A beautiful Top 12 young ladies this year!! Judi Anderson Miss Hawaii was a beautiful choice for Miss USA 1978. I’m just surprised she didn’t win Miss Universe. Charming, witty , intelligent and very pretty. Great combo pack💐😊

Judi Anderson did deserve to win in this competitive year. A lot of comments below express not understanding why she didn't win Miss Universe. I distinctly remember watching that year and wondering why that pasty teenager from South Africa kept advancing, despite her height, calm confidence and good stage presence. I was convinced Judi was going to beat her. Then came the final question, which was something like, "Miss USA, what is the best thing about your country", and Judi gave a very short answer that was essentially, "The beaches!" I remember thinking that that was not a winning answer. I still didn't want South Africa to win, but I honestly believe Judi lost it right there.
Hands down one of the very best, most competitive years. Virtually every semifinalist would’ve made for a terrific Miss USA but in the end the last two standing were truly the top two.

Not sure how Miss Texas didn't win. What a naturally beautiful girl. But no doubt that Miss Hawaii was stunning, and Miss Massachusetts was very sweet. Tough year
When the show was an espectacular production, not like today's show, with fake girls, and some big screen in the back, thas all, today's miss usa is a boring show.
Clearly, this was in the days when the final question really didn’t matter..Hawaii and Massachusetts had the two worst answers and finished first and second. Personally, I thought New Mexico was simply gorgeous. But Hawaii was 1st RU at MU so I guess they made the right call. I don’t know why pale Miss Indiana was even in the Top 5.
I thought Hawaii's answer -- "I would go home" was straightforward, as was Masachusett's -- "my grandmother". But I think it's best when they all answer the same question
Judi could not get Hawaii off her mind. She mentioned HA in her interview and FQ at MUSA and in her final answer at MU, which is what blew her chance of winning MU.
Weird that the current Miss Universe back then Janelle Commisiong from Trinidad Tobago the very first black M.U. was not present in Charleston, South Carolina that year, aside that no black delegates made it to the top 12, all were white girls, I don't know, raises eyebrows... hmm
Today all the queens are black, miss teen, miss USA etimes, miss world, mis Grand etc... I think, someone want to impose that idea. Is not bad, but is not good. Sorry.
Do they have to cry? She is a friend of mine and she told me she was in shock and at 18 (going on 19, made her one of the youngest contestants to win the title), she turned to Bob, and didn’t know what to do. She deserved the crown; she is not fake.
Miss Hawaii is probably one of the most beautiful Miss USA of all times!

I think she said she needed to work on patience, which seemed to contradict the narration of her as "patient"...
IMO, MA won interview, HA won SS, and TX won EG.
