- Clinical Assessment of Cognitive Function in Psychiatry (Bedside Clinical Cognitive Assessment). The History taking, Mental Status Examination (MSE) and Cognitive function assessments are the most important diagnostic tools in Psychiatry or mental disorders. These tools are essential to make an accurate diagnosis because there are no laboratory investigations available for diagnosing mental illness or psychiatric disorders. The components of case/history taking are described in the following video. The material presented here is intended to enable students and mental health professionals to follow a uniform method of case taking in psychiatry.
It is impractical to examine everything in the cognitive function assessment, and as in most other areas of psychiatric disorders, the history remains pre-eminent in guiding subsequent cognitive functional examination. The central role of an informant, good history taking, keen observation, bedside assessment and the ability to immediately test hypotheses generated during the history taking, distinguish this means of cognitive function assessment and assists in making an accurate diagnosis.

Thanks for a nice I formative video . Sir , for knowing test judgement of a patient with delusion of infidelity , should I ask him the questions as you have told in this video or I can frame my own questions also .
Yes, the essences of semistructured assessment gives room for framing own questions depending upon the local language, culture and dialect
@@SureshBadaMath In the given situation can I ask the patient," What would you do if your wife needs to go out of the city for some office work without you?"
Sir what is s e e g test
Sir🙏...orientation about 'self' is 'orientation to person' but for 'persons other than self' is actually ' orientation to place' . I need some clarification from you..plz
For abstract thinking why do we need two different tests like asking for similarities as well as proverb test. Why just either of these is not sufficient for this purpose ?
Similarities and Differences are essential components of the General Intelligence and Reasoning. Two of the key skills any human being naturally develops, such that they can put the world around them into perspective. When there is subtle loss of abstract thinking occurs it hits the similarities first and later the differences in general situation. That means it even talks about the grade of loss
@@SureshBadaMath Thank you very much sir for clearing another doubt I had. But my basic confusion is often between the two tests namely a.) the test of similarities and differences and b.) the proverb test. Can we choose either 'a" or 'b' or there is some strong reason that compels us to use both of these?
Sir can you explain more about social judgment like what are the questions to ask with the patient?
Hi Karishma,
Social judgment - is assessed based on
a) past one month behaviour in social situations - was it appropriate or not
b) asking hypothetical questions-
“What would you do if you found a stamped envelope on the sidewalk?”
“What would you do if you see a house in a fire ?”
c) What is the future plan of the patient?
Based on response to above questions, clinician need to interpret social judgment
@@SureshBadaMath Thank you so much sir
Sir kindly teach us how to make and present long case formulation in exit exams 🙏
Okay sure
Sir, what's a bedside assessment and why is it called 'bedside'?
A professional can perform these tests at a patient's bedside and no need of separate room, table, chair and a dedicated testing professional. A professional need to perform these tests by himself/herself on day to day basis
@@SureshBadaMath You are a great help, sir. I'm learning so much everyday! Sincere thanks 🙏
Very nice 👍
