  • This is the first video in a series where farmer and teamster Donn Hewes of Northland Sheep Dairy in Marathon, NY demonstrates how draft horses and mules are integrated into his farm operation. This video was filmed and edited by Peter Carroll of Peter Carroll Productions in Ithaca, NY and funded by the generous contributors to our Small Farm Videos Indiegogo campaign. This video resource is offered by the Cornell Small Farms Program.

It would be great if this farm had an internship program where people could come and learn. This makes me so happy to see people do this still. It's so fascinating for me to watch this. Thank you

I'm so glad someone realizes horses are more than racing for trophies with their 'best buddy'.
God gave us horses to help and be there for us. Horses are more than your friend, they're your family.

That's the truth. Fly masks added to the harnesses are on point too. Those Percherons are flawless.

Thank you so much for posting this. Well-done and inspiring video for those who are thinking of getting into this. I am from Alabama and remember farming with my grandfather on his Ford 8n. Our neighbor still farmed with mules and I was always amazed at how they worked. We are considering buying a small farm and working with draft animals.

I love watching a well-tuned team with a knowledgeable handler. We don't currently have any horses for work or pleasure, and since we're down to only 25 acres I don't know if we'll ever have them again. I really miss it, but teaching goats to pull small carts has taken my mind off missing the horses. Thanks for a great video!

The goats are fun to! I knew a goat referred to as "Smiley" (i think lol) and that crazy bastard would get his loooonng horns stuck in the fence when he was coming to eat but he was always there and always smiling😂 he was a crafty little mofo....

A horses' mood isn't just expressed by the ears. Look at their overall expression - these horses are 100% relaxed throughout the whole video. It's amazing and wonderful to watch.

Your animals are a credit to you. I hope the Suffolk Punch are prospering in the US as they are struggling as a UK breed, which is such a shame. We had a prison farm using them, but change of policy meant another nail in their coffin. A shame for the prisoners too. Are the mules a Percheron cross? They are HUGE.

How does one find tools like this. I’d be interested. I freaking hate the sound of an engine and I love animals. I also wanna grow my own grain and have a few alpacas for my own clothes and close family. I want a big mushroom farm and I would use hay for that too I don’t like buying stuff. Too much ambition ik but I got dreams. I don’t till my soil I think it’s a waste, but I need to run a roller crimper a drill or broadcast seeder and whatever else to harvest.

Wow, this is amazing, farming the old ways. Love your horses, gentle giants. So true what you say. Country side is absolutely gorgeous, what part of the US do you live? Is it green like that all the time? Do you get droughts? Last one we had lasted 10 years, place was dust bowl, every thing was dead. Sun was a red/orange colour like we was on Mars. Couldn't water your lawn, wash your vehicle, everyone under tight water restrictions. Happens all the time here. Many farmer's have given up or committed suicide, some have killed their wives & children. Very sad. Government here only care about China. Thankyou for sharing. 🖐🇦🇺

Donn, were you raised on a farm working with horses when you were growing up to learn the skills necessary to farm with them. I am sure there is a long learning curve on how to plow, disk, and cut hay with horses in addition to harnessing them correctly . In this machine ate who manufactures all the leather harness, bridles and equipment that is designed for horses to pull. I would think it would take several skilled people to take care of the sheep, horses and multitude of other chores to be successful as you are farming.
