I saw many of the greats perform live in concert in the 70's and 80's. Michael, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, U2, Bowie, Heart, Bryan Adams. All of their shows were spectacular. But my favorite all time live concert moment was George Benson playing "This Masqurade" at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. George and the band played the song down just like the record and when they were done the stage lights went down the spotlight hit George and his guitar and he proceeded to play the song again by himself using the craziest jazz block chords, scatting and guitar ad libs I have ever heard in my life. I could not believe what I was hearing!!! I remember looking at my girlfriend in shock I was so amazed at what I was hearing. I grew up listening to herbie, chick, weather report, etc... And my father was a well known tap dancer in 50's who performed with Duke, Basie and Nat King Cole and my Godfather is the late great Erroll Garner. So I had heard some amazing jazz musicians before that night I saw George. Hands down the best live concert moment I ever saw! 🎼🔥👍💥

Every second of this more precious than gold. The world is a much better place directly due to this footage. A thousand thanks are not enough. George is a God, and the bass solo was superb - I'm sure even George's secret weapon, the great Stanley Banks would agree.

Simply "AMAZING"-- George Benson is the best. What a musician and the band is killing it. I Love this song. I still have the long 45 version. On Broadway 🎶🎶🎵
It bums me out so much to see that George Benson sounds like George Benson on any guitar. I had been holding on to the hope that I would sound just as good if I only had his gear. Guess I’ll go practice. And cry.
At one point I thought my parents were rich and just hiding it from me to teach me how to relate to the common man. A comparable level of disappointment.
Been down that rabbit hole man. Bought and sold several guitars hoping, "this is the one." I'm fairly good, these guitars are as good as they come, but in no way can that combination even approach the virtuosity of George Benson. At times, I hav wanted to burn guitars, throw them in the river or smash them with a hammer. It's a false church! As so clearly demonstrated here, it took George maybe ten seconds to get his tone and get acclimated to this little overdrive shredder guitar, a guitar I would not even pick up, and tear the roof off the house with it. He has always been and always will be my single biggest influence, even though I can not play anything remotely like him. This video is yet again an inspiration, a call to get back and practice more today. Thanks as always George Benson. Truly the best ever.
I met george in 92 when he had a tour in argentina; he held a guitar clinic to a limited audience and I was there. I asked george about his picking technique, he said just play softly. well I have to say he is a very very very humble guy, I even took a photo and got his signature. It was just like a dream come true, as a jazz guitar student.
I think that after the gig, when I got home, I would take that white guitar, put it on a stand in the living room and just stare at it for the rest of the night trying to understand how George could find the music he played on it! Took him all of ten seconds to get his tone out of it. The band's guitarist strapped on a guitar but then just took it back off and spent the rest of the song just watching George. Can't say I blame the guy. I think of George Benson walked on stage when I was doing a gig, I probably wouldn't be able to play Mary Had a Little Lamb. This must have been such an honor.
Holy crap! George just jumps up there, grabs someone else's guitar, and shreds like he's possessed. T-A-L-E-N-T! And the bass player is good - love how he solos and impresses George enough to comment to his protege.
Damn, the man has always, always, always had the smoothest hands. He's like Roy Clark: impeccably talented and enjoys himself on stage so much, it's infectious. You can''t help but have a great time. Period.
Martin Fisher not according to Santana, it is Gabor Szabo who showed new ways of playing( jazz) guitar. GB is phenomenal I agree but, as also being a Hungarian myself, and them both having been friends at one time in the past and attending the same school I heard that GB took some tunes that was written by GSZ. I wonder if anybody has any comment or info about this...
Jeez, Even Genesis incorporated it in their "Lamb lies down on broadway", & it fits perfectly. Fantastic, Incredible, Wonderful, Amazing, Brilliant, double funk, a slice of jazz, triple cool. & just great.
It’s like he went back in time and grabbed his younger hungrier self .The first Jazz guitarist to cross over to the pop world .This post was like a fine wine .
When most people think of George Benson, they usually think of one or two of his hits (ie: Give Me The Night), but what they often overlook is just how talented he is. One of the “Greats” as guitar players, and so much more❗️
OMG... I have loved George Benson and his incredible style since I worked on one of his concerts at Central Michigan University back in the 1970's. The man was so nice, he even invited us all back to his dressing room for champagne after the concert. Total class and style!
Yes indeed......George Benson. A long long time ago George use to work for my uncle in the roofing business when George was just getting his start. The biscuit and gravy district of Downtown Pittsburgh. Ever since then, George Benson has been a household name in my family and my Grandfather always said that if you ever are in the presence of George...........you are in the presence of greatness...far beyond royality, you are in the presence of the right hand man of God. How true he was........................
I was just a boy when Benson's album "Breezin'" ruled the charts. I thought he was an amazing artist. After all of these years he had not lost that magic
@@willmurray222 Yeah I remember him as a damn good jazz guitarist from before he got into vocal stuff. Trouble is the playing took a back seat to the vocals latterly, but I guess it made him more money which, speaking as a musician, I can't blame him for doing. Nat King Cole went down that route too, as did Louis Armstrong. ;)
And a totally different style of guitar to boot, solid body rock guitar, thin line, different neck and profile to George's more traditional Gibson / Gretsch style larger hollow body, more acoustic in nature. Shows us his genius in being able to still sound like George - he could play a broom with 2 nails and a wire between... What a man! Thanks for huge upload.
JazzyZenBrotha, you posted exactly what I was going to post!!!!!! I'll add : His guitar playing is so extraordinary that it's easy to forget what an ultra fantastic vocalist George is as well.
IMPRESSIVE GEORGE PERFORMANCE...any other kind?? LUVED the BLUES guitar work pulling from his unlikely, and rich childhood BLUES music exposure and playing experiences. Bluesy jazz SCAT singing was...genuine-sounding and excellently phrased, synchopated, and pleasantly pitched and clearly articulated !!!
having been into george starting in the late 70's ,i consider myself extremely "blessed" to watch and hear george in this clip. we have been given a man's accumulated skill and maturity that he's acquired over the years . this for me is way richer and deeper than anything we got from the early george . what a precious historical document . it's just like old good wine . george and the boys caught the magic that night .pity the vid quality is so crap.but despite the poor vid quality we can still catch and feel the exceptional performance . i suspect george was front and centre for this and really tried hard for the guys that called him on stage because they honoured him so much .that's what made it way better than anything i've seen heard him do.he really put his whole heart into this plus a bit more for the guys .it was a personal thankyou from george to them because they were smart enough to recognise more than most people what he's capable of ..they made it hard for him and set the bar really high when they addressed him as THE GREAT GEORGE BENSON . but george jumped up and over with ease .and brought the GREATNESS with him
This.... with out any doubt is one of the most remarkable songs and performers that couldn't define America beyond something that is not definable. To me George defines everything that genius is capable of in America..................................
Aw, Jeff, you just HAD to lower the tone and spoil the vibe and drag us all down into the gutter and get the mood all dirty with that nasty, nasty flag stuff that sticks to the sole of your shoe and turns every damn thing into a great stinking mess of lebensraum and loathing and bitterness and hate and - What? Sorry, did I get a little carried away? Nationalism? Chauvinism? In this day and age? Gosh. Fancy that. It's a fine musical performance by one of the greats. That's quite sufficient.

@@stockstilloutdoor6111 - dude that is about the cleverest comment I have ever seen on social media. Brilliant! made me smile … txs
I went home, kicked my guitar off the stand and went back to the drums. What's the point? Haha
Holy Mother of God!!! George Benson Ladies and Gentleman! So glad he was born.
I like how he came in completely cold and started rippin' it right away, lol.
I am a big fan and I admire the fact that he has never said a curse word , what a genuine nice person!
George Benson with a fucking super strat guitar! wow he gets his jazzy sound from any guitar!!! its in his fingers!!!
There is no musician on this planet with more COOL than George. So friggin amazing.
Wah Wah Watson
I think that after the gig, when I got home, I would take that white guitar, put it on a stand in the living room and just stare at it for the rest of the night trying to understand how George could find the music he played on it! Took him all of ten seconds to get his tone out of it. The band's guitarist strapped on a guitar but then just took it back off and spent the rest of the song just watching George. Can't say I blame the guy. I think of George Benson walked on stage when I was doing a gig, I probably wouldn't be able to play Mary Had a Little Lamb. This must have been such an honor.
That was AWESOME❕❕❕
I've loved George Benson for 50+ years.
On Broadway is good but This Masquerade is my fav song. 😎👍👍
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Holy crap! George just jumps up there, grabs someone else's guitar, and shreds like he's possessed. T-A-L-E-N-T! And the bass player is good - love how he solos and impresses George enough to comment to his protege.
brotherjahluv exactly!
Yes indeed, !!!....Bassist makin' his presence known.
Yeah
Love Heart &Soul Artists.....
Send this to a reactionary. I've always loved this song, but this is above and beyond they're killing it. Any George Benson is top of the heap!
George Benson was sooo smooth. Love the Breezin record.
One of the most natural guitarists the world has ever seen...remember Billies Bounce???
George’s mum gave birth to a guitar and George just happened to be attached to it …never seen such a natural guitarist
Man was even his guitar and he rips it up. That's real talent. Ohhhh check out his great vocals too!!
Damn, the man has always, always, always had the smoothest hands. He's like Roy Clark: impeccably talented and enjoys himself on stage so much, it's infectious. You can''t help but have a great time. Period.
Funny you mention Roy Clark. Look up a session where they played together.
@@clarenceconwell6183...and where Roy does Dueling Banjos with Glen Campbell.
There is no argument George Benson is the greatest jazz blues guitar player that has ever lived
Wow..just wow! What a performer. 👌👌 "I can play this here guitar" Yes he can!
Jeez, Even Genesis incorporated it in their "Lamb lies down on broadway", & it fits perfectly. Fantastic, Incredible, Wonderful, Amazing, Brilliant, double funk, a slice of jazz, triple cool. & just great.
Some of the happiest moments of my life were spent listening to music like this with friends and family.
This is priceless.
It’s like he went back in time and grabbed his younger hungrier self .The first Jazz guitarist to cross over to the pop world .This post was like a fine wine .
The amount of cowbell is *just right*.
I'm pretty sure we're going to need more cowbell.
Helluva group of musicians.
I had a FEVER. But I got my prescription.
No fever!!
😂😂😂😂😂
When most people think of George Benson, they usually think of one or two of his hits (ie: Give Me The Night), but what they often overlook is just how talented he is. One of the “Greats” as guitar players, and so much more❗️
OMG... I have loved George Benson and his incredible style since I worked on one of his concerts at Central Michigan University back in the 1970's. The man was so nice, he even invited us all back to his dressing room for champagne after the concert. Total class and style!
How lucky would you be to have been in that audience, expecting to see one act, and then get GEORGE MF BENSON as a bonus???
Yes indeed......George Benson. A long long time ago George use to work for my uncle in the roofing business when George was just getting his start. The biscuit and gravy district of Downtown Pittsburgh. Ever since then, George Benson has been a household name in my family and my Grandfather always said that if you ever are in the presence of George...........you are in the presence of greatness...far beyond royality, you are in the presence of the right hand man of God. How true he was........................
Agreed. Never sell George short.
What a good thing man. You should all be proud, and I know you are. I'll send you a great big hug to all of you.
I had the opportunity to Mr. Benson in Concert in US Virgin Islands. Man I was blown away. The best jazz guitarist ever!
Mark Whitfield looks so incredibly happy and proud to see his mentor, teacher, and hero take the place by storm.
One of a kind, Super Great. You know who it is.
I was just a boy when Benson's album "Breezin'" ruled the charts. I thought he was an amazing artist. After all of these years he had not lost that magic
Mr.George is possibly 'the' most respected and respectable man in music, always the professional.
Arguably the greatest blues/jazz guitar player ever...Ever.
T Bone?
loved benson before he became famous and still do. greatest jazz guitar ever.
@@willmurray222 Yeah I remember him as a damn good jazz guitarist from before he got into vocal stuff. Trouble is the playing took a back seat to the vocals latterly, but I guess it made him more money which, speaking as a musician, I can't blame him for doing. Nat King Cole went down that route too, as did Louis Armstrong. ;)
I might disagree, and so might he. Wes Montgomery was his teacher...
GB is R&B Jazz Funk. Not Blues/Jazz.
Class personified, it really doesn't get much better than that folks...the man is a musical Legend.
All I can say is wow he never changes. Can you imagine being taught by George Benson???
A true Legend and Master!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are all still in awe of this man!!
This is why George Benson is the MAN!!! He came up on the spot and showed his talent on a guitar that isn't even his! He took it away!
This is what music is all about. Thank you George for this moment in the absolute zone that so few artists can reach.
thanks for being an inspiration.
George is one of the best ! That bass player was popping some great notes! Great combination of both. Unforgettable performance! Thank you
He’s first class musician
Every time I cross his name on my favorite song list!, mandatory listening time 👏🤌👍, d.whitley👋
This what happens when Gods touches someone and they find their calling. George Benson is the simply sensational. He's the best period.
dideal1 agree 🙌🏻🤝🤘🏻
somehow I just discovered this clip and am ...stupefied...this is magnificent stuff...
who needs a fuzz/distortion /overdrive when you can play blues licks that fast?
the overdrive comes handy when you're playing slow...
That ain't blues.
When your melodic and lyrical like George Benson you dont need to have effects.👍
nicholas peter gagg he’s not playing blues licks and it’s not about playing fast.
What a gift I just received!
having been into george starting in the late 70's ,i consider myself extremely "blessed" to watch and hear george in this clip. we have been given a man's accumulated skill and maturity that he's acquired over the years . this for me is way richer and deeper than anything we got from the early george . what a precious historical document . it's just like old good wine . george and the boys caught the magic that night .pity the vid quality is so crap.but despite the poor vid quality we can still catch and feel the exceptional performance .
i suspect george was front and centre for this and really tried hard for the guys that called him on stage because they honoured him so much .that's what made it way better than anything i've seen heard him do.he really put his whole heart into this plus a bit more for the guys .it was a personal thankyou from george to them because they were smart enough to recognise more than most people what he's capable of ..they made it hard for him and set the bar really high when they addressed him as THE GREAT GEORGE BENSON . but george jumped up and over with ease .and brought the GREATNESS with him
This is scary good. Told my sister this is about the only live version of a song I’ve ever liked better than the original song on a record.
a loaner guitar and a strange microphone .... and bammmm
one of our greatest stars
gaga could do that.
After all these years, I keep on coming to this version. Masterpiece! Also don' forget that the bass player killed it as well!
Love the bass tone absolutely the best of both world
Not enough thumbs up in the world for this one.
This is literally a "hold my beer" moment, and as usual George crushed it, and that bass player really came through. Great clip!
This.... with out any doubt is one of the most remarkable songs and performers that couldn't define America beyond something that is not definable. To me George defines everything that genius is capable of in America..................................
Aw, Jeff, you just HAD to lower the tone and spoil the vibe and drag us all down into the gutter and get the mood all dirty with that nasty, nasty flag stuff that sticks to the sole of your shoe and turns every damn thing into a great stinking mess of lebensraum and loathing and bitterness and hate and -
What? Sorry, did I get a little carried away? Nationalism? Chauvinism? In this day and age? Gosh. Fancy that.
It's a fine musical performance by one of the greats. That's quite sufficient.
O cara toca muitoooo olha o cara olhando prá ele surpreso e abismado com tanto talento imagine se ele tivesse com.a guitarra dele uauuuu
