  • It's been sort of a rough start with a danger scare and trying to get the Jeep situated while also traveling. However, that hasn't stopped me from enjoying some of the Oregon coast and exploring down quiet forest roads!

    Hey Loui,
    Thanks for the shout-out about the platform. You did an amazing job with it!!!
    The extra spaces cut out of the legs also makes the platform lighter in weight. Every bit of weight savings along the way helps.
    Enjoy your travels.
    Cheers.

    Im a Van dweller. If mice are getting under your hood or in your rig use peppermint oil. I put peppermint oil down every night. You can put a good amount on some cotton balls and put it under the hood and take it out in the morning. You can also would put cotton balls down by your tires

    Just some advice, always be prepared to defend yourself. I recommend getting your cwp and a side arm
    2. Open your hood at night. It prevents rodents and other things from messing up your electrical.

    Some one told me that newer vehicles, the insulation on the wires is made from a vegetable based oil that rodents love to chew on,I can't confirm this but I would definitely get some plasti-dip spray and put a few coates over those wires asap

      A squirrel ate the wires on a coworkers vehicle. I think peppermint oil is a deterrent (the smell).

    I’m very happy that I discovered your channel a few days ago. You are a breath of fresh air. As I person who is trained in survival and self defense, always listen to your gut. If it doesn’t feel right there is something wrong. I traveled in the area you are in 30 years ago in my Jeep with my dog. The only difference is your Jeep is way nicer and I carried a gun. Something to consider? Sending you love and respect.

      Oh wow! So cool to follow in your footsteps! I’m really not sure about the whole gun thing. For me, I have to be ready and in the mindset that it could potentially be fatal. I think I’d need A LOT of training to feel comfortable carrying one first. I’m looking into no lethal protection tho

      @@AdventureTimeLoui same here, buy and gun school, it will be ok, and always put it in a safe, you are not sure about the gun thing, but rest and assure when the time comes to use the gun, that's when you will said, wow, I have one

    You'll get used to bumps in the night. If it's a bear or something, you'll DEFINATELY know it. We were exactly the same way at one point, "Oh My God! It was just A MOUSE!!" We call ourselves "Adventurers" as well ... explorers.... but one thing we do when getting onto the dirt for an extended period of time, is air our tires down.... that's a beauty spot.

  • @carolroyall

    That mouse woke you up for a reason. It was still odd that a car was coming up as you were leaving. Always trust your gut!
    It's not embarrassing. Why would it be embarrassing to err on the side of caution? Also, who cares what other people think?!

    I'm also soloing in my jeep. Been back and forth across USA 4X now. My 3:00 AM adventure was a mountain lion getting a closer look. I felt like a meatball on a plater for him in my roof tent with no weapon. Sooooo now have a gun companion. Also, pro tip if solo... You can string a hammock diagonally across the interior of your jeep by latching a carabiner to the passenger side front roof latch hook, and the other side to the back of roll cage. Works so well I punted my roof tent and don't need a platform either. Is fantastic too because you only need to park level front to back and can be pretty wonky side to side and the hammock just levels itself out.

    I like where you are going w/ your DIY platform. Some simple hinges and backstops to openings can give you all the easy access you are striving for. Critters are a serious issue for your wiring - so don't take that lightly as you could get stuck out in the wilds due to a wiring issue. Amazon sells a super Mint spray, etc. Just spray on the underside, wheel well, and/or where they would access your engine bay and electronics because if you saturate everything - then it will stink up your entire rig so you can't stand it either. I also read keeping the hood open helps so no heat gets trapped inside, i.e., if the engine bay is colder than outside - makes the vehicle less attracted. The theory sounds good, but not sure about the practice - maybe when you stop -open the hood so all the heat escapes your vehicle and close when you bed down. Good luck!

    • @sandp.7472
      @sandp.7472 2 года назад +2

      I use mint extract too. I have a spray bottle and I dilute it with water. Every night I spray everything, engine, tires and undercarriage making sure to coat brake lines and wires. I also open my hood and let the engine cool and look things over every morning. I was also skeptical about this being effective, but it seems to work. I dont notice the smell. This can be difficult but I am am very careful about keeping food well sealed and I dont eat in my Jeep. Another thing, if I hear something crawling around I hit the panic button on the key fob. Since mice seem to love the engine compartment, the noise sends them running.
      DuckNinja is correct, rodents can do serious damage and they seem to be able to find a vehicle incredibly fast. They are high on my worry list when I camp. I read some wire coatings are made with a soy product which rodents like to eat. Not sure if thats true.

    You might use a zip lock bag and mothballs. Place the bag in a safe place where the mice keep trying to build a home. A neighbor showed me this trick when we were building a house near St. Helen's. It worked pretty well.

    I was watching another influencer, and they said if you sleep with your hood up and exposed, as well as sit something with a little mint oil or Irish spring soap in it it will help keep the rodents away. They like the hood closed for the warmth, and they despise the smell of mint oil and Irish spring soap. They also do not like mothballs. However, traveling with the smell of mothballs in such a small space would be difficult. Safe travels.❤️

    You can put mint oil soaked moth balls around your jeep when you park. I have seen videos on RUclips on how and what mint oil to use. Look it up and that should help with the mice because from what I hear they can do some damage under your hood if they hang around there too long or bring in their friends. lol

  • @samanthaheath8664
    @samanthaheath8664 2 года назад

    I saw a Van life video on RUclips we're she put down moff balls around her vehicle to keep the mice out. And she says she bought them at Dollar Tree and the little netting material to put them in so that she can pick them up and reuse them. And you get a little Sell container to keep them in when you are driving and when you Get to your destination you put them back out around you vehicle and under the hood.

    1. Put a rodent Gard around jeep. Just stale a 2 ft tall aluminum board around it. Aluminum sign board is cheap and colorful.
    Spray board with peppermint sprits or popouri they hate her smell of that. Just make sure nothing else around that lives the smell of that.
