing at the way you deliver your videos. You talk 'with' us, and not 'at' us. I have been training for years (Im a 44 year old middle aged sad teacher), and your videos are factually superb. Please keep it up...Wicks (or whatever hes called) aint got nothing on you! Cheers
Love your channel and straight forward “real talk” approach. Finally motivated me to stop being a lazy fat slob and change things. Started out on the first week of November 2022, was 169.5kg at 196cm (yeah, I know, I am a fat, albeit tall slob). Dieted down to 157.5kg by end of January. Signed up for gym on 5th of February 2023, so almost 3 months now. Went from 157kg down to 144kg right now in those 3 months. First 6 weeks were 3 days of full body splits, just to get used to training (also first weeks were brutal in terms of muscle pain during recovery). Last month switched to push/pull/legs for 6 days. Never felt better or stronger in my life, at 32 I feel better than I did when I was 20. Also getting insane progress in terms of muscle growth/strength. When I started I could barely bench 12x3 just the barbell. Now I am up to 70kg. Same with deadlifts - could barely deadlift 50kg at 12x3, now I am up to 140kg. But still ways to go, need to lose at least 35-40kg of fat. Hopefully in a year or two I will achieve my goal, but changing my lifestyle with diet and going to gym gave me lot of discipline to keep going.
I've lost weight before by eating in a 700-calorie deficit on weekdays and eating (mainly drinking to be honest) around maintenance at the weekend. I'd also try to do some form of cardio on the Saturday morning, whether that be a hike, bike ride or just some time on the treadmill or cross trainer. Worked a treat and I still got to go out and enjoy my weekends.
As someone that is trying to incorporate movement into his day and on a journey of getting from 22 stone to the teens, it's always good/nice to listen to straight forward strategy's that will help you get there. It' always making the smart choices and what I believe is the "One step at a time, and you will get to your destination"
I was 20st 7p when I started listening to this guy, I’m down to 15st 11p. This no bullshit simple calorie deficit, cut all the other fitness industry bollocks out does work.
Love this. I think other women can relate in that I try to use this mentality on a monthly basis. I’ve found it’s way easier to manage my calories and be proud of how I eat at the beginning of my cycle and towards the end it’s much harder so I’ve started planning my eating habits knowing this and giving myself grace at the end of my cycle but staying responsible at the beginning. Maybe too much information, but it’s too relatable (in my head). Idk what the ratio is men to women that watch these videos.
Another great one, James. People that talk about intuitive eating and having never tracked are usually telling a lie, have never been overweight or have never worked with someone that has struggled with weight!
J Dawg, don’t ever change mate. Love the fact your still true to yourself after all these years. You’ve motivated me to make some changes to three years of shit Covid habits. Thanks man, H!
So good. Even with nightshift - totally relatable. Some nights are easy and I don’t even feel hungry others are a shocker - but adjust balances and move on. Easy to manage lower calories on sleep days.
3rd video I've watched of yours and have subscribed... I think the way you describe things are spot on and easy to understand, of course your sense of humour and john bull approach is hilarious! 😂😂😂 I'm a 52 years young woman and up to now have lost 2 stone following a keto lifestyle, which works for me, I still have another stone to lose but in the meantime i also want to change my body composition through weight training. I know your videos are more targeted towards men but is stil great to get some useful tips and tricks from your good self. Thank you 😊
I eat what I want, the only thing I pay attention to is the sum of calories and that the protein at the end of the day is normal. For the first two years I had a psychotic attitude, but now after 9 I approach it less restrictive xD
James, the youtube algorithm delivered you to my in box this morning. My wife and I watched several of your videos and were both informed and entertained. I’ve ‘liked’ and subscribed and we look forward to your next video. 👍🏻
I've maintained my weight for the last few years with the mantra "warrior monk through the week, all bets are off Saturday and Sunday". The calorie deficit I create Monday to Friday pays for the weekend.
I have a calorie target of 3100 on rest days and 3300 on training days. The way I handle this is that any deficit or surplus at the end of the day rolls over into the next. If I ate too much, I already start the next day with those excess calories accounted for. If I ate too little, I start the next day with a negative calorie value. This even works on a cut when I massively overeat and drink at a festival and then average out the excess over the next couple days.
This is a great vid. Strangely enough, this is what I do when I want to get lean. Eat super clean Monday to Thurs. Still eat clean......ish over the weekend. That accompanied by my standard 25km on the exercise bike 4 days a week
I just eat around 150kcal less during the week so on Friday/Saturday I can have a burger or kebab and few whiskies to pretend I can tell the difference after 5th. Also, on the day I go out with boiz I do some cardio. -10kg from mid Feb, social life - unchanged.
Great advice and one of your funniest yet! I find my eating habits exactly like you said, good Mon-Thu, rubbish Fri-Sun. Lucky I'm on your current programme and will be an adonis in 12 weeks. . . or maybe just a bit slimmer round the waist and a bit more muscle :)
Thats insane, ive lost 9kg in the past few months, am in the best shape ive been in since i was 24 (im 40 now 😢) just hit my target of 80ish kg weight by doing exactly what you say in this video. On the day i hit my target you release this video!!! Feels like voodoo shit to me 😂.You hit the nail on the head with this one, fair play
Ha! The weekends are what keeps me healthy! During the week I’m so slammed with work that I eat out more and am more likely to miss the gym due to overtime or just generally being stretched, but weekends… weekends are my holy healthy time when I can spend 90 mins at the gym, ensure I get proper sleep and spend time preparing the most nutritious food possible.

It took me a while to realise that it was weekly calories that matter, not daily ones. Because you don’t really lose weight daily (thanks a bunch keto! 🙄) you lose weight over prolonged periods so the calories have to be good over an extended period. I calorie counted with my current PT for a year. I’ve since stopped because it is now ingrained in me what correct portion sizes look like. It’s all going in the right direction! 💪🏽🐻🙌🏽🙏🏽
I'm a chef so surrounded by good food all day trying my best not to pick, weekends make no difference to me, I'm consistently inconsistent 🙃the small changes made the difference, zero calorie drinks, low calorie sauces, neat up etc etc. Lost 38 kg through COVID (no kitchen work) so trained hard and ate well at home instead.
I've used myfitness pal every day Since January of 2015. When you track your food every day it becomes 2nd nature and it's really not that hard to do. I've also manage to maintain my weight After I lost it and I've gotten my waistline down to 31" and when I started it was at 48"
Biggest hurdle for me was just getting in the habit of tracking. Once that became a part of my life a lot of the other stuff came together. Love the videos mate and thanks as always for the education. 🤙🤙
I simply love the no bullshit approach! “You fat trollop” 🤣🤣 but if I’m honest, yeh I’ll take that because sometimes being ‘cruel to be kind’ is the only way people get the message and flicks a switch in their brain to realise and change that mindset. It won’t work for everyone but from my personal experience it does. Keep these videos up James! New subby but enjoy every one so far 👍👍
This is why for the Weekend, I only allow more caloric intake with a cheat meal on Sundays. It allows me to reward my self for my hard work without compromising my weight loss goals.
It’s funny but true! The less I eat (currently fasting and also cutting carbs, but this is to help with my epilepsy) the more weight I lose! It’s simple really but hard to break bad habits. Takes a lot of willpower at first then you get used to it. I am seeing results (losing about 2lb per week and have 12 to go) so that motivates me, I’m also exercising more (this helps me mentally more than for losing weight) and can see and feel muscle definition and just don’t feel so lethargic! If you really want it, you can do it! Most who fail just don’t put in the mental effort (kick up the arse when you go to eat those biscuits or sweets between meals etc) Love these videos btw ❤
Gotta say I'm beginning to like you dude. You're funny af. I like how you accept that normal people don't behave guess men's health magazine expects you to.
Good to know that I have been doing this for decades. I knew a long time ago that weekly calories were more important than daily and I know you will hate me saying this but Weight Watchers kind of trains you to do this. You save your points for special events. I do intermittent fasting 18/6 to help restrict my snack window. I’m 54 and I’m about 10lb overweight because I acted like a complete slob during the Pando. Lost all my fitness and motivation. My problem is that I’m in Peri Meno and now my restriction days are under 1000 calories which I KNOW is bad. But I had a PT in 2017 who told me to eat 1200 and I didn’t lose any weight. I got super fit though and stayed on the ski slopes that winter. I go to the gym and i try and stay active (NEAT).
@@adamsowa5927 obviously not. It assumes you have common sense and will stop eating when you are full. I can’t so when i did it i did the fully counted version where everything has points value. Giving free food just encourages over eating. It’s why Slimming world doesn’t work apart from dumb rules about whole banana’s and mashed ones lol
Most people don´t spend their entire weekend partying, it´s just friday and/or saturday night. That´s when tactics like IF and OMAD can help. If you know you´re going to party on saturday, just don´t eat anything the whole day and save your 2500 calories for a giant pizza and 7 beers.

In black and white there James ....zero excuses.... It's not anyone else's fault ...no one else to blame and no one cares. Just do it right and results will happen.
I average 2000 calories a day to stay in a defecit. In reality I eat at 1800, make sure my nutrition is on point and that gives me more than 1000 calories to play with at the weekend.
HAHAHAHHAHA I come here for the laughs. Honestly. Truth with humour is a winning combination. We all need to keep accountable if we really want something. Thanks for the video and LOLs! 😆
I like to run during the week (I’m addition to the gym and deficit) to bank calories for The Weeknd. If I don’t bank enough calories to cover the weekend, I clean it up with more running on Monday .
I don't track my calories at all...I've lost around 18kilos. I just eat a decent meal and workout more and on weekends I train Muay Thai and then eat like a monster. Not sure if its the right approach but seems to be working!!
I’m a good boy during the week, but come the weekend I totally spak out. I don’t eat carbs during the week and never drink, but then the weekend arrives and especially Sunday at my local market in southern France where I know all the restaurant owner and cheese man! Shit! And yes, I’ll start again on Monday 😢😢😢
Just subbed. You humor makes these great and real! It's crazy to me how many people I know won't track calories to lose weight saying it doesn't work long term and they don't feel like it. I say the same shit you did that it's not supposed to be forever! I'm down 32 lbs since top of the year tracking my calories. Works like a charm.
Or in my case, eat breakfast and lunch, maybe a snack, get a text saying "you coming out", go out, drink 1000 calories of vodka lemonade, find myself too black out wasted to have my dinner and protein shake and face plant in bed, 3000 calories down but only 2000 of them were somewhat nutritious, the rest just went straight to the belly and left my muscles empty and wonder why I still look skinny fat
I work as a security guard here in Christchurch, New Zealand. I remember you coming here a couple months ago but at that time I didn’t know who were. Wish I knew who you were back then as I would have came to your show
I do one meal a day (dinner) and if going out say for a Saturday lunch I will have my last meal on Thursday night and nothing on Friday and works well for me 😊😎
James you absolute fkin legend, I love this type of no BS content you're putting out lately, keep it going and thanks for the friendly reminders to not be a lazy pr*ck haha!
Makes sense but if you are also being regimental at the weekends and not Billy Big Balls and remain on track for 7 days then all should be good. Also if you train harder and longer at the weekends as you have more available active time, then you can offset. As you keep telling us it's Calories In vs Calories out over 7 days. Keep the deficit and it should be happy days, right?

Such a helpful video, thank you!
Absolute legend! Best information out there
Just subbed. You humor makes these great and real! It's crazy to me how many people I know won't track calories to lose weight saying it doesn't work long term and they don't feel like it. I say the same shit you did that it's not supposed to be forever! I'm down 32 lbs since top of the year tracking my calories. Works like a charm.
honestly fkn love your vids, youre so relatable
“The man who goes to bed with itchy bum, will wake up with smelly finger” 🤣
Or in my case, eat breakfast and lunch, maybe a snack, get a text saying "you coming out", go out, drink 1000 calories of vodka lemonade, find myself too black out wasted to have my dinner and protein shake and face plant in bed, 3000 calories down but only 2000 of them were somewhat nutritious, the rest just went straight to the belly and left my muscles empty and wonder why I still look skinny fat
He's got a fair point.
I work as a security guard here in Christchurch, New Zealand. I remember you coming here a couple months ago but at that time I didn’t know who were. Wish I knew who you were back then as I would have came to your show
ah legend thank you mate, I'll be back!
Class video. Favourite one in a while
Absolutely LOVED this Vid! you made me lol a few times - i needed that. thanks!
“You put humans in groups, they eat more”
That’s the most honest thing i have heard on the internet today lmao
It is eating after my evening meal that makes me fat I get hungry of an evening.
Some class content coming out of late James 👌🏻
So good with the Bunnings quote and Australia haha
Love this. I’m too old now not to enjoy the weekends.
Barcelona !! Lol 😂
In all seriousness though such a crucial point !!! Great video, informative and super funny too.
I do one meal a day (dinner) and if going out say for a Saturday lunch I will have my last meal on Thursday night and nothing on Friday and works well for me 😊😎
What are you eating for your one meal per day? How many calories roughly in said meal ? Thanks
I don’t count calories but eat to satiety and LCHF food like meat 🥩 , eggs 🥚 and some veggies 🥦 @@thebesttheworst2277
Really good points however the dominos ad after the video got me feeling some kinda way
James you absolute fkin legend, I love this type of no BS content you're putting out lately, keep it going and thanks for the friendly reminders to not be a lazy pr*ck haha!
I lol when he said Americans go to Costco for a roast chicken. So spot on
Not mentioning a 2 beer limit at the weekend strategy was an oversight. (Unlimited spirits)
5:56 This man knows his Confucius
Thank you for the video!
Damn im a AFM aswell, I love that! lost 100lbs, now trying to see if i can see abs this summer.. I have that as a midlife crises goal
The lols make it much easier for this chubster to soak up whats being said, am sure im not alone in that.
Cheers 😁👍
