    As someone who works at Gamestop Canada, the new/preowned game is something that actually happens quite often behind the scenes. Like when Gamestop buys new games at a discount from dead video games stores, they put them in "used" condition for whatever reason, probably to push people to buy them faster.

    • @SPNarwhal
      @SPNarwhal Год назад +11

      There was a pretty big controversy when the first Xenoblade came out on Wii in NA because I believe it was exclusive to Gamestop and in limited numbers. So what Gamestop would do is open all these new games and sell them for $90 USD used instead of $60 USD new like they were supposed to. I think there were some news articles about it. They may have done a similar thing with the Metroid Prime Collection on Wii as well. There's a good reason why Gamestop is so hated lol.

    • @SPNarwhal
      @SPNarwhal Год назад

      @@Eliterubberduck True, and I thought about that, but that was them marking used so they could choose the price and make it higher-- these brand new / marked as used games would make more sense to be marked as used to not include the publisher's cut. I assume in their system it separates the used and new games into sales numbers since the margins from the used games are purely GameStop's to keep. If they purchased games from another store and then co-mingled the inventory with their main supply it would likely mess a lot of things up.

    In regards to the new games not being sealed and or have dints and other damage on them. I worked for a major video game store in the uk and how we sorted new games that we got from a delivery, for example: Say we get 10 copies of a game, we would unseal one of the new copies, remove the discs and manuals etc, put those into a a case or sleeve of their own and use the game case that we just unsealed as a display box for the shop floor and the guts of that game would be put aside in storage with the other 9 copies. And when the unsealed game case is on the shop floor they could get damaged or gain wear and tear from people browsing, and when all 9 copies from storage are sold, the last copy of the game is sold with the game case that was on display. It may be the case that GameStop uses a similar work model or it could be just unfortunate 😅

    While most where $10 games a couple where $30-$40 and of course those where not sealed.

    Former Gamestop Employee here, Demon's Souls was "moved to used", which is a thing they will sometimes do with new games that sit in their inventory for an outrageous amount of time. Often times this is because, since Gamestop can set their own prices for pre-owned games, the game's used price outstrips its massively depreciated new MSRP. Like back when Xenoblade Chronicles was only on the Wii and was a Gamestop exclusive in the US, they would have brand new copies marked as "used" so they could sell them for upwards of $70. This also happened with Metroid Prime Triolgy. As for any "New" game that is opened like the Arkane collection there, that's because it was a display copy from a retail location and you got what was their last copy. Displays are made for new games by cutting open sealed copies, putting the contents inside a differently colored (white) envelope than the (yellow) used games, and then keeping them in a separately filed drawer. None of this is me excusing their actions- I hate gutted store displays, they suck- just explaining why they are how they are.
    Some speculative insight on Demon's Souls not having a manual- it also has the much later PS3 branding than a game from 2009 should have- Demon's Souls originally had the vertical PS3 lable with the "spider man" font and the red PS3 spine stamp. That greatest hits copy is using the post-slim PS3 branding that they used up until the PS4 came out, and my best guess is that they reprinted a bunch of copies of Demon's Souls in late 2012-2013 maybe after Dark Souls got big, and they avoided reprinting the game's very thick and expensive manual as a cost saving measure.

    I know you are getting a lot of "former GameStop employee" comments so one more wouldn't hurt I guess. Ha. Whenever we got games, we would have to open them and put the disc in those white or yellow envelopes and lock them in a drawer behind the counter. This is known as "gutting". Then the case goes on display. If someone sees the case on display and brings it up to the counter, the disc is taken out from the drawer and then put in the game case and sold. Then another case from the back will be put up on display.
    So there's definitely been conversation of what counts as new since the game hasn't been played before so the condition of the disc is new, but the package of the game case itself has been unsealed.
    I guess it may make the process faster between the worker and consumer with getting the game and protection of the game. Like someone can't just come in and grab a game and run out since they aren't behind glass cases or tied down like in other stores. But the register process has always been sort of convoluted so I think you could throw that theory out the window. Ha.

    Sadly you won't ever get a manual from a PS2/GC/OG XBox game if it came from the GameStop factory in Texas. Since the manuals from that era had the section in the back to write notes in, someone at corporate decreed that the manuals should be tossed b/c if one had naughty stuff written in it and it was sold to someone they were afraid the parents would go to the press and raise holy hell about it.
    When the former lead person of the GameStop TX warehouse posted that in the GS Reddit a few years ago all the employees in there went full shocked Pikachu face. Nothing they could say would convince corporate to change that policy.

      The stuff in the middle of the disk isn't from the customer that traded the disk in, it's residue from GameStop's terrible resurfacing machine. Just a little tidbit about that Demon's Souls copy. It could've been an unsold New copy that was moved to the Pre Owned distribution status in their system because they get rid of the New SKU as they do with most old titles after a certain amount of time. The new Dishonored game was definitely new, but it was a floor copy where the game was opened and the case was displayed on the floor while the game was in a sleeve behind the counter. It is still sold as "New" because it's never been played or even left the store in most cases. The reason you get them from online orders is because most online orders are actually pulling inventory directly from store shelves and packaged/shipped by the enployees instead of from a distribution center

    Former GS assistant manager here. So GameStop sells new "pre-owned" games once they've essentially paid what they owe to the distributor. Usually with games that are VERY old in that generation. They convert the game to "pre-owned" for their own record keeping and then can make full profit off the game. If it rang ad new, they'd only make their $5-10. And the "new" opened games, you got their gutted store copy because the online orders are just sent to random stores who then ship it to you. Generally they pick the worst condition copy because they don't have to hear in person customers complain.

    I used to manage an independent game store so I can explain the “New” game being opened thing. When we got in a shipment of a game (let’s say 10 copies for this example) we would keep 9 of them sealed behind the counter organized in drawers, but one of the copies would get “gutted” (idk if that is an industry term or just what we called it). What this meant is we took the disc and all codes out of the case and put them in sleeves behind the counter so that the case could be one the shelves on the floor to represent we have the game new. When the floor copy sold it meant it was our last copy and we would take it into the back where we had a sealer that would re-shrink wrap the game. It wasn’t the style of shrink wrap so a collector could easily tell the difference, but it was good for the average consumer. As a small store, we couldn’t afford to custom make cases for each game that came out as we essentially only made a couple of dollars on new games anyways, but GameStop can definitely afford to/already do with the preorder boxes they have on shelves.
    While I wasn’t (and still am not) a fan of it, I understand the practice of it for smaller companies.

    I used to work at GameStop and we would have to tell people they need to take their game outside and open it up before bringing it in to trade it if it was still sealed because we weren’t allowed to take in unopened games. Also, you can receive and open copy of a brand new game if the store has only one copy in stock and that is the copy they put on their shelves for people to handle and look at.

    If you trade in a brand new game game stop still considers it pre-owned. I bought a ps5 bundle with MLB and traded in instantly even still sealed they put the pre-owned sticker on it.

    the red ps3 game cases im really conflicted on bc on the one hand red is my favorite color but on the other a lot of first party ps3 games had more artwork on the reverse side of the box art which you can't see in the red cases. if they were transparent red it wouldn't quite have fixed it but it would've been better at least

    Matty, maybe try Whatnot next for used retro games. The prices aren't going to be any better than Gamestop but you'll probably score some much better quality cases/discs.

    The demon soul's one is easy to explain. Basically - if the disk is loose and they can hear it rattling around, they aren't allowed to sell it as new. It's classed as either defective or pre-owned.
    The more you know. 😊😊

    The only explanation I can give for the missing game is stores were understaffed this holiday and holiday hires weren't trained to use the register so on Black Friday they were tasked with pulling all the orders for the Ship From Store tm orders such as yours, and unfortunately you got one of the ones that didn't pay enough attention to what they were doing.
    I had to fix an issue at my store where the store about 6 miles down sent someone the completely wrong game by mixing up the orders.

    • @MSUHitman
      @MSUHitman Год назад +2

      Also an entire order has to be fulfilled by one store. If any part of the order can't be fulfilled, then the order is passed to the next closest store that supposedly has all the items.

    • @rein5105
      @rein5105 Год назад

      @@MSUHitman it could also be that someone pulled all the games but accidentally left it out without realizing it. Although it is a very good and logical explanation for the incident

    Lol I spent half that on 1 game just the other day… granted it was a flawless copy of Smash 64 (cib), but still. Apparently my local retro game shop had someone come in and dump several untouched games from the 80s and 90s that were gathering dust in storage for years like a time capsule. They even had a flawless cib copy of Mega Man 1 on NES running for $800 😭 I’d have happily bought it if I was stupidly rich
