I worked at the Vermont Air National Guard from 1971 to 1978. The last 3 years I went into crash and rescue for the Burlington Airport where the guard base was to support commercial and air guard air craft. There was an air show there for the weekend. When all the different planes would arrive they would do something fancy like low approaches and heading straight up or fly by upside down. My favorite plane was the F-100 because it just looked menacing. And at the end of the weekend, when they were heading back to their base they again would do some fly by to say see you later. My shift captain and I drove out to the flight line to watch everyone leave. We were right on the edge where the grass area begins. And then came the F-100. Now these fly by flights were over the main runway. The F-100 took off and peeled off to the right or south of the airport hauling ass. We watched him circle round in the distance making his way back to the airport. He started coming in from the west heading east and it suddenly occurred to us that "hey, he's coming right at us!" about maybe 40 feet above the ground. We were in a International pickup with some halon and dry chem firefighting apparatus mounted in the back. Of course we had the windows rolled down. When he went over us the truck kinda lifted up from left to right along with every piece of debris from the flightline to the grass field in front of us. It was a hurricane of stuff pulverizing us that last about 15 seconds for everything to settle never mind how loud it was. It was a FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE. The tower got a chuckle I'm sure as did the pilot. Great memory and a great video you've posted. Thanks!! I did manage to go up in a T-33 twice, missed out on a ride in the F-102 and B-57 Canberra that were there during my tenure. The F-4's came in after I left.
@@Bullet4MyEnemy haha I get that! I know it’s kindof “boring” for some but i actually enjoy watching these types of videos so figured maybe others also would
@@The_Plastic_Ape ah yes, another feature of these cool cameras. You can “horizon lock” them. Sometimes makes for a good perspective and sometimes it’s just strange.
Nice! The rear-facing perspective was novel too. Although... did I mention that I get airsick when I fly facing to the rear? Excuse me while I get this bag out.... 😉
Is that an old Flight System Inc. logo on the FOD cover? I know they had a lot of F-100s that they were turning into target drones out at Majove Airport years ago.
@@ces188charles6 Collings foundation had one they were trying very hard to get airworthy but they weren’t able to get the support required to make it happen.
@ces188charles6 the story i was told was they had congress sign a bill so they could get one. They where going to get one from Lackland that they used for security training. The air force didn't want them to get one air worthy so they scraped them before they could get ahold of one. I talked to a reserve guy from hill that crewed those back from the 80s. And he said those jets where in terrible shape. He said they had 10 hr inspections on the wings because they where so badly cracked. So I can understand why big blue didn't want one airworthy.
@@Racer1505 Close, that's how CF got the F-4 was with Congressional approval. CF later wanted to get a flyable Thud, and the USAF and USAF Museum caught wind of that and saw to it that all F-105's that could potentially be returned to flight had wing spars cut and the engines spiked to ensure that no one could get a flyable Thud.
@DieselThunderAviation I've heard variations of the story over the years. But i knew they broke those jets on purpose and broke them so it would be cost prohibitive to fix
Im just fascinated by watching the leading edge slats moving in and out, just on air pressure.
I agree! Always fun to watch!
Great video. Thank you for sharing. Would be an amazing experience.

First! Nice video!! Can even see Grinnelli's microphones!
Yea not bad! At least another perspective of a historical aircraft flying in a cool environment!
@@JetJerod
Did the pilot fly from the back for the sake of Grinnelli's recording gear?
There was nobody in the back seat, pilot in front seat but yes, all of the equipment was in the back seat during the weekend!
@@JetJerod
I have no idea why I assumed I was looking at the front seat, derp 😅

@@owenmurray1405 not that we know of, we’d love to get it there someday!
What a magnificent machine!! At 5:26, it took me a few goes to work out what wasa going on, before I worked out the camera is probably on a gimbal :-)

Wow, didn't know they made airplanes that flew with no pilot!

Yes. This was a Flight Systems aircraft, it was used to tow aerial gunnery targets.
Is there anyone trying to get an f105 airworthy that you know of?
They were a workhorse of Vietnam air war.......

Well that just stinks. It would be awesome to see the f-4, the hun, a4 and a thud in the air together.
