My customer John just bought a Mini Mate camper so after Lucy the pooch waddles out of the way, we're going to install a hitch on his 2012 Electra Glide Ultra.
I like to use a flat jack to stand the bike upright if it doesn't have a centerstand. That makes the hitch easier to install. It's convenient but not a necessity.
So here's the hitch. This is a solid, triple-plated show chrome receiver hitch well made in the USA. You can see the quality of manufactures in the welds and the chrome. This is a beautiful piece and it comes with everything you need including the tow bar and a 1 7/8" ball.
It also has safety chain brackets. It's best to install these before you put the hitch on the bike because they're hard to get to when the hitch is in place.
So let's get started here. First we're going to remove the saddlebags from each side and then we're going to take off those chrome bars around the bottom of the saddlebags. There's a T-40 Torx bolt in the back and a 3/16 Allen up front. Those are simple to take off. I just put the hardware back in the rails to keep everything straight.
Now I'm going to take the front saddlebag clip and the seat strap off. I'm going to take this one Allen bolt out and the chrome strut covers will come right off. Now you can see the three bolts or the points where we're going to attach the hitch.
Okay, taking the left side off here now and I'm removing those bolts that held the TourPak in place. As you can see I've got John in this case, he's holding on to the TourPak. And watch it (the TourPak), it sets right on that black frame. As long as you've got somebody holding it, it moves no more than a eight of an inch. So when you get this hitch popped up into place, all you need to do is work the bolts just a little bit to get one started.
Yeah, that front one's out of line a little. I can't get that one, maybe I can get the back one going. As soon as you get one of those started then everything else just falls into place. This is a super easy hitch to install. Now I'm going to put in both of the bolts on the left side.
If you're wondering (how long this installation really takes), I mean, yeah, I edited this video down to just a few minutes. Somebody who's done and install like this a few times can probably put this hitch on in about an hour. If you've never done it before, give yourself a couple of hours.
Once you're done here, as you can see, it's a really nice looking piece. At this point, we're going to start reinstalling stuff.
One thing I will tell you to do - you've got this one bolt, you get a replacement bolt for the chrome strut cover. I would recommend before you tighten down all the bolts on the TourPak to install that bolt because you're going to need to lift up on that TourPak just a touch to get the hole lined up for that strut cover bolt. And once you put that in all the way, tighten down on those bolts on the TourPak.
The strut covers are back on, the seat strap is back on and now the saddlebags are back on. I will pop the receiver in place. The towbar with the 1 7/8" chrome ball, and that's it.
That's a good looking hitch and it's strong, too.
