I noticed Terri Utley was there helping with the crowning. Terri was Miss USA 1982 and raised the bar so high that until Brooke Lee won in 1997 there was no one better than Terri Utley because she exemplified class, integrity as well as beauty. Mai Shanley was ok but not "wow". None of the contestants this year equaled what Terri Utley or what Brooke Lee would do years later.
The winner also represented New Mexico in the 1983 Miss America Pageant (the one where Vanessa Williams won). She did not place Top 10. 1st runner-up was also Miss WV in earlier Miss America Pageant. She also did not place Top 10.
In retrospect, Miss West Virginia should've won. Miss New Mexico, during Miss Universe, was over-confident and smug and even through she made the top 10, she finished in 10th place overall. Miss West Virginia would've made the top 5 at Miss Universe.
Bob was on his waning years of hosting the MsU & MsUSA Pageants as per his 20-yr contract since 1967 but it was rude of him to mention to Ms Missouri “Don’t correct the emcee”. He was even rude to some of the girls in the past in both the MsU & MsUSA during his interview with the Semi-Finalists. The best emcees to handle the MsU & Ms USA pageants JMHO would be Dick Clark (RIP) & Bob Goen. These 2 gentlemen are a class act by themselves which unfortunately I can’t say the same with Bob Barker.

West Virginia was strikingly beautiful and it was clearly evident that if looks played into this, WV had a mile wide advantage. I think it was clear in 1984 that the minute NM won, this instantly eliminated USA's chances of winning Miss Universe that year. Miss USA was generously awarded a semi finalist position that year at Miss Universe but she finished well down. Wish these pageants would just give it to the prettiest girl for God's sake. And for you to insultingly call Mai Shanley "not bad looking" proves that you are one of those ignorant (and frankly, racist) people who idealize the typical white, blonde girl over the stunning beauty of a mixed race woman. Both can be just as beautiful as each other. USA had just won Miss Universe 3-4 years before - a young Hedy Lemarr could've been Miss USA this year - ain't no way they were going to award Miss USA the crown of Miss Universe that year. I've been watching the Miss U.S.A. pageant since 1976 when Miss Minnesota Barbara Petersen won, I know there are varied differences of opinion but to me I will never understand why Miss New Mexico Mai Shanley won, she even did terrible at the 1984 Miss Universe pageant where Ivonne Ryding of Sweden won, just watch how rehearsed she looked during the interview competition, she memorized all she said instead of being natural wich is a key factor to win over the judges. Miss NM was the wrong choice
