Yes, he is right up there. Mark Waugh too. However, the top most elegance mixed with excitement was by far Mohammad Azharuddin! That guy was something else even in ‘angry mode’, the way he would step out and dispatch spinners. 😮😊

I would suggest that Gary Sobers was as elegant a left handed batsman as anyone, he averaged over 58 runs/test innings, who could also produce 3 types of bowling, fast, swing and spin, he was also a quite brilliant fielder and not a bad captain either.

    2:03 "Gower playing shots already"
You can tell it's a different era. At the first scoring shot we see in this video, the score is 172/3. By the time Gower is playing shots "already", the score is 228/3, so the commentator's saying that it's unusual to be playing shots when the partnership is a mere 56.

LOL, just watched the corresponding Mike Atherton video from the same innings. Gower called him through for a suicidal single when Atherton was on 95 and Atherton was run out by a good foot, but the umpire didn't give it. No third umpire in those days.

Amazing to think that it was only a year or so after this that Gooch called time on his test career. Gooch was a great captain and batsman but i’ve never forgiven him for this. Gower scored 850 odd runs in his last 3 series at an average of 50 plus! Gooch had a problem with Gower, nothing to do with form or ability.
