@@volkswizard Thank you. (I wasn't expecting a reply!) If you ever get a chance, I think your style would lend itself well to such a comparison on video.
My pleasure Patrick. It’s tricky because the Honda is so different to Clubsport S. The way VW differentiate performance models is different to Honda. They are more subtle and classy and while you can’t choose different colour interiors (like with the Honda) the default trim is designed to offend nobody and with the standard bucket seats which complement the rest of the interior it’s special without being garish. No back seats is always going to make a Golf (in fact any hatch) special. VW could have used non standard cars like Honda did for the ring record but they took the seats out and were brave enough to keep that for the production CSS. GTI ride is pretty plush in comfort mode which means it’s easy to forget you are something special, I suspect Civic is firmer so feels more special but less comfortable. I think most people will see the Civic as a modified car and the Golf as a normal GTI. For me the fact the Golf can blend in and yet be so talented & useable makes it more special. But Civic is still special, just with we could have a wingless car with no red inside and 2 exhaust tips or even black tips, silver wheels would be nice too👍
Biggest problem here is that the majority of the audience are vw fans. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Get it, its a vw channel primarily, Good on yah . Just seems a shame, though, that we dont seem to have the petrol head that can appreciate other car makers anymore and what they do. Instead we get disapproval. Remember life would be boring if everybody and everything was the same. Lets just for once appreciate every car makers take on a sporty hatch i say.

Thanks Andrew. Looks very good in grey with the contrasting red (the only colour available) interior. Think you'll struggle to buy new as UK allocation is quite low. Other than Yaris, probably the only manual hot hatch left now that i30n discontinued. The last of a dying breed...... 👍
Thanks Colin. What I noticed while editing was that the back seats are black and the fronts are red! There are so many mistakes with this car like that, forcing people to have red carpets (and red front seats is another) and that wing and 3 exhausts is just too much. How much of the above really is necessary? The chassis and gearshift which everyone raves about don't need the bolt on bits and certainly not required on the road. Get rid of all that rubbish and I might forgive the terrible switchgear.
@@volkswizardwhat’s wrong with the switch gear? The touch sensitive screen on a mark 8 Golf is the most useless thing I have ever tried on any car 🤷♀️
@@bestcrazyboy8487I totally agree with you, I've got 3 vag vehicles but even I know civic type r's are amazing drivers cars & the people who buy them aren't bothered about fancy touchscreen systems that don't work or having boring black interiors.
I still prefer the styling on the ep3 that's my favorite civic of all time there are too much plastic fake trims and 50k wow just wow that's a lot of money.
Conservative buyers like this is why Alfa Romeo dropped both the red and tan interior options on the Giulia, IIRC since 2021 only black is still available. 😔 Not that the Giulia had matching carpets. I think it's unfortunate you can't order your Giulia in traditional Alfa Red over tan interior (yet that is still the highest resale value colour combination for a Ferrari, while on Alfa it's discontinued, go figure?!).
Yep, tricky one. Yes it’s sweeter to drive than R but R is a better all rounder though Clubsport Mk8 is cheaper than R, closer dynamically to Civic and ultimately it’s a nice, classy Golf and 8.5 with new screen will be even better and around £43k
@@volkswizard exactly my thoughts. The Mk8 Clubsport is better value and probably quite a bit nicer to live with. Probably somewhat less involving but also way better in daily tasks. Great review as always though!
Not at all. You can easily spec a golf r to 50k. The Honda is 50k with everything on, barely any options to add. And the engineering you’re getting for the money is closer to a Porsche gt3 than a golf. Not to mention you’re getting something much rarer than it’s rivals. Honda have no desire to sell huge numbers in order to maintain the brand value of type r.
Great short video - would love to see one of your longer road tests in it - it’s certainly an acquired taste, compared to the VAG group hot hatches, but, I have always enjoyed being a bit left field with my car choices
Left field is good and I wish I was more adventurous (Aston Martin instead of Porsche for example) but there is always something that I can’t live with - for example why does Civic have red front seats and black at the back? This doesn’t not make it faster and just looks sloppy and not acceptable at any price let alone 50 big ones. I didn’t notice this until the edit BTW
@@volkswizard "for example why does Civic have red front seats and black at the back? " It's tradition, the same as two seatbelts in the back row only (which is dumb, but tradition). Just trying to be honest and transparent👼. I don’t have to keep advertisers happy like nearly every other review platform so I didn’t have any preconceived ideas of whether I’d like it or not. Overall it was ok but I discovered things I’d not read about that do cloud my opinion of it especially at £50k. The red front/black rear seats I only noticed later and are a bit odd too. hmmm. says seats are alright, they are probably some of the best seats in a production car out right now. Talks about the fake vent out back but does not mention that every other vent is actually functional, also the wing is functional. Talks about interior but its actually a great interior, the red carpets are wicked and way better than all the dumb touch screen stuff that manufacturers are putting on their cars now a days. Also this car is pretty subdued, appart from the wing and the tripple exhaust its a wide body civic, its pretty handsome too, honda hit the nail in the head.
Didn’t need +R in this context, as I said in video we started in sport then comfort then back to sport for the fun bit on the hill. On the bowl it was sport then comfort to test high speed ride quality - I know not many other reviewers bothers with that but it’s how the car will get driven a lot

@volkswizard Well, if you didn't use the drive mode that best shows the power of this engine, why were you complaining about acceleration? .....When you were trying to compare the fl5, to this golf?....Should have put the car's engine in +R mode. In the individual settings, Leave the suspension in comfort ...So you could of at least used all of the engine, in your review RUclipsr .
Nice one Matt! That's another to add to the list of why they won't sell many; No auto Looks are a bit OTT (still) Too much red inside (and black back seats!) Price.
They only intend to sell 9,600-10,000 units per year globally AFAIK. Which is not very many, but then again the KIA Stinger only sold 25,000 units per year globally and that was a full model range, not just a subvariant of an economy car. Honda has their 8-speed dual clutch which was only designed for low torque or their 10-speed automatic designed for high torque, if they wanted a dual-clutch they would have to design it or buy it from Getrag like Renault [the only dual-clutch for cars Honda have is the 9-speed longitudinal transaxle from the NSX which is no use -- they have a number of motorcycle dual-clutch boxes too, which have a bit of a patchy reputation in the Gold Wing]. Some of the costs are already amortised with the North American-only Integra Type S which is predominantly the same car. I thought that would have the 10-speed auto optional, but it does not. The TLX Type S [V6 twin-turbo] uses the Honda 10-speed auto though.

Sold mine for an RS4. Fun car but a crap daily.
Audio is really poor, just doesn’t sound natural.
Interesting review.
I would be interested to know what you think of other rivals, like the 128Ti, Megane RS and i30N.
I’m miffed that I missed the 128 ti when it was on BMW’s press fleet and don’t think it’s coming back. M135i was good though. I30N I drove at Millbrook in 2019 I think. Need to try auto version but again out of production so needs to be used. Same issue with Megane sadly but will try and find used examples in due course 👍
@@volkswizard Thank you. (I wasn't expecting a reply!) If you ever get a chance, I think your style would lend itself well to such a comparison on video.
Idk, the way cars are these days, I’m liking “dated”
I know what you mean
Despite only owning vag cars I've always been a big Honda vtec especially 90s and early 2000s but this is just too expensive
Is that a 208?😂😂
Is it lost?😂
Thanks for the review! Would you say the Clubsport S feels just as special?
But Civic is still special, just with we could have a wingless car with no red inside and 2 exhaust tips or even black tips, silver wheels would be nice too👍
@@volkswizard thanks for a great reply! Yeah you can't beat class of a golf..👍
Im in a 1st generation gr yaris cp it cost me 34k ! I could not afford the latest yaris up 11k in 3 years 😢 good job im still in love with it ❤
red carpets remind me of my old MG Metro 🤑
God bless 🇬🇧
Didnt he realise he could go into individual mode have comfort suspension and put everything else in R mode he seem to just have a comfort mode or sport never got the full use out of the car.didnt seem to no much about the car.😮
I love the Type R I’ve seen only one here in Brisbane there over $70,000 way to expensive and only a manual option not an everyday car for me
£50k for a Civic Type R?! If I had the money I'd put half of that on a clean EK9.
Decent car but it's like the red carpet at the Oscar's but you're at the vue cinema but it looks like a great drive but give me a golf any day 👍
I think it’s the drivers choice of hatchback.
Would I buy one .definitely not
Buying a 2025 in black, may do something about that tri exhaust tho it is a bit much
Nice review, but interesting that despite these being out for 2 years I don't think I've ever seen one on the road!
great video thank you very much
but the clubsport s looks way better and smaller modern hot hatch are very big
This is the Honda Accord type R! 😂
I can see the similarities - I think of the switchgear is carried over unchanged 🤨
@@volkswizard I think Honda takes the approach of "ain't broke, don't fit it" with switchgear! The lack of dedicated rear window switches for the driver's door on the id3 hasn't earned any praise AFAIK...
red carpets mg metro maestro
I knew I’d seen them somewhere before. Did MG Montego get them too?
@@volkswizard stick with VW , you’re clueless as usual
Perhaps stick with walk-arounds of ford transit vans @@bestcrazyboy8487
@@volkswizardwhat’s wrong with the switch gear?
The touch sensitive screen on a mark 8 Golf is the most useless thing I have ever tried on any car 🤷♀️
@@bestcrazyboy8487I totally agree with you, I've got 3 vag vehicles but even I know civic type r's are amazing drivers cars & the people who buy them aren't bothered about fancy touchscreen systems that don't work or having boring black interiors.
265 width tyres !
Yep, that’s the same as a Boxster GTS rears!
I still prefer the styling on the ep3 that's my favorite civic of all time there are too much plastic fake trims and 50k wow just wow that's a lot of money.
Thought it was a strict four seater?
Really? That’s a bit odd for a car in that segment
@@volkswizard It's tradition.
Nice segue from rear cupholders to cockpit!
Looks the Bollox , unlike the golf R , it looks the part , would I pay 50k No , I would buy a i20N and leave 30k in the bank
Me too, even I30N makes more sense and leaves cash in bank and you can have an auto
@@volkswizardwhy the hell would you want an auto in a hot hatch??
Ffs that's the most ridiculous statement I've heard
Living with that carpet would do my eyes on a daily basis. I do think if they knocked 5k off the price it would be more competitive.
Agreed x2
Conservative buyers like this is why Alfa Romeo dropped both the red and tan interior options on the Giulia, IIRC since 2021 only black is still available. 😔 Not that the Giulia had matching carpets. I think it's unfortunate you can't order your Giulia in traditional Alfa Red over tan interior (yet that is still the highest resale value colour combination for a Ferrari, while on Alfa it's discontinued, go figure?!).
Nice car but it's ridiculously expensive for what it is. Makes even the Golf R look like a good value.
Imagine how many of these they would have sold if it was £40k rather than £50k.
At one point, the Integra Type R was available with red *or* blue *or* yellow *or* black interior (with matching carpets and floormats), but ALL of them had a black rear seat.
Not for me.
Quite a funny video, wiz tring his best not to be too enthusiastic with the praise ,but failing ,😂😂
But for driving it’s very good
@@volkswizard thanks very much for you reply ,really appreciated. I been a honda man for 20 years and owned 13, including all type R . But as honda no longer the car I very owned I bought a octavia 245 vrs , and I've been converted!!
Absolutely love it and I'm toying with doing a stage 1 revo remap . Your thoughts?
@@stevenvater2681 you owned a type r and think a Octavia is good lmao. I smell shite
very nice review
Nice intro 😂
Thanks 🙌🏻
We won't go there 7:34 😂
Nein!
hmmm. says seats are alright, they are probably some of the best seats in a production car out right now.
Did you have the engine in + R mode? Or comfort?
If they had a DCT they’d sell more
Nice one Matt! That's another to add to the list of why they won't sell many;
No auto
Looks are a bit OTT (still)
Too much red inside (and black back seats!)
Price.
They definitely wouldn’t.
Doubt they care about selling more, it’s not a high production model anyway. There are those who give Honda props for sticking to manual only..
No they wouldn't, the people these cars are aimed at 100% want a manual box, it's a hot hatch ffs for drivers who want to be involved 🤦♂️ dear god
