When The Message dropped, the world was 2 years removed from Sugar Hill Gang being the face of hip hop. I hate these greatest of all time debates because they're all pointless, it's all conjecture and it's all moot. It's impossible to compare different eras of anything whether it's hip hop or ball. When The Message dropped, the world was 2 years removed from Sugar Hill Gang being the face of hip hop. I'll let that sink in for a second......OK, now on top of that, this was also before the crack epidemic hit its worst levels in NYC. My point being, the fact that Mel wants to hate on JayZ for literally doing what Mel taught him to do is absolutely ridiculous. The idea that it's only great if it changes the landscape is also ridiculous.
