It's a great show overall with an incredibly underrated dub, but beware of a hideous batch of episodes in the second half called the "island/Africa episodes." Those were never supposed to be in the show and are obviously detached from the rest of the thorough line. However, eps 1-22, 30, 31, and 35-39 (the preferred way to view it IMO) is the stuff of excellence.
I'm so glad you picked this up! I missed out on the old DVDs. And I'm happy I can now collect this series without having to resort to torrents or bootlegs
Holy cow that dub is grotesque! Animation looks great though and the concept looks fun. Looking forward of checking this one out in it's original language.
0:50 This brief scene caught my attention, as the cel painting seems off - namely the colors being lighter and in some places overlap the lines (such as the white in Nadia's eyes). This is something I do not expect with a studio like Gainax. It then reminded me of info I read in a Wikipedia article on former Gainax co-founder and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto: "According to Gainax co-founder Toshio Okada, Sadamoto's feelings towards Koreans were already a factor of animosity during the production of Nadia, during which he blamed outsourced Korean animators for oscillations of quality during the series' 'Island Arc' and would go on angry tirades disparaging their work, leaving the studio on his motorcycle. Anno believed this was part of miscommunication in the production process, and Okada attributed it to cultural differences." Is this one of those episodes of said arc?
Joke's on y'all; I got my copy when Sentai had it. If you want to see the inspiration for Pokemon's Team Rocket, buy this anime. Just know that you should skip a plethora of non-canon episodes in the second half. Also has the best aerial battle I've ever seen.

I literally found this show while reading someone’s list on Top 10 Tanned/Brown girls in anime 🙃 lol But Nadia was Number 1….. So I Investigated…… GOD BLESS MY OTAKU FAMILY
I think she's coded as either Indian or Romani towards the beginning (but neither she nor the other characters actually have any idea), her actual backstory is quite a bit more complicated and dare I say a little convoluted, but extremely interesting.
I wish Streamline Pictures did more than eight episodes because… well I wanted to hear Cheryl Chase’s voice for the character of Marie. For those who don’t know who Cheryl Chase is you probably know her better as Angelica Pickles from the Rugrats.
It would have been interesting, to be true, but I personally think Margaret Cassidy just edges her out: she just has a very natural quality and sounds more authentic which IMO sells the character. I thought she was terrific from the start, and honestly I can't imagine anybody else voicing this role. (I know it may be controversial to say this, but I prefer Margaret to her Japanese counterpart; no offense to Yuko, but she was too shrill for my tastes.)
@@Turnajon Since it’s much older and bigger than GKIDS, NHK probably owns Nadia, because Hayao Miyazaki had sent his Nadia prototype to one of its former CEOs decades ago. I Actually Liked this show better than Neon Genesis. Kind of wish he'd revisit this or get permission from his old Boss to Adapt the rest of Nausica than making more Neon Genesis. though I heard He's busy with Live Action Films these Days.
Disappointing that this new issue has DNR, but it is nice to have this classic back. Also, before anyone goes after me, hear me out. I've always considered Nadia's dub to be underrated. Always have, always will. I mean no disrespect to the Japanese VAs. But to me it just sounds more natural to have the kids sound like kids authentically as this dub does. Yes, the accents are hit and miss at least in the beginning, but that's a flaw that gradually disappears as the dub goes on. I quickly got accustomed to it after about 3 episodes or so, and now honestly, I can't watch the show any other way. I DID see some episodes one time in Japanese, but was it better than the dub? No, only different. So sorry, but I stand firmly behind what I said about the dub being good.
Finally there's a legitimate restoration of this anime except that dub in this trailer. Man this anime had some great adventure when I'm watching this. The plot was great imo, it starts peaceful then the story gets darker when watching this farther (classic Hideaki Anno) except that annoying Island filler that makes Nadia more hate points. Time for another thrilling rewatch.
The ADV dub of NADIA is actually really underrated. Yes, it starts off on a shaky note, as the actors struggle with their accents, but they improve on it from day one and get more and more into character. Personally, I've always loved that this dub casts kids in the lead roles, and their performances are what really make the dub soar. The Grandis gang's VAs are really strong too.
This is not a good restoration. This is DNRd to hell, no film grain and it looks absolutely terrible. The previous Sentai BD is WAY better than this trash.
@@JemZard This is a Blu ray, the second one done. The original one from Sentai was sourced from a 2K scan but retained all the film grain in the source. This while being 4K removes and scrubs out all the detail retained in the filmgrain, also known as Digital Noise Reduction (DNR). This is an absolute garbage release that needs to be avoided at all costs.
Well, in a way, he is. He's the one who rescues Nadia at the start and who initiates the relationship. If it weren't for him, Nadia would probably have been captured by Gargoyle and would have forever been his slave. It's also Jean who shows Nadia consistent kindness and who gradually transforms her from an aloof, suspicious pessimist to a caring young woman. To be fair, Nadia does save him in return several times, but Jean is the true friend-easily the best friend everyone wishes they had. It's because of this that he IS the real main character. But Nadia herself still is central to the story.
@@Turnajon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fair enough. (Also epic profile picture, lol.) I just hope Apple's license expires one day, someone else picks it up, and releases it on Blu-ray by itself.
This is exactly why I have a clear conscience when I watch something *illegitimately* as long as I buy it on video when it releases.
However, this...this is the exception.
I'm not just going to wait for a Blu-ray release, but also for it to be released by itself in a proper plastic or steelbook case.
I was able to borrow Wolfwalkers from my public library. They had to send away for it, but they did get it for me. I have to say, I still like the charm of Song of the Sea better.
man, anime back then just had a completely different feeling, when they were warm they were warm and when they were dark, they were REALLY dark
Just got my copy in the mail, can't wait to watch it!
How is it? I know the EVA Blu Ray GKids released was 99% awesome but had an issue with subtitles missing from an alternate scene from End of Evangelion that was included as a special feature, to the point they had to send an email out and get people's receipt numbers so they could ship out a replacement disc. Any weird shenanigans like that with this release?
Gonna watch soon 👀❤️
It's a great show overall with an incredibly underrated dub, but beware of a hideous batch of episodes in the second half called the "island/Africa episodes." Those were never supposed to be in the show and are obviously detached from the rest of the thorough line. However, eps 1-22, 30, 31, and 35-39 (the preferred way to view it IMO) is the stuff of excellence.
@@Turnajon You can skip 30, too, though, thanks to the recap.
@@Turnajon thanks for the review haven't watched yet by the way cause my exams are near🥺🥺
This... this is good.
1:11 god he's lucky
Would a proper 4k HDR release be possible in the future?
DNR to the max
Apparently remastered by NHK in Japan too since their licensing website promotes the 4k version so not exactly GKids nor Shout Factory's fault.
@@NJ973201 Doesn't mean we can't blame them for using it.
NHK: here’s my DNR’d pet project.
GKIDS: it seems so dull and there’s not that much grain at all.
I'm so glad you picked this up! I missed out on the old DVDs. And I'm happy I can now collect this series without having to resort to torrents or bootlegs
As long as you're picking up OOP anime series, can you do Monster next? Like don't get me wrong, I'm gonna buy this, but... I'd kill for Monster.
So is this where they took the inspiration of Atlantis from
🔮Restoration Looks so clear! 🦁
the original team rocket lol
Holy cow that dub is grotesque! Animation looks great though and the concept looks fun. Looking forward of checking this one out in it's original language.
Afte spending a chunk on the Oop sentai release only to find out gkids got the license back.
Damn... GUESS I'M GETTING A THIRD COPY BABYYYY

This brief scene caught my attention, as the cel painting seems off - namely the colors being lighter and in some places overlap the lines (such as the white in Nadia's eyes).
This is something I do not expect with a studio like Gainax.
It then reminded me of info I read in a Wikipedia article on former Gainax co-founder and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto:
"According to Gainax co-founder Toshio Okada, Sadamoto's feelings towards Koreans were already a factor of animosity during the production of Nadia, during which he blamed outsourced Korean animators for oscillations of quality during the series' 'Island Arc' and would go on angry tirades disparaging their work, leaving the studio on his motorcycle. Anno believed this was part of miscommunication in the production process, and Okada attributed it to cultural differences."
Is this one of those episodes of said arc?
I heard there were comedic shorts only available on Laserdisk in Japan. I also heard no western release had those. Such a shame.
Disney Atlantis stole the idea from Nadia.
The Nadia game will appear on the Japanese version of the Sega Megadrive mini
Very cool anime. Re-discovered it a while ago. 👍
who's watching in 2024?
I need a Live action, now 😭
Qué espectacular este anime, de solo escuchar la canción del opening me da tremenda emoción 😌
will there be a youtube purchase as well?
I’ve seen this show before.
Parallels Laputa Castle in the Sky, I noticed.
ナディアかわいい
I first watched this anime back in 1994, it was Arabic dubbed on VHS.
is this a movie or series?
Series, one that preceeded Evangelion (as both had Hideaki Anno at the helm)
Joke's on y'all; I got my copy when Sentai had it.
If you want to see the inspiration for Pokemon's Team Rocket, buy this anime. Just know that you should skip a plethora of non-canon episodes in the second half.
Also has the best aerial battle I've ever seen.
I didn't even have to pay for my Copy. I was given it as a Birthday present
I thought the Time Bokan series from Tatsunoko had the inspiration for Team Rocket?
This bring back memories, by the way. Don't be deceived by the figures of those three idiots. A deceitful, a man with unbelievable strength and a smart one. Those three shouldn't taken up lightly 😂
holy shit I watched this in full not too long ago, would be nice to see a proper Blu ray for this!
Wish they'd make a directors cut of this series and cut out half the filler garbage they were forced to animate to lengthen the show.
They actually did this for a Japanese release. It's called 'The Nautilus Story'. (Unfortunately it does cut some good bits too.)
Cuánto arte
Damn. I need a 4k release in Germany.
Little Fun fact, last episode of the original run in japan aired on the day i was born
como se llama el soundtrack
Is this the original dub or a redub?
I wish Streamline Pictures did more than eight episodes because… well I wanted to hear Cheryl Chase’s voice for the character of Marie.
For those who don’t know who Cheryl Chase is you probably know her better as Angelica Pickles from the Rugrats.
She also did the voice of Beezle the demon prince in The Fantastic Adventures of Unico
Looks a billion times less depressing than Evangelion
Whats the music featured in the vid?
"Blue Water" is the opening of the show Nadia: The secret of the blue water.
Shame it's so blatantly upscaled and DNR'd, I was looking forward to this "New 4K Remaster".
I don't think GKIDS is at fault; NHK is probably the one who remastered it like that.
@@Turnajon Since it’s much older and bigger than GKIDS, NHK probably owns Nadia, because Hayao Miyazaki had sent his Nadia prototype to one of its former CEOs decades ago. But GKIDs currently has the distribution rights to the incredible ADV English dub of the show.
It’s a pretty sad reminder that digital destruction is not only pervasive, but also unbearable for some viewers.
haven't seen this yet, looks very similar to Laputa?
Haha, every time I see the title I laugh because in Spanish it means "the prostitute"but in a stronger and more offensive way😂😂😂😂
Preordered!
Loved this anime! (minus the island arc)
This is so Laputa : Castle in the Sky 😂
Hayao Miyazaki was screenwriter
A new dub? That would be the 3rd version.
Can you make a Rebuild version please? I prefer Rebuild (like Rebuild of Evangelion) over remastered version (ie. 4K Remastered version)
Be cool to have it in theaters. You guys had films coming to a local theater that sadly shutdown as a result of the pandemic.
It's not a film. 🤦
DNR!
Lets goooo!!
Wish they'd re-dubbed it
That ADV dub is so foul
@@user-ny5vp9be8v Wait, this ain't a BD release? I thought it was
@@JemZard This is a Blu ray, the second one done.
@@user-ny5vp9be8v I think this transfer is sourced from NHK in Japan, so maybe GKIDS isn't at fault.
I really think that it is so beautiful and so lovely animation movie video in the whole world 🌺
Nadia should also be released on Ultra 4K HD as well.
The German dub is awesome btw. 😅
I haven't seen the show, but i feel like it would have been my shit if they had it on Toonami lol.
Very cool but why does this trailer make it seem like Jean is the main character.
(Also epic profile picture, lol.) Still thought that the titular character (and at least deuteragonist) having, like… only one short line of spoken dialogue at the beginning was rather conspicuously disproportionate, you know?
(None of this actually matters or is a big deal, of course.)
Best anime ever, just forget about english dub lmao
الماسة الزرقاء
Dang so sentai did loose the title
