    Thanks everyone, I love making these videos so I'll keep on tearing down stuff until I run out of new items (and then I'll probably buy some more to take apart).

    Coming from 2022, I was trying to find a good English speaking teardown of an electric lighter. I've recently had a second lighter fail on me, and I had a limited knowledge of electronic parts for the possibility of repairing them. Thanks for the video!

    Very nice teardown. One thing that confuses me - a high wattage resistor on the base (gate!) of the FET - that makes no sense ... - Are you sure it's not a sense/limiting resistor on the drain of the FET?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  7 лет назад

      zaprodk It's likely a current limiting resistor on the drain as you suggest. I doubt there is any feedback or sensing happening based on how cheap this was. Probably just runs free oscillating and uses the resistor to limit current through the primary winding.

    I’m trying to fix one that’s pretty much identical the problem is that the button fell out so slid of the cover but can’t find what the button needs to be in contact with to turn it on ? I’m baffled with it but don’t like to throw it away .

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  Год назад

      iirc there's a tiny little metal dome switch mounted on the side that's the electrical switch. I'd stick the button into its hole in the case facing down (so it doesn't keep falling out) while sliding the innards into the case. The outer and inner button parts should align correctly once fully inserted.

    Mine broke beyond repair, trying to figure out how to just use the transformer with the battery.

    My arc lighter just broke and I found this video trying to find a fix. I had just used it to light some hemp wick, and noticed the arc was weaker and the light was on its last dot (1 out of 3 lights on). I plugged it into the micro usb cable and left it for 40 min or so, unplugged it and walked away. Hours later, I go to use it and its "dead", no lights, no arc. So I plug it in again, and one light of the three turns on to indicate that its charging. Normally from completely dead, I can charge it for 15 seconds to get it to light a wick again in a pinch. So I unplugged it. But now, the charging light stays on. Normally lights are only on during charging or if the top is flipped open. Now they are staying on all the time, and it wont produce an arc at all. Closing and opening lid doesnt change lights at all, and continuing to charge it just makes it very hot.
    Guessing the battery is broken?

    Mine has two arcs that form an "X" and after working for months, now only one arc lights up. The electrodes are clean. Any idea what else the problem could be?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  2 года назад +1

      If the electrodes are clean then I'd guess the wire inside disconnected for the second pair of contacts (no idea how this would happen but it's possible).

    Hey I just got one and it didn’t even last a day, i tried cleaning it and it didn’t do anything but when I accident moved one of the parts it worked for a second until I put it back inside and screwed it on, I think I’m just uneducated and I don’t know what to move or touch but I don’t want to risk anymore cuz I already got shocked twice and it was pretty scary lol

    • @akmargiela10
      @akmargiela10 3 года назад

      So if anyone can educate me on why i hear it and feel it burning but there’s no plasma or light getting started it would be nice (it has to be that one of the parts inside isn’t correctly placed or something like that) from what it looks like

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  3 года назад

      Sounds like maybe two issues, first some solder joint broke and second putting the metal case back on is causing a short for the high voltage. You'll have to open it and carefully inspect all wires for the break and after you fix that see if there are any exposed metal connections that could be touching the metal case when it's assembled.

    Man, you could at least turn around once that lighter so we could see what battery it uses!

    • @sjm4306

      The silver square at the bottom front is the lipo battery (with text printed on it specifying the size, nominal voltage and capacity). The back actually has nothing iirc, all components are visible from the front which is why I didn't really bother showing the back.

    Hi. How's it been? Thanks for this Arc Lighter- Iron Man's true power supply:D
    Could you help diagnose my Famicom power adapter. I've replaced the capacitor (16v 2200nF), the two diodes check out fine having a reading of 0.5 and the reading is only one way but when I plug it to a step down transformer 100v, the reading at the other end of the plug, the barrel (the one that goes into the Famicom unit) is less than 0.001v, not even 1v.
    The adapter outputs 10v DC, the input is 100v AC (japan). I wish I could play the Dr. Mario already included when I received this unit, haven't played the Famicom for decades now:-)
    By the way I hope you get to collaborate with ElectroBoom.
    Happy Easter!

    • @sjm4306

      Sounds like the transformer is blown then. My guess if someone tried to directly drive it at a higher voltage, something like 220Vac, and blew the primary. Honestly it would probably be easier and cheaper to just get a secondhand/replacement ac adapter locally with the correct voltage and current ratings.
      Lol, I would love to collab with ElectroBoom but I'm a much much smaller channel so I don't see that happening any time soon.

    • @SevenDeMagnus
      @SevenDeMagnus 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks. True. I hope I find a cheap replacement, else I'll need to have to rewound.
      ElectroBoom seems willing to collab. You could email him, there's only one way to find out:-)

      ElectroBoom, seems to be like my friend (ECE), only my friend, designs the electronics to test the subcomponents for the parts of the products. ElectroBoom seems to design the products themselves:

    • @SevenDeMagnus

      By the way, how can I test if the Famicom's Power adapter, if the wire and barrel jack itself is the culprit?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  5 лет назад +1

      Safest, easiest way is to take apart both the adapter and famicom so the solder points can all be probed, plug the adapter into the famicom, set your multimeter to beep/continuity, use one probe to touch the negative side of the cap on the adapter and the other probe to touch any ground point on the famicom (it should beep, showing there is a good connection). Then do the same for the positive side of the cap on the adapter and the center pin board contact of the female power socket on the famicom board. If both these beep then it isn't the wire or jack that's the problem.

    please help me my lighter have a noise when i turn it on the noise come from plasma lights

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  2 года назад

      That's completely normal, the plasma is super heated gas in the atmosphere that's been ionized by the high voltage and the rapid expansion of air at high frequency causes the high pitch squeal.

      What works works. In a pinch I've fixed (mostly temporarily) so many things with some form of tape, cardboard or super glue. They are like the periodic elements of modding.

      Well yeah I’m pretty proficient in needing something, turning 180• and finding for the fix. But if I did a video on that and said to everyone via the title that I” moded “ it.
      Well I feel it would be disingenuous at least.
      Creative button fix
      That would be more than fair
      But the words
      Hi voltage + mod + RUclips video
      Your expectations( unless you mindlessly watch ANYTHING ON RUclips ALL DAY) are less than met plus even though folks don’t hold you to it
      Be the type of person that says am I posting something helpful or at least constructively entertaining or am I posting just to put shit out?
      Videos titled like this and channels like I assume yours is , as you know people that subscribe are expecting more than what you gave us here
      Had you not responded I’d a seen down the road you channel pop up and would NOT HAVE HAD that” oh I remember this guy ooooo he’s got a new video” moment
      But I’ll check back with you here soon
      And cause you responded
      I’ll retake my 👎 I gave you

      I try to be genuine in the content I post and how I interact with viewers. Not every video I post is on point and a success, believe me I have some pretty cringy, fail, waste of time videos. But I chalk that up to a learning experience and being human. And in then end if you feel let down or like I wasted your time, well that's your right and your opinion isn't any less valid for it. I do appreciate though that instead of just giving a thumbs down and leaving a negative comment that you actually explained why you feel the way you did about this video. That's so much more constructive than the usual "you suck" comment I receive. I welcome honest comments any day whether positive or negative.
      It's been awhile since I posted this video so I could be wrong, but I don't remember saying this was a mod in the title or description (though honestly I probably did in the video itself). I just wanted to tear it apart to see what was inside and it happened to need a little mod to make it easier to use. It happens from time to time especially for dirt cheap stuff like this (I pretty much open every electronic thing I buy to check wiring, soldering, and any improvements I could make).
      In the three years since I posted this video I hope I have grown. I find myself doing less teardowns and more custom projects and full on repairs. It definitely helps that I am no longer a broke college student and I even have a sponsor now so this channel is self sustaining and no longer just a money black hole like it used to be. I do hope you give my other videos a chance and let me know your honest opinion.
