    Acceleration is key for the Mako, they reach top speeds insanely quickly. Watched a documentary where a boat dragged a piece of fish meat (with a camera on the line) and a small mako would bite a chunk, disappear as the boat sped off, then boom eat another chunk as the boat is speeding with the bait

    One fish that I am very curious about, a kind of fish seldom mentioned, I would think never kept in even institutional aquariums, and yet quite fast and spectacularly interesting... is the Flying fish. The only recent reference to the Flying fish I can remember was in the movie "The Life of Pi". How fast can they swim before they leave the water and fly? How far can they "fly"? Do they fly, or just glide? How many species are there, and in which oceans do they live? I think it might be possible to do an entire video just on this species. Good luck from Arizona.

    • @boarbot7829
      @boarbot7829 3 года назад +3

      They just glide.

    • @fisherman7834
      @fisherman7834 3 года назад +1

      they are quite fast although and inconclusive amount of studies have been done on them to identify their speed
      there are two commonly referred to species, of which the four winged flying fish flies the farthest. They are extremely smart and can control their flight and leap out of the water in a direction in which the wind will help them glide. They can glide for hundreds of meters with a good wind and jumping from the peak wavelength of a wave. They use their wings to make sure they fly close to the surface of the water so that they are at lesser risk of predation by seabirds.
      They do not have any propulsion in the air however only the momentum prior to the exit of water and the wind. Most pelagic fish eat them.

He had been fighting for hours when the fish a think leapt up impaling itself in the catcher's mouth.The guy lived, and I think it shocked me so in that it didn't hit his spine or artery. Barracudashould be on this list.. Mako are amazingly fast and have been made to shase bait behind a boat doing 55 MPH sustained speed and the Mako caught up to the bait. So it mus t be able to follow at 50 mph and catch up to the boat going faster than that in short bursts, which is what they observed. they used an underwater video camera to record these findings a few years ago.

    Having owned Thoroughbred horses and members of the greyhound family, I think your speeds are somewhat skewed here, my Scottish deerhound Kai could accelerate to 60 in less time than most cars could, causing him to terrify and overtake our local postie! I think the speeds are relative, a greyhound can accelerate very quickly so can beat a horse over a short race but horses can keep it up longer so it very much depends on the length of race.
