At this stage in the game, it's getting hard to afford the stuff you're wanting to freeze dry, nevermind the freeze drier, itself.

(CP) Nate: Can you please do a power comparison test?: How much power (Kwh) did it take to run the big machine, as well as the medium machine. Also perhaps do a comparison on food on how much energy for a batch of chicken between the two machines (kwh/kg of chicken) between the two machines. I wonder if the larger machine is more energy efficient over the smaller machine. You can use a kill-o-watt meter for testing power usage. Also how long per cycle does each machine take?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey community. This educational video is amazing. I upgraded my small FD to the Medium a few weeks ago for the same price of the small. Tractor Supply exchanged it for me since I only had the small for less than 2 months. I invested 2100.00 USD. I have Tomato Paste and Meat prefreezing right now. I will process in the FD today. I grew the tomato, onion, carrot, garlic, herbs myself. So the cost of the Paste was maybe 2 dollars. I bought a killer deal (5.19 per pound) tri tip roast as costco, sliced it and am pre freezing it now. I will FD that raw too. After I finish my apples and Grapes and winter squash that I am growing, After I FD my produce, I will start freeze drying everything that I pressure canned last year. Nate told us that food was going up in price so I learned to Pressure Can meat last year. NOW I will FD it and be secure with long term meat stored that I invested for $3.60 per pound last year. I can't believe how expensive meat is. $11.50 for the same thing this year.

@CanadianPrepper I’m getting one debating on the smaller one. This got me thinking about the distractions. Could it be that we’re being distracted with ukr and the real concern should be Taiwan for the US? There are very few months a yr a Chinese invasion amphibious or airborne strike works on Taiwan because of the winds and other factors and are not as simple as many may think. It would also be an untested military. Taiwan makes 90% of the chips we use everyday from phones, cameras, cars, aircraft so USA can’t let that happen. That would lead me to believe it would be a lot more intense in every sense. What’s your take on that? Thanks for all the info/tips you bring us! ❤

    • @jilbertb

The previous model medium-size was the largest one could go using a standard household plug. The oil-free pump is totally worth it (at least for the previous model). Had a lot of trouble with blueberries and garlic cloves (even though I cut the garlic up). I cut everything up really small--maximize surface area. Somehow, the garlic "bubbled". Some of the fruits became super sticky, and I didn't think it would be safe to vacuum seal and save it like that. Any thoughts? I only trusted the process if the product "powderized"--if I could smush it between my fingers & have it turn to dust. Greenbeans, carrots, peas turned out super easily.

I honestly thought it would be more expensive. The only thing stopping me from buying one is the necessity of a dedicated circuit; my house is old and the wiring just isn't sufficient. Cool machine though.

Broke on an near nothing Budget so can't afford four grand though believe this would be well worth it for those who can. I grew up w a native American grandmother who raised 8 children and some of us grandchildren. I would help her dry our meat the old way outdoors. Pork was fully cooked then stored in its own rendered fat to extend the life of the product and beef could not be more then half inch in thickness and slathered in a dry chili w salt paste to eliminate moisture prior to hanging out in direct sun during the summer on a clothes line for 3 days in the summer heat covered w just a old thin sheet and we flipped it every 24 hours 3 days before it would be stuffed into old flour sacks. chicken was the only meat we had fresh due it it being raised in the yard but even that was not an everyday option. We mostly got our protein from beans and purslane and cactus pads w a year round small garden of very basic chili, onions and sometimes peanuts. our fruit was only citrus, fig or dates because that was about all that grew fairly well without much effort in Arizona weather. We grew corn but still purchased flour bean and rice.

We have a medium Harvest Right freeze drier and absolutely LOVE IT! That think is a monster. If people aren't aware, there is an upgrade for the medium to a 5 tray rack from 4 trays. It's not that expensive compared to the additional dry space.
