  • German President Frank-Walter Steinmeieron Tuesday said a proposed trip to Kyiv had been rejected by the Ukrainian leadership.
Steinmeier had been planning to make a joint visit to Ukraine with Polish President Andrzej Duda and their Estonian, Lithuanian and Latvian counterparts "a strong signal of joint European solidarity with Ukraine."
But "that apparently wasn't wanted in Kyiv" Steinmeier said while visiting the Polish capital Warsaw.
Ukraine has previously been highly critical of the German president over his connections with Russia and the leading role he played as former foreign minister in improving relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the case of Steinmeier it is not so much misunderstanding the situation as an elephant remembering a particular hunter that has tried to shoot it several times in the past. Steinmeier was Schroeder's chief of staff when the now infamous Nord Stream was first devised and constructed. Steinmeier was Merkel's foreign minister when Germany casually dismissed Ukraine and Georgia's European aspirations. Germany might have forgotten. But Ukraine remembers.

@@Anonymous-ld7je and if you knew the name of the man responsible for appeasing Germany you might have realized I referred to him already. However Germany itself has shown that appeasement sometimes works. That's why there is now one Germany and not West- and East-Germany...
The same can be said about Glasnost & Perestroika. Many of the countries we are talking about now owe their freedom and democracy to the peaceful end of the Soviet Union.
Yeah, you seem to have forgotten about that part. The Soviet Union was successfully defeated. By peace.
That does not mean - and indeed current events prove it - that appeasement can't fail. But also it's not guaranteed to fail.
As I initially wrote: It's sad we will never know if appeasement could've worked. The split strategy of NATO, the EU and Germany ("F*** the EU" - Victoria Garland, ambassador to the EU appointed by Barack Obama) likely is causally linked to Russia's aggressive stance.
It doesn't excuse it, but it failed to stop it.

Otherwise it loses the chance to define how it will be seen by others in the future. It is painfully plain that German forceful policy led Europe straight back to the atrocities from the WWII. The country needs to own up to this and start rebuilding trust of it's allies with firm actions. Actually, it was a brilliant move by ukraine, tactically and strategically. The USA just committed another billion of heavy arms to ukraine. Meanwhile germany still sends 1 billion dollars per day to buy putins oilgas.

Maybe Zelenskyy knows that Germany has been saying one thing publicly but privately have not been doing a darn thing that is helping Ukrainian security.

Exactly, Germany is playing safe as they secretly dealing & collaborating with Russia at the same time being a member of European Union & NATO that should be protecting the interest of European Countries that is threatened by this Russia's action.. And if ever Russia totally Occupy Ukraine they will still benefit more from Russia as they don't act more like other European Countries that act more..

Germany voted to keep Ukraine out of NATO. Many Ukrainians feel that Ukraine not being part of nato gave Putin license to invade. Germany has lost face in its initial responses to Ukraine wanting to be part of NATO.
