A flashy guitar player? No. Used to have his moments in early Dire Straits on that, but definitely a moving guitar player always. Definitely has a style. If you just played this song, and did not mention the artist, I would know it is Knopfler.
Absolutely beautiful music as ever by Mark - his instrumental music never fails to move me. Was this from an album or soundtrack? I only know the tune because of the Christian hymn which it suits perfectly: When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.
It's been everywhere that "the English" have, I think. :) It's originally a Scottish folk song titled Waly, Waly, Gin Love Be Bonny (although more commonly today "The water is wide"). It is believed to date back sometime in the 1600s. Due to the age of the song, as well as the place of it's conception, it's been a heavy influence on other similar songs - for example Carrickfergus, a traditional Irish song, but also The Voyage Home, an Australian version. You'll find many renditions, versions, derrivatives, etc. that all suit the same general hymn and in many cases use the chorus lines more or less directly, as well as often including the symbolic reference to leaning against an oak. It has been used in a few films, although it obviously doesn't originate from one. I'd guess Google would be able to produce a list. :)
If you don't believe in God your soul is lost. There is a HEAVEN AND HELL. You can live in peace or be controlled by the Devil. You decide? I myself would be in peace.
The song has nothing to do with Christian hymns or anything of the kind. It's a love song from Scotland wriitten as only they can write them. Plaintive, sensual, lilting. The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Neither have I wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall cross my true love and I I lean'd my back against an oak Thinking it was a mighty tree But first it bent and then it broke So did my love prove false to me I put my hand in some soft bush Thinking the sweetest flow'are to find I prick'd my finger to the bone And left the sweetest flow'are behind O love is handsome and love is kind Gay as a jewel when it is new But love grows old and waxes cold And fades away like the morning dew The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Neither have I wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall cross my true love and I

Mark Knopfler recorded this after his good friend, Chet Atkins, passed away. They worked together on several collaborations.

The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I
I lean'd my back against an oak
Thinking it was a mighty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me
I put my hand in some soft bush
Thinking the sweetest flow'are to find
I prick'd my finger to the bone
And left the sweetest flow'are behind
O love is handsome and love is kind
Gay as a jewel when it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew
The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I
Thank you.

The same chord progression and tune actually goes for the song sung by U2 - Van Diemens Land ...I guess it’s a folk tune then...

"Yup great Mark Knopfler is a superb musician BUT".... which negates everything before the "but".
