As a GS employee in regards to the DS games, I'd say about 90% of our trade ins from customers don't include their cases. Most people either bring them as cartridges in a travel case, or they just bring them as a handful of games. It's definitely the most frustrating system to try and collect for as a game collector. PS3 and 360 games are a 50/50 in regards to getting a real case versus the fake ones we print out
But then when games came in with the cases we were instructed to throw the cases out because the planogram had nowhere to put DS games except for the small locked glass case that only had room for the now infamous clam shells. I collected almost 200 empty DS cases between 2018 and 2019 from trade-ins and donated them to Pink Gorilla in Seattle.
@@MSUHitman I suppose it would depend on store then. Back when we had a dedicated section for the console and could have cases on the wall both DS and 3DS. The cartridges were gutted and put in the drawer. Once they removed them from the wall and we kept them behind glass, my store would always display the valuable games. And then keep the extras in a drawer (like what we do with PS3/360 now). If a customer came in looking for DS games, we'd print them a list of our inventory. Since 2019, I feel as though I've only seen a handful of cases traded in with their game. I'd feel terrible throwing away game boxes outright. I'm glad you could donate the ones you saved. As a collector, I've resorted to some mom and pop retro stores and occasionally ebay for my collecting of DS/3DS games
I shamelessly use to dumpster dive my nearby Gamestop 7+ years ago and what I would get everytime i went were empty cases. I still have em in my shed which include 50+ 3ds game cases with manuals. I'm glad i kept them all this time because now people will pay just for the case and manual.. lmao
I’m glad you said this because I felt attacked for throwing out my DS cases lol It made no sense to me as a kid to keep them when I had all my games stored in a travel bag. I am sorry to all collectors getting my caseless DS games now!
exact same man, I've been picking up 3ds and ds games again and it feels great to have a more bolstered game collection that isn't just the few switch cases.
Yeah, I’m not with you at all. I have relished not being so tied down with physical possessions. It’s like the saying from Fight Club goes “the things you own end up owning you”.
Gamestop should absolutely be a RetroGameStop. I needed to get a DualShock 3 controller to play the Metal Gear series, my local gamestop didn't have one, neither did the city over. Bought a fake one online, returned it and bought one from an old friend.
Seen a few comments on these and want to echo the sentiment: it'd be really cool to see a video of a haul from a small / local game shop to see what you can find. Or maybe an interview with a small / local shop owner on the retro game market.
GTA 4 was seriously ahead of its time. It’s really blurry on FPS boost but it is still great to play in 60 FPS. The physics are still the best to date for GTA
Something to note about blue label ps3 games, Drakengard 3 and Spiderman weren't the only games to get it. Around the time of the PS4's launch PS3 boxarts were changed to match the color of the PS4's branding at that time from late 2013 to around the end of 2014. Other games with the blue label include Gran Turismo 6, MLB the show 14, Murdered Soul Suspect and a bunch more.
It's crazy how much difference a few years makes for the video game market. It was only about 5 years ago that I was able to get stuff like Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga, Silent Hill Shattered Memories (PS2), and Kuon for around 10-15 bucks each. Now you would be lucky to get just the box and manual for a decent price.
Its crazy to think there was ever a time where retro gaming was a budget friendly hobby. The DS and Wii games being so pricey hit especially hard for me. Games that sold millions of copies less than two decades ago are selling for close to or higher than retail now.
@@segasonic23 What's stupid is how they have the audacity to sell pokemon for high prices. It's literally one of the biggest franchises in the world there's copies everywhere

For the DS/3DS cases, I think it’s actually GameStop who threw out the cases. It’s likely they were traded in CIB, but to save space, GS would trash all the cases and manuals and then out the game cards in glass display cases. Truly heartbreaking…
I second this comment. I used to work at GameStop during the end of the DS/3DS lifecycle, that I was told to only keep the cartridge and throw away the boxes. I would try to save the ones that seem to be rare and worthwhile.

For Metal Gear Solid the Legacy Collection I'd say get your money back and buy it brand new on Amazon for $40. Just picked it up myself and it was still sealed with everything. Definitely worth every dollar I payed!👍🏻
$40 for a sealed copy is good considering that game stop is selling a used copy for $30 to get it brand new for $10 more is definitely worth it nice find.

I always wondered about things like Manuals and boxes being missing. Like if I'm buying say a NES, SNES or N64 game...okay I get it, those boxes weren't exactly meant to be kept. But why do so many people not have boxes for things like the Switch? You can find so many listing for just the cartridge (and selling it at a complete price at that). Or I've been on a bit of a PS1 and PS2 buying spree lately...the number of listing with the disc in it's case with no manual, is just weird to me....what are you doing with these manuals?
Yeah I recently bought Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from GS preowned and it didn't include the OG box, like wtf, did the original owner feed the case to their dog or throw it in the garbage upon beating the game? Luckily I was able to get a replacement case for it
Matty, you should really play that GTA 4 also as the 2 Dlcs, it is great and it just works. For me that is clearly the best game of the GTA series and i will be so glad to see a "i have finally played GTA 4 on this channel"

Nice, I also picked up 007 Legends not that long ago on PS3 (along with the Goldeneye Remake on PS3) pity that the "Final Level", or just the level based on Skyfall I think it was? for 007 Legends was added through DLC Post Release and has since been Delisted so you can never get that now 😥
Back in 2019 I got a Genesis with about 5 games from Gamestop and it was honestly a pretty great experience. The prices were decent, everything worked fine, and it was packaged well. My only gripe is some less than beautiful labels but thats fine. I'm just upset that specialty stores have been closing. Toys R Us, Gamestop, even Radio Shack. Not to mention the decline of malls. Very sad to see all around.
The luck I get with GameStop online is pretty insane lol. Just off the top of my head ive gotten cib soul silver, trails of cold steel 1-2, Metroid prime trilogy, Mario party 6 and vita games in cases
FYI: You can still get the MGS:Legacy Collection brand new from Amazon. Its the 2nd edition of the game so no art book. I got one for $25 late last year but it looks like its gone up since then
As far as PS3 Blue Labels go the ones that I can think of off the top of my head are Rambo, Drakengard, Murdered: Soul Suspect, and Amazing Spider-Man 2. I’m pretty sure that there are more than that as well.
I was told by my friend who is a GameStop manager that she has been instructed by her boss to throw out all 3ds & ds cases. That they take up too much space.
worked for several years as a store manager/ Leader (they couldnt make up their minds on what to call us xD) All youre doing is buying it online and it ships from the closest gamestop store that has the inventory. Only rarely are you getting anything from actual warehouse.
Gamestop throws away cases and boxes, it isn't just the trade in customers. It saves a ton on storage space, and space is money. Also even though it's an online order, you can go into a store for a return on the MGS game.
I ordered like 5 games during last year's Gamestop Christmas sale. Most of them (usually the amazing ones) came in a disc sleeve and the rest were in the cheap knockoff 360 cases, one of which was broken. Only one intact with the original case was Splinter Cell Blacklist. Wonder why.
Just caught my first RR show and sorry to say, I did laugh a bit when the bad games come out of their packaging. Interesting and sad news about the DS boxes! Looking forward to the next show!
10 years ago my parents got me a small case for all my ds games because the cases took up so much space. Ended up throwing all the cases away. I regret it today but back then it saved so much space
Can we hear the outcome of the customer support phone call please? Really curious. Most calls/ interactions I've had with GameStop's customer support have been mid.
Gamestop needs to do exactly what you said, rather than letting stores like DK Oldies hoard old CIB games and retro consoles and mark them up for ridiculous prices. Real gamers deserve this stuff!

Legacy collection also comes with a download code for a couple of the other MGS games as well so you got double screwed
My last online GameStop purchase was on their 4 for $20 deal. Only 4/11 had original case I returned 5 of those without original artwork.
Great video! $200 for this is sad but the Golden Eye print out was worth it
Gamestop throws away cases and boxes, it isn't just the trade in customers. It saves a ton on storage space, and space is money. Also even though it's an online order, you can go into a store for a return on the MGS game.
9:00 in this clip, the dude who made this is peacefully resting in the sky, rip yeardley diamond 🙏
I love these videos lol
How come when I walk in a GameStop I see more inventory for toys, cards and stuffed animals rather than games???
Thank God for Gameboy and DS flash carts. I hope someday someone makes one that works on the Switch. The Virtual Boy got one, which is really cool.
I'm pretty sure you can get the metal gear legacy collection new for like $25 on Amazon still. I got one just a few months ago
That was an atrocious lot, all said and done....jesus.
I ordered like 5 games during last year's Gamestop Christmas sale. Most of them (usually the amazing ones) came in a disc sleeve and the rest were in the cheap knockoff 360 cases, one of which was broken. Only one intact with the original case was Splinter Cell Blacklist. Wonder why.
I used to throw my DS cases in my toy bin or closet and had a DS case I kept the games in. I assume most people did that with handhelds.
Just caught my first RR show and sorry to say, I did laugh a bit when the bad games come out of their packaging. Interesting and sad news about the DS boxes! Looking forward to the next show!
These videos are addicting
10 years ago my parents got me a small case for all my ds games because the cases took up so much space. Ended up throwing all the cases away. I regret it today but back then it saved so much space
You should try Game x change out here in Texas, they carry alot of retro from jaguar to ps5 xbx
