Mortal Kombat Chaotic is definitely a powerful contender. It's a Mortal Kombat fangame with a huge roaster of over 276 characters, the only issue is that a large chunk of that roaster is composed of extremely weird recolors and edits of the original roaster (Like a red Scorpio called "satan" and the allmighty pantherk), with balancing all over the place, it's a complete car crash of a game and it's amazing
Touhou Hisoutensoku is a p normal fighting game all things considered, with a couple of neat quirks that set it apart from other games that could land it in a list of "weirdest fighting games." Instead of normal airdashes, all characters have 8-way airdashes that can go in any direction of the stick. Instead of having normal attack buttons, two of them are dedicated to shooting projectiles. Instead of a conventional neutral, everyone is literally able to cancel the recovery of their projectile moves into movement, such as jumps or airdashes, as well as graze/phase through projectiles using dashes and highjumps effectively turning every character into a flavor of "rushdown zoner." Instead of a timer, Soku has a weather cycle that drastically changes the game state whenever a weather is in effect. Instead of normal strike/throw mixup in pressure, characters use unreactable 10f overheads/lows mixups and projectiles to deplete the opponent's guard bar. Instead of regular meter, players create decks for their character to decide what special moves, defensive systems, and supers they'll have access to in a match as they draw them as cards. There are more quirks to this game aside from the ones just stated, but point is that when I list them out like this, you can evidently see that Soku is quirky but not fundamentally different to other fighting games (I'm lying my fucking ass off with the last part, this game is weird af).
Also gotta give a slight mention the newer 2hu fighters Compared to soku they're definitely simplified but the simple question of "hey what if you could jump downwards in a fighting game" is pretty unique and quite fun

Hello there. You may be interested in looking at an old 1993 game released by Konami called Martial Champion. It's very weird (and on Fightcade), and I personally think it's a great hidden gem. Here's a rundown on most of the game's mechanics: It has 3 attack buttons, but instead of them being designated by speed or strength, they're "high", "mid" and "low", meaning everyone has dedicated anti-air and low buttons. Furthermore, everyone has exactly 2 special moves, and combos are impossible, since everyone is invincible during hitstun. Rather than having specific moves like sweeps knock down the opponent, only every 4th hit you land knocks down the opponent, and throwing resets the number of hits. Also, throws are instant, can grab airborne opponents, and there's no throw teching. So, to prevent abuse, the devs gave throws a ~5 second cooldown timer. (Additionally, Bobby, Racheal, and Goldor have air throws.) After being knocked down, during a 10 frame window in the middle of your own wake-up, you can throw while still in your invincible waking up state. The opponent cannot hurt you during this time frame, meaning to avoid this invincible throw they can't be next to you. If they go for a crossup, you'll have to switch which direction you're holding to throw them. It won't work if they're too high in the air, but if they're close to the ground you can still grab them. You will have to watch out for this on the opponent's wake up as well. Jumps are normally rather slow, but if you do a forward jump, and then input an attack button, your character will gain a sudden burst of horizontal speed, and fall either faster or slower depending on the character and button you chose, this speed can allow you to cross the entire screen in 1 jump, and mix up your landing in general, since you choose when to attack to gain speed. 5 out of the 10 characters have weapons. If they get knocked down, they can lose the weapon. Anyone can pick it up and use it for themselves by crouching on top of it, forcing you to knock them down to get it back. If you're already holding a weapon when taking one, it swaps the weapons.
You forgot to mention Neo Geo Super Dodge Ball, an update version from Kunio Dodgeball series. But you mentioned Tetris and as a puzzle fighter, I WILL MENTION MAGICAL DROP 3.
The most real fighting game I've ever played is any orchestral instrument (you're fighting the urge to bite your fingers off because you played F Sharp instead of F Natural)
Know what? When I’m done with my current project, I’m gonna try to make a weird fighting game. No motion inputs, only one attack button, instead way to many situational moves like aerials and also smash bros-ish stages. Also, omnidirectional blocking like smash and shit tons of movement. Basically smash but health bar and no special. Hmm now that I think about it, I might have to think through this idea again.
I’d be a troll and say something like “every platform fighter counts by that criteria :)” but I’m seeing a lot of people being up Lethal League and totally agreeing. It’s way more in line with a platform fighter mechanically, but even by plat fighter standards it’s pretty wacky lol.
Congratulations, this video legitimately made me into a competitive Fatal Knockout player. I have 1 tournament win under and it’s all because I found it in this vid.
If you ever make a part 2, you definitely need to check out lethal league blaze. They made a fighting game into a ball sport (or something like mixing pong with dodge ball)
How dare you not mention "Ultra Fight Dya! Kyanta 2". Sure the style gameplay-wise is fairly traditional, but that can't be said for... anything else about it lol. I AM KINOKO. YOU ARE KINOKO. WE ARE KINOKO.
You might also check out Yomi the card game. Similar idea to the fatal knockout game but the whole thing is based around mind games with basically non-existent maneuvering (outside of a couple character's special abilities).
Data east was like one of the biggest arcade game and pinball developers back in the day. They even made some console games. But its ok if you never heard of them its ok to be a zoom zoom.
Any pre-SFII game is likely to be "weird", be it Karate Champ, Pit-Fighter, Final Blow, Galactic Warriors, Shanghai Kid, Street Smart, Urban Champion, Tongue of the Fatman, King of the Monsters. Windjammers gets a mentioned often in the fighting community right now because of the new game, but there are a lot of similar weird fighting games that don't happen to be trendy at this moment. I don't even think Windjammers is a fighting game. It's a competitive game, but it's a sports game or just Pong. If Windjammers is a fighting game, every real-time 1 on 1 game is a fighting game. Also, you've never heard of "Data East" before? Hoo, boy. This is one of the really big companies of the arcade era. Data East was the first company important in the history of fighting games, even before Capcom. I get that it's hard to know who is important if you are young, but if you don't know then you may not be a Bad enough Dude to make this video (joke).
You are spittin'. Windjammers is a known game in the FGC because it is a competitive game and it's 1v1 and it's on fightcade. It's not a fighting game anymore than mario tennis. Toribash is not mentioned and that game is basically what the title of the video is talking about.
I made a game, mostly just for family and friends that is similar to Fatal Knockout, a fighting board game, and had a blast playing it... and losing to everyone I played against. Somehow, I'm the worst player of my own game...

I'll be honest with you. When you said obscure fighting games it got me thinking of my love for Big Bang Beat, Daemon Bride and Akatsuki Blitzkampf. Despite how emulating the first two was painfully annoying

Congratulations, this video legitimately made me into a competitive Fatal Knockout player. I have 1 tournament win under and it’s all because I found it in this vid.
Fantasy Strike developers released their game as a card battler first, also called Yomi
Pocket Fighter uses the same sprites for a lot of characters as Super Puzzle Fighter, which is neat I think.
that was the only sponsor i watched fully and was interested in
If you ever make a part 2, you definitely need to check out lethal league blaze.
WE ARE KINOKO.
shoutout my homie ivy for making your only move is hustle!!
I am so glad that he showed Divekick in this video.
The game isn't out yet but, I did play the early access was God of Rock. Basically fighting games meet Guitar Hero.
Your only move is hustle looks like a crazy yu gi oh game while playing like a Hyun dojo video at full speed
You might also check out Yomi the card game. Similar idea to the fatal knockout game but the whole thing is based around mind games with basically non-existent maneuvering (outside of a couple character's special abilities).
Super gem fighters also have 2 secret characters which is Akuma and Dan
Whenever I see YOMI now alls I can hear is "THIS IS THE END- THIS IS THE- THIS IS THE END OF YOUR LIFE" As moonwalker spawns a million hats
I stumbled onto your channel and I love watching your content, and seeing my mod Slimpurt mentioned here was quite the surprise to say the least 🧡
Bruh now I want to get fatal knockout. It looks so dope ngl.
Thought when you said "Do you like air hockey?" you were gonna show Lethal League Blaze
I made a game, mostly just for family and friends that is similar to Fatal Knockout, a fighting board game, and had a blast playing it... and losing to everyone I played against.
Somehow, I'm the worst player of my own game...
It's actually very normal for a creator of a game to be terrible at it. Knowing how you intended it to work gives you a disadvantage
@Random Cat Name that makes a lot of sense, harder for me to see how it actually works if all I see is how I wanted it to work
Honestly wished you would've talked about lethal league blaze but other than that banger video
The Sakura ending of super pocket fighter is pretty funny
Finally played strive today. Turns out I'm a potemkin main
Could have made a good case for lethal league blaze tbh
Sailor Moon Super S for the Super Family Computer it is a japanese only game (English Patches exists online) where some Magic Girls based of the Solar System throwing magic, punch and kick each other until someone is defeated
There are correct if i am wrong 11 Characters in the game
- Mercury
- Venus
- Moon
- Super Moon
- Chibi Moon
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
- Pluto
With each character having 3 skins each (Color Swaps) by selecting them with B you get the default skin,by pressing L on the character you get the first skin and by pressing R on the character you get the second skin
There is Multiplayer by 2 Players on the same screen or you can fight against the CPU and there is also a Pratice mode where the CPU just lets you attack her as much as you wanted without defending herself
Glad to see gecko talk about yomi 😀
How can you make this video and NOT bring up Toribash in some capacity?
That aside, really good watch! Excited to see your future content.
That air hockey game gave me Lethal League vides. That's a weird fighting game too. Also not even a shoutout to Ultra Fight Da ! Kyanta 2 smh my head
The cloaker sound at the beginning legit scared me
There's also Absolver. Interesting fighting game gameplay but I kind if consider it a rather odd fighting game.
Check out Heatwave. A very solid indie fighter with solid mechanics and buttery smooth combo system. Catch is, it looks like that old kung fu arcade game. But the graphics melt away as your brain melts into the intense, engaging fighting game.
i am disappointed at the lack of mention of lethal league
Wind jammers is a good game. It's have good control and overall polish. I will say that lethal league did something close to this concept
I think Puyo Puyo is more of a fighting game than tetris, and you might want to check out Terris Battle Gaiden
I wish I didn’t pour so many hours into Tobal No.1, remember when they had huge plans for that game?
I'll be honest with you. When you said obscure fighting games it got me thinking of my love for Big Bang Beat, Daemon Bride and Akatsuki Blitzkampf. Despite how emulating the first two was painfully annoying
Divekick and YOMI hustle are crazy
Back FKO! It's a fantastic game
Divekick is the best fighting game ever.
Surprised to not see a single platform fighter in this video.
Struggle, I meant hustle
Ultra fight da kyanta 2, might have pretty normal mechanics, but its definitely strange
Omg pocket figther is so nostalgic, i loved it alot as a child and played it alot on a free games site
Did you happen to ever play knockout city? That's one of the weirdest "Fighting games" in my book but one of my all time favorites
You forgot the classic, Photo Dojo for the DS
@gekkosquirrel I’m surprised you didn’t talk about Lethal League Blaze, but great video as always :)
The Frisbee one reminds me of Lethal League Blaze, also great vid!
You skipped the (likely) reason Your Only Move Is Hustle had to change its name. There is ANOTHER, even earlier tabletop fighting game named Yomi, it's a card game and there's also a Steam version. Made by David Sirlin btw.
"Your only move is hustle" looks like RPS on steroids.
an obscure fighting game that i really like is joy mech fight for the nes it looks at combos and goes that's cool but what if no and everything is broken it's pretty fun
I’m surprised Lethal League wasn’t brought up
I like your dancing, it’s like you’re mocking me.
So i’d put this in: lethal league. Baseball fight.
My answer to the title would be Kakutou Densetsu without a single doubt.
from my understanding YOMIH is basically Toribash as a 2d fighter
The Board Game sounds good. I destroyed my wrist and need something like a FG
