In those days the great Ohio State Fair was really a big event, so much bigger than it is in recent years. I think it peaked in the Governor Celeste years of the mid and late 1980s. It has been shrinking nearly every year for the past 30 years I'd say. I wasn't lucky enough to be there as far back as this video, but I do remember being there in the 80's and how big it was then. I think the trend of shrinking every year was finally stopped sometime around 2015 or so, and it's at least been stable if not even growing a little bit since (through 2019 anyway). I hope somehow I can see it return to something closer to its glory days!
Since my initial comment above, I returned to the OSF in 2022. Wow, it had really shrunk. The pause in shrinkage from 2015 to 19 certainly wasn't maintained after the two year closure of 2020 & 21. 2019 to 22 was the biggest contraction I've ever seen there over such a brief period. Very disappointing... I kept thinking, what a shame that the young people there would never know how great that fair was, all they'll ever know is the shell it is now.
I remember 3 things from the fair in the 70s. Custom t-shirts, posters and an assortment of weed paraphernalia. LOL Nah jk, I grew up in Columbus so it was an every year deal for us. Lots of memories.
Why does the description of this video begin "This film reel is of the 1939 Ohio State Fair"? I first guessed typo, but you can't fat-finger 74 into 39, the keys aren't even close. Clearly this video is not from 1939.
The fair used to be a do not miss event. We’d ride the bus down from the east side, great times. You couldn’t pay me to go anymore, sad.
1:25 "right on, right on, right on".
