Oh my god, Wynton Rufer. Still in his early 20s and during a time where nobody knew him in the football world. Suddenly turns up at Werder Bremen in Germany a few years later and becomes one of the greatest footballers from the Oceanian region. Wir lieben dich Kiwi. Nur der SVW.
What a passionate set of fans in this footage. Although played in neutral ground (Singapore), but 60,000 people came to full every inch of the stadium.
@@duncanwcraig9668 in Singapore. Taiwan and China were not getting along. No way China can played in Taiwan Singapore has 90% Chinese population that's why the stadium was full
I remember watching this game through a 12" black-white TV in a neighbor's home. I was 13 years old. since then I started watching and playing football/soccer.
@@allwhitesfootballhistory8861 It was a friendly match in Beirut on 9 oct 1996 with a 1-1 result. Lebanon's goal scored by Vartan Ghazarian but no video is available right now. I will keep trying.
Movie needs to be made of the whole campaign. Just reading the book All Whites 82 by John Matheson and Sam Malcolmson again. Amazing story of David vs Goliath proportions, redemption for the Brit contingent, great characters, shattering lows and crazy odds (AW's needing an unlikely 5 goal margin against Saudi otherwise China would go directly to Spain) and ridiculous highs (actually beating Saudi 5-0 in the desert) not to mention the 15 odd qualifying games (the longest path by any nation at that time to the WC). Tom Hooper did a great job directing Damned United, a gritty football classic on a shoe string budget. Something like that would be perfect.
I'm a Chinese netizen But I don't want to make excuses for my national team, because at that time, the three best teams in Asia were Saudi Arabia, China and Iran. Although New Zealand and Saudi Arabia together beat China, the referees were really fine. It was a tactic, we were afraid of New Zealand, Australia and Iran By the way, in the 2022 World Cup Intercontinental Play-off, Oceania will be No.1 against Asia No.5, which makes it possible that New Zealand will take on China again, but we are ready for revenge
Yes, Murray Allison’s commentary was awful, but given that he was a sports producer, not a commentator, who had to be drafted in at short notice, probably not a bad effort
@@allwhitesfootballhistory8861 I am a bit curious and I may be tempted to ask... are you the one who gave all the script for somebody to publish it in a magazine called Soccerama? Because I have that issue and maybe, by chance, you are that one.
Was just money, for all the clearances - way beyond me scope, no one keen to back it. Got it made, just can't release it. If it was meant to be it would've happened, c'est la vie :)
@@allwhitesfootballhistory8861 have you got the tvnz highlights vhs tape from the qualifying rounds? I have it , it was back in the day when you could buy tapes off tvnz
@P B I don't know about that. If they really wanted China to qualify they should made sure NZ didn't won in Saudi by 5 goals. However, this game was playing in Singapore and 60,000 Chinese were there to support China

I think Wynton Rufer was a teenager in this game,
This is absolute gold, Te Papa needs to have this projected on the wall
now that'd be an exhibit and a half! but knowing how much clearance for footage costs, probably nto viable!! But glad you enjoyed these highlights :)

Awesome time to be alive

wow, me too .. 13 years old. just lucky we got a small black-white TV . . I think 12" too, a year before ..
Nice and rare video. Thanks from Lebanon.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it :) NZ played Lebanon in 1996 but it wasn't shown on TV here - do you know anyone who may have it?
@@allwhitesfootballhistory8861 Hello. I will try to check it.

Feature doco has been made, covers entire campaign, but funding couldn't be sourced for the clearances for its release.
Gold.
if i am not mistaken, the playoff game was played in Singapore ... isn't it ?
Yes
You Kiwis need to boost football in your country. New Zealand seems to always process some mysterious power if they invest seriously.
Rumour has it the ref never got the briefcase of cash for the match

Agree or not, AFC and OFC should unite to form an Asia-Pacific confederation.

Where did you get all those highlights in such a good condition? I love it!
during research for a doco I was making - just wanted to share them here with other AWs fans :)

That ref would have sent off all of the All Whites if he had a chance....
Not quite as bad as the Indonesian bloke in Auckland. He didnt even pretend to be impartial....
I am a Kiwi, and a huge Zeppelin
New Zealand game plan was right
Commentary lacked passion, but great footage.
No, that IS a passionate New Zealand commentary - we tend to understate things ;)
