Quick recommendation regarding irrigation. HDPE pipe--it comes in coils 300-400 feet long is a better solution for running irrigation main lines underground. It can handle freeze thaw cycles, so it won't crack if, or inevitably WHEN you forget or don't blow it out before winter. You can also simply drag it under ground rather than dig trenches. I took all of the shanks off of my chisel plow but one, attached the end of the coil with some 12 gauge fencing wire and a bolt and dragged the pipe behind me to each new irrigation box or connection point. You don't even have to replace the soil. Just drive your tractor or car over the slightly disturbed grass and you're done. I probably have a couple thousand feet of underground line on my farm and it took me very little time or money to install and it has lasted nearly 20 years with no damage. Good luck. My first thought was wind, it looks very exposed from that perspective. Bearing in mind I'm in Southern Tasmania and we get very strong winds here in late winter early spring making season extension difficult.

I've got a directorial suggestion. :) When you're filming a shot that shows both you and your talking partner, then either look at your talking partner AND/OR treat the camera as your talking partner.. But don't stare into the distance :) Feel free to react to the conversation towards the camera, or ask a question while you are looking at the camera. It will feel awkward while recording, but it will look quite natural in the final result. It's actually easy to do if you just remember not to stare in the distance.. That leaves you with two other options and both are good. :) Love your vids!
Very in-sync to my current situation.. Watching your videos, reading your book.. I'll be starting my first market garden this year as well. It'll be part time to start off, got 5 acres of arable land, of which I'm planning to develop 1/4 acre. Since I'm in the prairies, the land won't be workable for a while, there's still snow here. Gotta wait till mid April to start roto-tilling the pasture that it is now. Anyways, I just felt excited to share that.. it's pretty much all because of your content that it got me thinking of doing this. I'm glad to see young people actually excited about farming. It brings great joy to my heart and actually gives me hope for the American farmers. There is a lot to learn about farming and ranching and it can be very hard at times but the emotional rewards you get out of farming and ranching is like no other. Just one bit of advice too you. The people that work for you or the people that work "with you" are not staff members, they to are farmers or ranchers or in some cases they are hands but definitely not staff, you are not running a restaurant. Maybe some of the really big corporate spreads call their hands staff? but I'm not going to get into the corporate farm crap because that's what most of those operations are "Crap" ? Job title may seem like a very minuscule thing to bring up and talk about but it's not. It's very important to be on a equil playing field with all the other farmers. Paying attention to the little details is what separates good farmers from great farmers. I wish you all the best on your new farming indever. Take care. Hawk out !!
Question about animals, Rabbits, deer, anything else and the fight keeping them out from destroying the farms? Fencing, covering everything ?? What is ideal way to keep them out?
For a five year lease I would leave nothing fallow. I would rotate crops as need be, Fallow doesn't enter into the equation until year seven. What am I missing? EDIT: Rotation can include tilling under a crop every 3rd year when that crop involves more than one harvest per year.
Don't know much about farming but since you were talking about row spacing it makes me wonder. Do farmers not only alternate crops but also interleave the rows between crops? That is plant the next crop in the middle of where the walking path was before...

I was wondering if you have any idea how hot it gets in their during the summer months. My guess is that it'll get way to hot for down here and i'll just have to build a permanent structure on the leased land.

Ever think about hydroponic towers? You can make them wide and only 1 story tall if regulations are tight.
