Benevolent aliens from the planet Emerald send superhero Starman to protect Earth from invasion by an evil alien race called the Spherions. When Starman arrives on Earth, he discovers a conspiracy involving Earth's top scientists, and he must root out the traitors and also stop the impending alien invasion.

this is a great movie....every element of the modern sci-fi superthero movie is here.....the special effects are very good, the dialog is excellent and not cutesy...the acting is dignified and serious and the supporting actors show emotion well
the humor is good too, very understated and without crudity or salacious bits which is nice....the narrator does a good job....the narrator relieves starman from speaking when he flies through space.
i liked the spaceships also, they were ergonomic with easy to read analog guages and didn't look like the inside of concert halls with vast open spaces and high ceilings like many modern movie spaceships......these were more like submarines, no wasted space or silly gadgets or huge screens
and the story was good, it was basic but remember this was 65 years ago.
the japanese were very very good at monster and sci-fi movies even back then.

LOVE the classic Japanese sci-fi movies, watched them all the time on Saturday mornings as a kid! Many moons and galaxies ago lol!

I didn't know that till now. Rest in peace Ken, God this guy was great! He was all over late night TV, Chiller Theater in the 60's. His "Starman" Movies (serials) are classics and one of a kind. Ken was a serious classical actor and they said he hated the role and never talked about it. He was in one of the longest fight scenes ever filmed; he could wear out Bruce Lee.
bird zene I know what you mean, I seem to have little appetite for newer movies. I guess my age is showing, or maybe I have a different/deeper appreciation for the craft. The Starman stuff was so interesting, maybe it was because they were so outrageous!

I find the fight scenes to be a bit protracted, but other than that minor gripe, it is an exciting film with impressive production values.

This honestly looks more like a Flash Gordon movie, with the costume designs and the sci fi production design.

Usually the American remakes of Japanese horror and sci fi flicks are a disappointment (current example - whitewashed Ghost in the Shell), but Jeff Bridges' portrayal of Starman (arguably also whitewashing) was just a bit more nuanced than Utsui's.
I do not know why they have to remake them either. The originals are a class act that they really cannot follow today.
Jeff Bridges Starman was NOT a remake of the Japanese Starman (aka Supergiant). Totally girly man compared to the real deal!!!
Outside of Twilight and Pearl Harbor this is the dumbest show I've ever watched. But unlike TL and PH, I enjoyed it. Long live Starman!
