It’s hard to describe what this anime is about. It’s a great anime to watch if you are familiar with the isekai genre since it takes a lot of tropes from the genre and uses them as a springboard for the MC’s wild fantasies and story arcs.
Great show. The use of tropes for the comedy moments and then the lore thats added over time about the world. Then the characters, so many interesting ones that ended up being pretty memorable for me. Funny I’ve been just rewatching it and then seeing your reaction show up is perfect.
I am a huge fan. Mainly because this show flows so much smoothly than almost all of the others of its genre. It hits the comedy, plot, slice of life moments; basically if you have an enjoyment of anime in general, this show hits the 'classic' moments from those anime.
I'll only say this as not to spoil ... the show has it's own unique identity which makes for a wild ride. I only watched episode one when it dropped (not expecting much from it) due to running out of new anime to watch that day. Now, it's one of those "must watch the second it drops" anime on my list which is very rare these days. I'll try any anime but there will never be more than 2 or 3 of those each season (which usually get determined by episode 3-6) but it made it on episode one.
I am atomic. I love love love this series. Cid is an amazing protagonist. It is an incredibly well constructed anime. The openings are by OxT, who have done openings from Overlord, prince of stride alternative, and various other anime.
This anime is PEAK COMEDY. If you don't take it too seriously, you will enjoy it a lot. It's a very well done parody of generic isekais but with some very good scenes and flashy fights to make some "serious" look.
"I thoght we would be focusing on him" Yeah, that's exactly the point of the opening lol. It's genius how this op speaks so much about Cid's character and the whole point of the show without giving out absolutely nothing for someone who doesn't knows it.
This is one of my favourite series of all time. It's WAY better than it has any right to be and not to mention It's HILLARIOUS. It's one of few "comedy" anime that manages to remain epic and doesn't feel like a parody of It'self despite being very silly at moments. It's basically a totally deadpan homage / parody of the OP Protagonist Isekai genre. And It NAILS it. I WOULD recommend the ED's but ... err. You might get a red card on that one chief!
If there was a good comparison for the MC of The Eminence in Shadow, he'd be the closest to Ainz Ooal Gown in terms on how they bullshit their way through whatever they're in. Yet still, The Eminence in Shadow has its own appeal that you definitely should discover for yourself. I guarantee it is worth it
Eminence in Shadow is an isekai with an outright OP MC who has his head up his ass about what's really going on around him. It's kinda funny because what I love about this series is also why the MC pisses me off so much. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the series, but how I feel about the MC is why the series for me ranks behind Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, and even Konosuba in terms of my favorite isekais. And yes, at some points Subaru, Rudeus, and Kazuma (the respective MCs) also piss me off, but there's something about Cid that just triggers me.
Protagonist in mushoku, rezero, and konosuba is SHITTY boring ass character than this unique existence : Cid kagenou aka Shadow. Try match who in any isekai who has it like Shadow Fr.
Your free to your own opinion but personally I don't get why. The other MCs you listed, despite being good most of the time are also well known for having constant and annoying sexual fantasies all throughout their series'. Cid is the only one of the bunch who just doesn't care about that and works for his own goals. I'm not saying he's perfect, and you're allowed to not like him, but I personally see him as a lot more carefree of a protagonist. Maybe that's why you don't like him as much though, as he doesn't seem to value the pain of others as much as he probably should.

The funny thing about these openings is that unless you see episode 1 you will have no chance of guessing the plot based off of them.
Its almost funny how much the first opening will definitely give you the wrong impression of what the show is about.

Comedy 11/10. Definitely check it out. Also opening 1 is a jebait. But hey, the whole show is one big jebait, so it kinda works out.
