Andres Thomas, oh my God what a blast from the past. My EARLY Atlanta days....
Chipper Jones was at this game as a kid with his American Legion team as explained in his book, “Ballplayer”.
The Reds/Braves have had history. Before this Claudell Washington and Mario Soto were at each others throats for two STRAIGHT years
that was a great brawl and Soto threw the baseball at someone, which was so dangerous to do
@@javtimestwo Mario Soto was a real hothead, much like former Brave Pascual “I-285” Perez, my he rest in piece.
Claudell wanted to fight Charlie Hough for hitting him with a knuckleball
Jason (the one who posted this) and I were sitting on the third base side with a church group from Charlotte. This has always been a special game to us. Something I didn't remember and probably had never seen until seeing this was that Andres Thomas seemed to hesitate before getting to the mound, and then it's really Gullickson who comes at him. Anyway, this is such a good memory.
Yeah pitcher definitely wanted some.
@@seabrook1976 until he got some
@@AnonYmous-jp8uu hard to tell who got the worst of it in that dog pile. Love watching old brawl videos like this.
1987 was only the second year I watched MLB as I got into baseball the year before, been a fan every since and love my Reds.....87' was also the year I met Buddy Bell and some other guys at a signing...
At the trade deadline that season the Detroit Tigers needing some veteran pitching obtained Doyle Alexander from the Braves in exchange for a promising rookie named John Smoltz. Alexander went 9-0 for the Tigers after the trade. However he was smoked by the Minnesota Twins in the 1987 American League Championship Series. Alexander was soon out of baseball. John Smoltz went on to have a long distinguished career with Atlanta.
As a Reds fan living in Atlanta, I remember this game very well for one reason. A buddy of mine from high school, who was an outstanding baseball player in his own rite, was killed in an automobile accident earlier that morning. I didn't find out about it until the following Monday, June 22, 1987, I was heartbroken, R.I.P. Lawrence Miles...
1) Everyone took it to the Braves in those days. They sucked. 2). I’m really sorry about your friend. RIP
Sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss
you might be misremembering The braves won this game 8-6

Reds ended up losing.. I watched this game on tape over and over when I was a kid because I loved the fight.
I always hated that they still lost every time I watched it 😂
I remember this back in 1987. If I recall they fought again the next day on TBS
RIP Joe Morgan & Bo Diaz
I didn’t know Bo passed away
The plate umpire is Bill Williams. This is his next to last plate assignment. In his next plate assignment he was upended in a freak play at the plate and his broke his leg. 1987 was going to be his retirement year, but the broken leg forced him to retire immediately.
Wearing a plate coat while the base umpires wore short sleeve dress shirts on a warm day in Atlanta.
I remember Doyle Alexander could give up three taters in two innings or just as easily shut teams out. He was traded to the Tigers for Smoltz later this year and went 9-0 with a minuscule ERA, helping lead them to the AL East flag.
natch27
Braves definitely got the better end of that trade. Alexander for Smoltz.
@Shawn Lawson Get a washed up pitcher for a first ballot HOFer? yeah, not a bad deal
@@williamarchibald1378 no one knew that at the time the Braves were rebuilding and Detroit need a pitcher for the pennant run both teams got what they wanted
He was traded this year?? Didn't know he was still playing he's like 60 or something.
@@azathoth0820 Ha! I shoulda phrased it “later in the year.” He’s 71 now and probably throws as soft as he did in ‘87.
Thanks for posting! I've always wanted to see this since it happened. Now finally...huge Braves fan since 85.
Gullickson was 100% wrong here. no reason to intentionally throw at Thomas. he should have thrown at himself for giving up a HR to Eggs Benedict, LOL!
Imagine my surprise to see Terry “Tito” Francona in a Reds uniform. Tremendous baseball coach.
I have family in Boca Chica DR and we love Andres Thomas Perez.
Never saw this one. thanks!
I love this sport
This was the only time I watched baseball late 80s Braves here in Miami on TBS. I remember Lonnie Smith. Terry Pendleton Ron Gant Mark Lemke .Jeff Blauser Greg Olsen. Jeff Treadway Rafael Billiard. Otis Nixon Sid Bream. Andy Van Slyke ..Ken Griffey ..I even remember Zane Smith. He looked like Tom Cruise without a chin bone 🤣🤣🤣..Dale Murphy was bad these years seems he never delivered when they needed a clutch hit..Dale was a stud good looking man.
I was 8 years old that summer. One of the ONLY baseball games I remember was the Reds beating the Braves 21-6 a couple months after the game in this video.
2:20 Terry Francona with a crushing tackle on Ken Oberkfell.
Ah, the 80s, when these brawls happened all the time, a casual brawl in a casual 80s game highlight video.
Andres Thomas a heck of a basketball player in the Dominican republic but wasn't a good hitter to play in the big leagues for a long time. He was a good Fiedler..I remember him winning a game in Montreal with a Home run ..game wasn't televise..
Always liked the big letters the Reds used for the names on their backs. Especially when the players had long names. They never reduced the size of the letters to accommodate it. They just circled the name around. I thought it made the Reds look like intimidating assholes
Remember Paul Householder? His name barely could fit.
The late umpires John McSherry and Fred Brocklander also worked the famous Padres/Braves brawl game in 1984.
Same Fred Blocklander who in game 5 of the 1986 NLCS that robbed the Houston Astros(who were in the NL) of the score run who called Reynolds out at first when he was safe about a least ½ a step.
Jay Randolph,RIP & Joe Morgan, RIP with the call 4 NBC!
Jay Randolph is actually still alive. He's in his late 80's and lives here in the St. Louis area where he has lived and worked for years in addition to his national broadcasting duties back in the day with NBC. Tragically, he did lose one of his Sons, Jay Jr. to cancer about a year ago and I believe he lost another Son before that. Jay Sr. however is still with us. Just heard him on the radio recently offering remembrances after Whitey Herzog passed away.
I always liked Bill Gullickson ... fierce competitor 👌🏻
The announcer said Gullickson "really lost his cool"...that will happen when a guy charges towards you.
I remember seeing this game on tv.
I'm guessing this is Joe Morgan on commentary, but who's doing play by play?
John Hill Jay Randolph
OFFRD I think the score was 23 to 9
Joe Morgan, my least favorite commentator of all time.
There was a fight the next day because the Braves pitchers were told to hit Tracy Jones.
The Reds and Braves had a bawl the next day. Jim Acker hit Tracy Jones and it was on again!
This must of been right before the Braves traded Doyle Alexander to Detroit for John Smoltz. Who got the better end of that trade?
This was June Alexander was traded August 12th
Murphy was a strong dude. Yanked Gullickson out of the pile.
He was throwing at him no doubt
Pitcher reminds me of Eddie Harris from Major League😂😂😂😂
Pete Rose, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion in the brawl and Joe Morgan announcing
The Benedict home run was foul.
Five days later I was Born baby woooo what a slobberknocker!
One of the few times i saw a pitcher charge at the batter😂
Bill Gullickson was not a guy who you would want to bluff. Thomas took a few steps and Gullickson finished it.
Was that Doyle Alexander, the starter?
They both were east of the Mississippi but played in the nl west
This game was a week before I got married.

Late 80s Reds and Mets must have the MLB record for fights
Two teams filled with thugs that their fans adored. Dykstra, Backman, Darling, HoJo, Dibble, Charlton, Rose, The list goes on.
A pitcher charging the plate?
That was back in the Go Braves and take the Falcons with you era
Bob Diaz was the catcher of the Reds?
Bo diaz
Year of the juiced ball. Home runs went WAY up in '87.
Juiced players more like
That's the truth in melees... if you are ready to go... then do so. If you're not sure or hesitant than that reveals or reads to your target that you might be a bit intimidad by him or her.
Don Drysdale said that Gullickson made the mistake of coming off the mound. By staying on the mound, you have height and the player running up to you.
i am surprised NBC Sports televised this game. braves werent good then
Kavin Caruso This was one of NBC's Saturday doubleheaders. This was the early backup game, which explains Joe Morgan (and I think Jay Randolph) announcing.
Back then they would randomly choose any game to televise, rather than choose one that would get high ratings. Today it's all about ratings.
1987 braves spent a good half of the season in first place. Murphy should have won his third mvp with 44 homers that year. Andre Dawson had 47 on a last place cubs team.
The Reds began this game in first place, 3.5 games ahead of the Braves. NBC had every reason to televise it.
@@davidmata9952 you make it seem like having good ratings is a bad thing. Higher ratimgs means more viewers, so it's automatically what more people want to see
the launching pad!!!!
After 4 home runs by different players, the batter got hit by pitched ball and the bench clearing brawl erupted. Pitcher should be charged with a technical foul (like basketball) for throwing a ball at the batter instead of over the plate.
Doyle Alexander…traded to Detroit at the trade deadline for JOHN SMOLTZ. And the rest, as they say, is history. Bruce Benedict…now a college basketball referee. Does ACC and Southern Conference games.
Still refereeing? Geez. I remember him reffing high school games in Cobb County in the early 90s.
Bad trade in hindsight, but Alexander did what the Tigers hoped: he was lights out down the stretch and got the Tigers past the Jays to win the division.
gullickson was (and probably still is ) a punk
Reds and Braves brawl
New position, designated plunker. Sort like a hockey goon for baseball ⚾️
He gave up a home run, big deal, think of the Braves pitcher giving up 2 I think, he should have thrown at the third batters head to back him off.
The Reds resorting to thuggery as usual. It’s about the type players they attract and the attitude of the citizens of Cincinnati that worship them.
I don't know if it was this brawl or not, but I vividly remember Clarence Jones running into the melee and just falling like a fainting goat on the pile.
We had the game recorded and watched it repeatedly laughing our asses off. It was from this time period and a swear it was against the reds. I also remember Tracy Jones on the ground throwing punches.
Edit: I found it. It was against the Phillies in 1991. ruclips.net/video/9kyPEttT9J8/видео.html
Lol, good fight.
Cripple Fight!!!!
Trade ALEXANDER to DETROIT
The Reds have always been a pain in the crank. I hate the Reds.
oof ! the braves and pawpaw doyle stunk pretty bad during this time.
