  • A year ago we walked away from everything and headed out to see the world. We spent our 1st year on beautiful Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean. This video is an overview of our adventures during over the last year and we can say that, even after a year, Isla Mujeres is paradise! We hope you enjoy watching it but we definitely loved living it!

    May I ask why you chose Isla as your main stay? I see you really got around! If you were to do it again, would you base there again? Where would you choose if you were going to live and maybe buy something? To put it simply I had it here in the US. I want to retire south. I love the ocean and was stationed in Hawaii 5 years. I miss it so... I hope to do something like you two in about 3 years. I do not plan on working much and am on my own.

    • @KattieMetChris
      @KattieMetChris  2 года назад

      Wow! That's a big question, we'll do our best to answer 🤙 We chose Isla because Kattie had never lived out of the US and it was a small island but close enough to Cancun that if she got "homesick" we could get an inexpensive cheap flight back to the US whenever she wanted. We spent some time on Isla before choosing it and the mix of warm water, nice convenient beach and inexpensive great food were the other main factors in our decision. We loved it and still love it. We definitely wouldn't change a thing and Isla is still a place that feels like home whenever we visit. That being said, after a year there, Kattie never got homesick so we started wandering the globe. We are currently in Thailand and, for longterm/retirement this is a better fit for us that the Caribbean and much more affordable on a fixed income (as a side note, if you are "fed up" with the states and are looking south, don't overlook the fact that millions of Americans have headed south, some permanently & some as snow birds, and a lot of them seem to have brought their politics and problems with them rather than leaving them behind with their "old life"...we are all about enjoying a peaceful existence and experiencing the best that other cultures have to offer..and also warm water and lovely beaches ...never forget those 🤣🌞). Hope this helps? Always here if our experience can help. Our lives are now more enjoyable than we ever thought possible and seriously just keep getting better. The longer we live this way, the more we wonder why we ever spent so long in our previous stressful lives. All best!! Please stay in touch

I am going alone, my girlfriend died, not looking for love again. Any tips for a guy in his 40s on his own with an entire month on his hands on and island? Any MUST do, see things you'd suggest? Thanks🙂

      @KattieMetChris  4 года назад +1

      Wow..first off, very sorry to hear about your loss. Good on you for heading out for island time! FOr us, a month is the perfect amount of time on Isla Mujeres. We just did a video of our top places to eat a couple months ago which is on our channel. If you click the "videos" tab on our channel that video along with some other videos we did in the area are couple lines down from the top. Merida and Bacalar are also amazing! As far as just Isla Mujeres, we like to stay in Centro so we can walk to the beach whenever we want and save the expense (and sometimes headache) of having a golf cart or scooter rental, though it is fun to rent one every once in a while to go cruise around the island. We'd recommend taking your own mask and snorkel (we don't travel with fins as we travel really light) so then you can just hop in and snorkel by the MIA Reef resort anytime you want, also lots of boats going to better snorkeling spots for day trips. For us, Playa Norte with it's epically swimmable blue water and white sand is the absolute best of Isla so we'd spend most of our time there. Check out our other videos and hit us up with any questions we can answer. Have an awesome day!

      I like how you mentioned the sea glass art - my wife and daughters were AMAZED at the amount of sea glass they picked up on the rocky shore at the Malecon!! @@KattieMetChris not sure what that is I've been to Mexico over 20 times but not isla mujeres. I guess lime?
      One question as someone who spent a year I'm sure you'd know.
      I originally was going to book an Airbnb mid island to save money get a nicer place. Rent a golf cart for the week.
      Started reading many online stories of policia going overboard to police drinking /driving carts.
      I'm not meaning while driving but the ability to stop at a beach restaurant & have a couple drinks or at night led to police holding people up for money.
      My wife then insisted we stay at Playa Norte, we booked a cheap hotel (isla caracol) as we can walk everywhere and take cabs.
      Did u run into issues like I've read or is that people overreacting?

    • @KattieMetChris
      @KattieMetChris  5 лет назад

      @@sharkhark We love staying near Playa Norte and always recommend that to friends. It's really nice to be able to walk everywhere and you can rent a cart for a day if you want to go south for a day. As far as the golf cart/drunk driving situation...a lot of folks can get pretty out of control and needless injuries and deaths occur. We recommend not getting behind the wheel (or handle bars) of anything after drinking at all. Designated driver/rider works really well to avoid the types of situations you may be referencing. We've never had any issues but we abide by local laws (something that also tends to be lacking in many visitors). Hope this helps! Feel free to PM us for any tips or info. You'll have a great time on this amazing island!

Best bet (as for any place on isla) is to go in person (not phone or email) and talk with them. Check out some of our newer Vlogs and let us know what you think. Two of our personal favorites for fresh fish are right along the beach just up from the ferry pier. One is Velazquez (the last place before Playa Centro) and their specialty is Mojo de Ajo (grilled in garlic sauce). The other is Picus just a short way up from the ferry and they do a great Tikin Xic and/or grilled fish also their ceviche is excellent. Make sure to ask for fresh fish caught that day, both of these places have always been up front with us if they were out of fresh caught. Hope you enjoy the island as much as we have!!
