Never tell an officer thank you unless they actually help you. I drove for about 10 years and have met some that will actually help you but are far and few between. Also know that there is no law that says you have to assist any officer during a dot inspection. So by telling an officer thank you is basically saying, thank you for letting me assist you in charging me with a crime and imposing a fine that I must pay out of pocket... thank you so much. I know that wasn't what was going through your mind at the time but that is what really happened. I also served in the navy and volunteered to become an auxiliary ma. So I can tell you for a fact that this officer didn't care one iota about you or how nice you were to him. As an officer you enforce by discretion. That officer , if he had any dignity, could have said "you know what, you are only 60lbs off and I can tell you genuinely didn't do it maliciously so just make sure you stop some where and toss out those blankets. Have a nice day" that's office discretion. And a side note he was blatantly mocking you when he asked if you knew anyone around or if you had 60lbs you could remove. He didn't care. He already cited you.

I had a DOT inspection on my rig and trailer, they had 3 guys doing a full inspection nose to tail, under the trailer and truck on a rolling board, under the hood, in my ELD, everything and they could not find any issue to get me on, well they did find something, They found where one of my airlines was touching another line and it was rubbing a little and the hose had a little rubbing mark on it where it was touching the other hose, you could hardly even feel any indentation, just a little discolored, so they wrote me up on that. That is all they could find but they had to get me on something I guess.

I used to haul road salt in the dead of winter. From kansas to south dakota , by the time I unloaded if it was freezing rain or blizzard, I would pick up 5-7,000 lbs. Luckily there were no scales on the routes I needed to take, they will nail you hard when they get in the mood for picking up ice along the way. Weight is weight. You would be lucky if they let you knock it all off with a hammer in the parking lot and weigh again. I was lucky and only ever heard stories. But man the ice adds up quick, especially pulling a hopper with low traps.
If ever I go back to doing that run, I'm bringing an air hammer. Clearing ice for an empty weigh before loading sucks, especially when the scale operator won't let you go with the payload you could haul if conditions were dry. Hauling grains and fertilizer in the winter wasn't as bad though, most places weighed the product only. In that case you hoped the portable scales weren't out and about and you only knocked off the ice if the fuel mileage started to suffer.

  • @dontwanta

I jammed the brakes after driving forward. I’m now 500 over on the steer and the back axle is legal.
He couldn’t understand how that happened. I explained that asphalt is just hot greasy rocks that move around in the truck till you dump it in the shaker box and they spread it and it cools from 400 degrees F to room temperature.

Trucking companies couldn't be happy with non-CDL hot shot carriers like you. They want the business, so they complain to the people they pay large sums of money to. Expect to be inspected frequently and weighed any time they see you with a good, heavy load. It's just the nature of the world. Trucking companies want your costs to increase so they can compete with you for those smaller loads.

Heres the deal...If your load is close to your limit, head to the nearest Cat Scale to get weighed before you head out.
This was an oversight on your part.

Gotta love WSP. I live straight across the river from that scale. The staters are always plucking truckers and cars from there. At least you got a charismatic stater. Most of them treat you like crap even if you’re sincere and cordial.
