I remember this well. I worked Master Control for KHQ in the late 80's. I use to run this sign-off every night. I showed it to my kids. They didn't know that TV stations use to turn off at night.
I love the sign-off messages and would rather see stations off-air for a few hours rather than populate their entire overnight block with infomercials. How extensive these sign-offs are vary from station to station but KHQ's was a bit more elaborate and even classy.
The film of "The Navy Hymn," as seen here prior to the sign-off, is the same one that was used for years on Los Angeles station KNBC Channel 4's sign-offs.
"This is KHQ-TV Channel 6 in Spokane, Washington, transmitng from Tower Mountain with the power of 87.1 kilowatts. KHQ-TV now leaves the air at the conclusion of another telecasting day. KHQ-TV is owned and operated by KHQ INC., an equal employment opportunities employer. We hope our programs have entertained and inform you and we invite you to join us again later this morning. Now, this is Ron Harris, speaking for the staff and management of KHQ Television Channel 6 Spokane, Washington, biding you a very pleasant good night and good morning."
I Think The KHQ Sign Off Message and Film before the SSB was recycled somewhere between Early 1980's (Before 1985/Before when they changed their logo because of 3:33).

Looked forward to seeing this every night I could stay up late. Very well made.
I miss the days before the 24 hrs news cycle. This sign off is one I remember fondly.

KNBC used a slightly different Navy Hymn clip. If you compared them side-by-side, you can see that KNBC's version has a different ending shot.
@@HogstuffYes, that one had a sunset with a zoom-out at the end. Kind of reminded me of a postcard.

@IkegamiHK312 The slide apperars just before the color bars appear, so I think that the "trouble incomming" is the color bars.
I found who the actor is before the sign off. That's William Sampson. He died a year after this sign off.
5:10 - 5:24 - That is one classy touch.
We need to bring them back!
@wmbrown6: Now that's bringing back some LA memories! There's loads of KABC sign-offs on here if you dig around a bit.
There are signoffs all over RUclips. Look up SignoffsGuy.
@Childist2 Most likely an automatic "trouble slide" from the cable company in case of signal loss.
KHQ was the 1st TV Station in Eastern Washington.First airdate:12/20/1952.
One station here in LA used the Navy Hymn. But not the video version used here.
I believe that KNBC used to use it
@@robatsea2009 yes, but the last part was not a sunset as seen from the back of the boat.
I remember this.
5:45 - The same font was used for "ORIGINATING U.S. STATION IS NOT TRANSMITTING".
Interesting "Trouble Incoming Please Stand By" bumper. Could anyone explain what it means?
Why does it say "Trouble Coming. Please Stand By" at the end?
Maybe that's their TD Screen...
Practicing for the Soviet missile attack?!
Film we see the end of here is "Relentless." You probably wouldn't find it anywhere online.
Joe Hammerschmidt The whole movie is on youtube

Who was singing the navy hymn in this video?
Anyone know the music playing at 1:33
One question, What was the movie or tv show playing before the sign off?
It's a made-for-television movie titled "Relentless", from 1977.
Thanks for the spooky logo.
The '85 sign-off was exactly as on here. But on this clip there's more meat with the potatoes.
3:53 who is she?
can I use the color bars at the end for a video? I will give you credit.
Sounds fine to me
cAN YOU UPLOAD THE 1985 SIGN OFF OF KHQ TV?
What is that movie at 0:00
Its Relentless from 1977.
3:36 So that's what goes on at sign-off. Interesting.
3:52 Reminds me of the punchline to an old joke: "Quit this job? What! And get out of show business?!"
5:44 trouble incoming
3:57
SCARY TV AD THEME FROM "TRIDENT"
HEHE (1:17)
ive come to the conclusion that whoever made those production company closing logos must have been very bored individuals
So it's pronounced Spo-Can, not Spo-Cane?
Yep! It's a shortened form of Spokan-ee, the Spokane Indians' name for my hometown.
@@zenpaganwarrior Spoke Ann: Wash
Correct
I've seen those KHQ sign-ons and they weren't as extensive as these sign-offs.
KHQ should stand for "Keeping High Quality".
5:50 BOOOOOOOP
3:57 🇺🇸
5:19 good night

KHQ-TV it was affliated by National Broadcasting Company (NBC) Until now. KHQ-TV 6 it's NBC Station for Spokane, Washington area.
NBC never left KHQ-TV.
Stayed with NBC for its entire life since its launch on 12/20/1952.Had no desire to change primary affiliates back in the day.@@jonathanstewart8777

Juicy Fruit
I find this sign-off creepy for some reason.
Actually, its because of 5:11-onward.
Wait till you see the Joanna Lopez sign off from 1989 WMAQ Channel 5
