This film is proof that they should always cast age appropriate actors for teenagers. That the kids look so young is what makes it have such an impact.
A lot of them did look like teens. Matt Dylan for one. Look how tiny he was. That blonde kid looked like a teen. Lots of them did to me. They did a lot better than Dazed and Confused. None of them but a couple looked like teens.
Actual kids, wearing their own clothes, and with no Hollywood hair and makeup. The constraints of low-budget made all the difference in making this film feel so REAL.
Probably the movie that epitomizes the time like no other. From the music to the combs in the back pockets, this WAS us. Hands down one of my favorites.
Saw this for the first time in 1987. Turned me into a Cheap Trick fan big time. I had just turned 18 and I related to the kids in this movie because that's EXACTLY how my friends and I were in the early 80s. :)
freakin Matt Dillon's first movie ever...Was found by the Producers of this movie while playing hookie from school. His life would have turned out way different if he went to school that day...Kind of ironic, isn't it?
Yeah I know that story on Matt Dillion because he went to the same Middle School as I Did. Lots of students and teachers for many years all talked about it. I don’t blame him he cut class because that middle school place sure was boring alright😂
@@Theaterg15 I loved this movie. Not only a great time-capsule of teen life in late 70s America, SoCal in particular, but timeless. The soundtrack totally nailed it. This is what the teens I knew were listening to in 78-79: Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Ramones, etc. I was born in the 70s, so I was still a little kid when this film came out, but the trouble making teens reminded me of trouble makers on my own block who were always spreading mayhem. Most of them turned out a-okay, only one had a long history of crime and substance abuse. It's a solid movie about coming of age in atomic age America. I prefer it to American Graffiti.
I watched this movie in 1979 just before I moved to Germany as a 10 yr old. Was only in the theater about two weeks before they pulled it. It grew to cult status and yes Matt Dillon helped due to his later celebrity. They just never gave Mike Kramer and Tom Fergus their just due. Even the trailer has almost nothing from those two. Still one of the best films made during my childhood.
Like most, i only learned of Over The Edge from montage of heck, but I'm glad i did . I've watched it a shitload. Its one of my favourite American films ever.
I was 9 when this came out and watched it on what we called cable tv. I was a teen of the early 80s and it was still the same. I had a best friend like Richie and sadly he died young. Love this movie and miss this time.
This was the favorite movie of many an American rage filled teen. I discovered it in the video store in 1989 aged 12 or 13 and wore the VHS out. Matt Dillon was sublime in his first (I think) role.
I grew up in Foster City, CA. Born in 1974 so I’m just a few years behind these guys. Everything was/is terrifyingly idyllic there. No homeless, no street drugs (plenty behind closed doors though!). No poor. But damn I couldn’t get out of there fast enough!

I was born in San Francisco but lived in Foster City in the 70's and early 80's. I've lived other places around the Bay and now Nevada but I've always considered Foster City my hometown. It's a badge of honor this movie is somewhat based on Foster City and how life was for us kids there back in the 70's. I just remember riding my bike all over the town, going to Straw Hat Pizza on Beach Park or getting a 5 cent scoop of ice cream at Thrifty's at Marlin Shopping Center. I played AYSO soccer for 7 years and even won our division once. Fun times, even though the FC police were useless pieces of crap much of the time, always hassling us kids. Great memories though😂
That’s funny. Both Over The Edge and Dazed & Confused are my top 2 favorite “American Youth in the 70’s” films. Both are extremely accurate and really nail those times perfectly. I’m 53 years old, and those were the years I grew up in.
My memory brought me here...I was 9 or 10 years old, and remember watching this on regular TV one evening. I remember there being one kid that couldn't talk, I think he rode a skate board

It was the same for me. It took me a while to place this movie. I couldn't remember the name but had vague memories of the school etc.. It was when I was watching clips of My Bodyguard that I saw Matt Dillon and finally traced him back to this movie.
Although mostly remember nowadays as Matt Dillon debut, 'Over The Edge' is a surprisingly good movie. It is a blend of teenager angst, parental alienation, hopeless teachers and it is still fun. One can say it is "Dazed and Confused" with a touch of hangover and a little bit of tragedy.
I guess for the late seventies, it's understandable why a movie like this was considered very powerful and very disturbing. It was probably just like the equivalency to the movie Kids from 1995. Kids disturbed the fuck out of me, but Over The Edge never left me feeling traumatized by any means. That proves that by today's standards, Over The Edge is looked at as very mild since life back in the late seventies was not as overrated and shockingly provocative as the way life is now. Kids back in those days were still capable of being under control by authority figures, but anymore they are truly out of control and disrespectful. I love Over The Edge and it is to this day one of my very favourite movies! ~Dutch
Such a classic, under-rated film....one of my favorites....There’s something that seemed kind of comical about teenage bad behavior in the 70’s vs. some of the evil shit that goes on today..
I just remembered seeing this movie as a kid my aunt was watching it in the living room....and i sat and watched it all I could remember is kids burning books while riding there bikes around it

@DuchessDiz: A lot of it was filmed in the area near I-225 & Parker Rd. That's about 13 miles from Columbine. Bridge shooting scene at the beginning is Yale Ave over 225. The school (John Evans Middle) was in Greeley though, which is much farther away.

My Bodyguard was like that also.
The reason many film companies use actors over 18 portraying kids is to avoid child labor laws.
