  • If your drive axles are over weight, your not over gross and the tandems are already slid all the way. The only Remedy is to slid the 5th wheel. This Video shows how.

    First time I slid my fifth wheel I didn't know about taking the weight off of it. Lets just say I'll never forget to the next time. Everything stored on my top bunk ended up on the floor up front when it finally slid.

    Great information....your right to check tire weight rating....by me your allowed 18,000 lbs. on the front axle....but the axle has to be rated at that....and have the proper rims/tires.....I've seen most road trucks are 12,000 or 13,500 lbs rated front axles unless you spec different

    I love your enthusiasm, good information. Page A15 of the Rand McNally is the "Federal Weight and Size Limits" and it warns you to "...to check the laws for those states and provinces in which you plan to drive." Laws for each state/provinces can be found on A16 "State/Provincial Weight and Size Limits." Many states have more restrictive weight limits for "steer axles" compared to a "single axel." It is true many states allow the steers to exceed 12K lbs, some states do not, one must check as part of trip planning. Keep up the good work.

    After you drop your landing gear, you should also drop your tractor airbags. Most manufactures recommend you take all weight off the 5th wheel before sliding. It also makes your life easier because the truck will lurch less.

      I’m a rookie at sliding 5th wheel. Think this was 3rd time ever. So, you know I had to make a video. I knew I wasn’t smooth and that’s why I requested comments Figured some veterans would drop some knowledge

    One more question Jim and anyone can chime in. If there where only 3 or 4 things you could tell someone who wanted to be a truck driver needed to know I'm driving the truck or living the life what would they be?

      Figure out what you like would be my advise. The first year may be a little crazy while learning and figuring out what you like based on type of loads you work with, areas you drive and how often you go home. There are a lot of options. If anyone bought it, a truck brought it. Make some friends with other truckers and learn from others mistakes so you don’t have to make so many. My zello channel is a good place for that but there are a bunch of others.

    I'm thinking of a career change and I've never driven a truck before. There is a truck driving school nearby and a company will sponser is this a good way to go?

    • @JimDavis_truckin_journey
      @JimDavis_truckin_journey  6 лет назад

      A lot of people do it that way. Advantage is you don’t pay upfront to get a CDL , but you are committed to the company that paid it and they usually aren’t the highest paying companies. Most truck driving schools have financing of some kind available and you can pay it back once you get working and many companies will offer tuition reimbursement for people that pick them as their first company to drive for. Way that works they pay you a little extra each month to go towards loan payment. Or there may be a government program that will pay it. Good luck. Where do you live ?

      if you are prior service i.e military you can use your g.i bill to pay for driving school and it's no cost to you or you can go to a driving school pay up front me I went a different route and trained at tmc but other people have different plans and stuff do your research before making a decision on a company I have several videos talking about that on my channel be safe bud and make the right decision based off your needs from a company not theirs

    wow just another super trucker right here that thinks he knows what he's talking about for you new guys out there that are getting in the trucking industry on most older trucks your front axle is rated for 12k you do not go off tire rating it's all about you axle rating an experience heavy haul truck driver tried to tell you this trucker jim but you deleted his comment so with that being said 12k front axle weight 34k max weight on drives on my trailer 40k (flatbed) either way I still have to do it d.o.t legal 80k gross but going off tire rating is not the correct way to do this

    Now that you have adjusted the overall length of your vehicle are you sure you're in compliance with the Bridge Law? With the tandems all the way up I'm sure you are but it would have been worthwhile to cover that as well.

    • @fishinhardwater0
      @fishinhardwater0 6 лет назад

      Raul Rider the kingpin to center of rear tandem is still in the same place no matter where you put the fifth wheel

    • @raulrider5956
      @raulrider5956 6 лет назад

      Can't argue with that. However, the Bridge Law takes the measurement from the center of the front hub to the center most part of the tandems.
