They left out the last part of this scene...which was James telling his friend to make sure his mother was taken care of and had whatever she needed. That, was the important part of this scene. That he didn't show her any love in person because she abandoned him...yet, he STILL looked out for her.

Weather you want to admit it or not, many poor blacks was not "House on Beacon Street" They tore each other down; But the black family is and has been torn apart through slavery. Even a the lowest slave wants to be king in his castle. To be a black woman back then and now is not easy. Back then, Black men learned discipline by being beat so they beat. Its not so easy to dismiss her, if James was better than her he would have taken care of her-not stoop to her level. Always honor your mother and father even if they are bad, it would been a great lesson for his children. They cycle of distruction and hate must top in the black family.

This scene was steeped in layers of emotion. Her confession of ignorance, abuse, and fear are real plagues that poison our own families. It is sad that she could not give him what he needed, and that she never got what she needed to pass it on to him. She did love him, she was proud of him. Unfortunately, the unhealed wound of abandonment is hard to repair. It's not the fate of every family, but sometimes pain takes a lifetime or two to detox the poison. Maybe James Brown & his Mother will get to enjoy a New Life together in a different way. In a life where they do not have to survive harsh environments soaked in poverty and abuse.

RIP Chadwick. Such a powerful scene. You could really feel James restrained anguish at his mother. But it takes the last few words from her that aren’t in anyway laced with outrage or despair. Those are the words that make him break down the most. I think it’s the first actual time to see the character breakdown and literally collapse under the strain of years of pain and sadness and anger. He wanted answers, and yet weighed his words for years what he would say to his mother. Her reasons were bullshit, but you could see that James partially for gave her because that much pain was not worth carrying. Yet she still made it tainted by obviously being there for money. Some things are never completely resolved or straightened out. Some things are just left broken. It is truly tragic when he went through and how it molded him into the man that he became. A truly powerful performance overall.

I sympathize with her and James honestly and to dovetail with your point I understand that historically women in the US have been treated more like pack animals than an equal partner, and at the time James was a child it was even worse than nowadays which is still pretty fucked up( abortion laws and wage disparities), because the laws were literally written to enforce that situation. Women couldn’t own property, divorce, or control their own finances or bodies when it came to birth or abortions. It was even worse for black women, because they had two strikes against them from the start; the color of their skin and being a member of a gender that had no rights whatsoever.
I’m not even saying she should’ve done that; I’m simply saying I understand why she made the decision she made at the time; it was obviously very painful for her. Fast forward 70 years to our day and multiple states have passed legislation to strip women of their autonomy when it comes to their bodies. The same is not true for men.

Two actors played some of the most stone cold characters in any movie. One delivering crocodile tears, and the other one delivering meaningless goods. Undeniable love, and a lot of distinction.
Amazing that this scene came at the end of the movie after Bobby told him off for being a prick and saying he's alone and always has been. He wants to have a mother, friends, people he can rely on etc. which is why his lips parsed and he breaks down onto the chair when she tells him he's handsome in the same way a mother would to a son she's proud of. His mom was talking to him like he always wanted but he just couldn't accept what his parents did to him. This is explains why he's the way he is and does it so beautifully
