Lol, but I'm all for rocking the 12MP and having *super* fast continuous shooting frame rates and write speeds, and don't overlook that lower MP count allows for much larger pixels on the sensor, and the associated low light advantages that come with it. Unfortunately, Sony phones aren’t sold in Canada, and importing one is way too expensive for me. 🥺
@@SomeGadgetGuy But the Sony is soo nice…😍 Seriously though, I don’t need to upgrade often. I’m not a power user, nor do I need the latest and greatest year after year. Hello Juan! Im considering getting either the Pro-i or the 1IV at the moment. Assuming them to be comparable in price, which do u think is a better buy if I mainly use it for stills and relatively long workdays?
Don't mind the megapickles, but I do wish they'd made the sensor a wee bit bigger (physically) for more light gathering. That said, those are still pretty big pixels compared to most flagship 50 MPs... and hardly anyone else does 4k120 tele, so that's still a big, big plus! Can't wait to see how the cameras do with final software build.
Bro, I've been following & watching your videos for ages. Top Notch quality reviews & insights 👌 You should have millions of subscribers !!!! For real !!!! Watching on my Xperia 5 Mark 3, considering getting the Xperia 1 Mark 4 now in 2024, they are an absolute bargain for around 200-300 US Dollars !! I'll decide after I watch a review on the 1 Mark 5 😅 Keep up the good work 👍
Juan, awesome review, loving your style. I've been waiting for the XPERIA 1 IV but I still cant decide between that and the S22 Ultra. If it wasn't for the fact us in the UK we get palmed off with the Exynos 2200 I think I'd go Samsung. But the XPERIA 1 IV looks so slick and refined.
it was over 5 years ago when I first saw periscope zoom tech in the Asus zenfone zoom. Seemed like a no brainer that it would be the future of telephoto just like how LG G5 ushered in the era of wide angle cameras on phones. It's kind of strange the periscope zoom today isn't more widespread, nice to see Sony is going with it.
17:06 - You are absolutely right and I'm glad you're completely transparent about this. This phone now seems to be targeted to an even smaller niche of consumers which I don't think I fall under. Looking forward to seeing what their 5 mark iv and 10 mark iv look like (and hoping they have proper US band compatibility)
I rarely have a problem with higher prices on consumer electronics, I think it just requires a more careful consideration of WHO might be the right fit for a specific gadget. When this is legit capable of things that no Samsung or iPhone can achieve, and comes with one of the highest tiers of storage WHILE still supporting memory cards and headphones, it's the price we pay for a PRO pro phone.
@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah Sometimes all we need is a specific checklist and if we have to pay to get it we will. If the phone does what we need it to do flawlessly then every dollar will be justified.
Really good set of information compared to the few I watched prior. None of them mentioned the music feature and that's just one of several examples, but also fair, since you couldn't demo it yet.
Great preview. Sony have come a long way since the original Xperia 1. They are doing incremental updates where they are needed. The fact that all the imaging sensors are Exmor RS types means fast readout which is great for photography and videos. The question is would Sony dare incorporate their audio technology from their Walkman series in future Xperia models? Glad that Sony is sticking with the headphone jack, micro SD expandability, and no punch hole in the screen. This would be a nice upgrade from my Xperia 5ii (although the 5ii is still working very well). Are Sony still sticking with 2 years of updates or has that now been increased?
@@SomeGadgetGuy I think only when Sony finally decide to properly target the audiophile crowd will be see an Xperia with audio on par with their high end Walkmans. Having said that my Xperia 5ii sounds great with FLAC files. I don't own any of the high impedance headphones. The Xperia cameras/sensors have got better with each iteration. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before more attention is paid to audio. I just dread how much such a phone would cost.
I don't know if they borrowed technology from their walkmans but the output is incredibly clean with my IEMs. For my use less power but with less background noise is preferable to more output and more noise. It seems that that's what Sony engineers thought too
Next thing I'm waiting from Sony is some sort of R version of their flagship, as they do with their Alpha cameras. I think this will complement what they're already greatly achieving. We'll just have to choose between what we want then.
@@Sabundy Sony with their Alpha 7 cameras for example, has a normal 7, an S and an R version. The standard 7 does most of things well, and then there are the other 2. The S stands for "sensitivity" if I'm correct and it's the one with the lowest resolution. On a big sensor it makes each pixel bigger. The R on the other hand is for "Resolution" (again I'm not 100% sure about that) and it's the highest MP count from the Alpha 7 range
Nice review. Sony keeps at least for my point of view the necessary hardware. So which one to pick 5 III, 1 IV, or pro 1? What do you think for a video/photography purpose? Thanks
im not sure, i mean iphone have extrem good stabilization + ProRes in 4k and that give extrem much data from the sensor. It have a good night mode in photo... well the tele is the only thing but how much do you really need a tele ? i use more the nightmode
I was just eyeing the 1III, and was in the market for a new phone as my G8X wears down. This seems like my greatest option, unless a 5IV with Wireless charging comes around.
@@michael_c2 yeah, but I've had buggy software issues on my G8X, and wouldn't take that chance again on a phone with no more updates. You are right though, it is a great option
I was watching TechOdyssey's video on the Xperia 1 IV, and it seems to have a very bad overheating problem that many first hand reviewers never really talked about in depth. Could you test the overheating more throughly especially when shooting 4K 120?
A very sophisticated device. It's great to see what they're doing. I've learned that as much as I like the hardware I never use the specialized or should I say the more pro features. I'm looking forward to someone doing an _almost_ tutorial on this device.
For photograph, they need a real Xeon flash ,variable F stop , filter fitting lens, yes a bigger useable sensor which can go along with a good range zoom 70-180mm !
This is the only kind of smartphone I truly salivate over. I mean I'm not even using anything remotely like it and may never choose to, because my phone only really needs to be a good communicator with the ability to do social media and nice automatic snapshots. That's why I moved from an LG V20 to a Pixel 3XL to a Pixel 5. But boy does this kind of pro device with such targeted hardware really make me wish I was doing a job that would benefit from its unique strengths.
I love Sony phones and I love it's style but I only have one problem I can't find it in Africa. How can I be able to get hands on it? Or any Sony phone including the Xperia 1 iii
Hey Juan, great video. On the photography side of things, I wish we can have, let's say, a dedicated 50mm lens on the Mark V. The leap from 24mm to 85mm feels a bit much, in my humble opinion. There has to be a middle ground focal length to fill in the blanks, so to speak. What if I don't want to shoot wide, but don't want to zoom in, either, and I want a perspective close to what my eyes saw? And no, I don't want to settle for digital zoom and sacrifice image quality in the process. Just my humble thoughts.
They do have multiple storage phones. For example here in the UK we get shafted, the phone will only have 256gb internal memory but cost more than other countries pay for the 512gb device.
What a beauty, screen is still 4k but with high refresh rate wow. It's claim 3yrs of battery life, that's true based on my experience with my xz premium, it took 4yrs to bloat the battery and just 3 days ago I replaced the battery by myself. Sony forever ♥
I know this has nothing to do with LG but I know how much you love the V60 and wanted to know if you are having any issues after the update to android 12. I am currently using the t-mobile version of the V60, and since the OTA got to my unit I've been having software issues throughout the UI. Camera freezes, keyboard does not load, android auto disconnects constantly, slow response UI, and a bunch of other bugs that are driving me crazy. Is there anybody having the same issues after the 12 OTA t-mobile update?
Some questions: *Does it support active stylus? *Can one enable pass through charging automatically for certain apps, like using GPS? *Does it support all the 5G technologies/WiFi 6e? *Is it a hybrid dual sim? *Which HDR playback (if any) does it support?
No active pen support I can find. You can add other apps as "games", but not all apps. I can't add camera apps for example. My unit was a prototype, so I can't comment on radio bands and carrier support, but it was a champ on my WiFi6 router.
My favorite smartphone manufacturer I can never afford. The only Xperia I was able to get is Xperia ST21i back in 2012. I just love their design when it comes to smartphones. Classy without flashy gimmicks and I swear one of the only if not the only manufacturer who still implements LED notification.
I use audio evolution, but it doesn't have one auto silence tool like audacity (at least i don't think it does). I just ripple cut. Mostly use it for podcasts though, so it hasn't been TOO bad compared to desktop editing.
i wonder if i should wait for black friday to grab a mark4 or just preorder it now and get the earphones which i dont really need. I guess the pre-order bundle counts as a "black friday" like discount.
What I like about Sony phones is the stock android, no custom UI like other Brands so there is no buggy UI. Bugs on my Sony Xperia 1 II is minimum to zero, I only dislike the auto-brightness because sometimes it is so dim that all.
You know that it's a true 'pro' smartphone when Sony uses the specific details about the periscope zoom camera's range for marketing instead of using some basic "3x, 5x, 10x" terms or whatever to make it sound revolutionary. It's a real professional-use device when Sony states the specific details of its product in the forefront without the need to do more research about it.
I don't yet. Sony is a little inconsistent in which apps make the jump to older phones. Often I'd lean towards "probably not", but it is an editing app, and not something camera dependent. I'll move my prediction to an "uncertain maybe".
@@SomeGadgetGuy i appreciate your insight on this. Still waiting to see what phones come out this year as I'm close to needing an upgrade that I wont have to change for another potential 4 years
A small concern that Sony took out the FM Radio from within the 3.5mm jack (with wired ear buds). Only for specific situation all networks shutdown from a war event. That's just a small neurotic disaster fear kicking in.
For example, West Bengal government temporarily suspended internet services in the rural parts of Howrah district to rein in the unrest. Ukraine facing major regional internet outages as Russian invasion continues.
Super job as usual, with details about this device! But for a person who is not doing multi media production and just want to have a headphone jack with expandable storage.. this price tag stings. I just want a 2022 "flagship“ phone with all the hardware features of my S10. 😥
I kept telling people. We had HTC up to the 10, and we had LG up to the Wing. If people don't vote with their wallets, we lose features. That sucks. Now it's back down to the mid-rangers, and Samsung is trying to squeeze Galaxy A customers there too.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Correct. I bought my Samsung A52s 5G simply because I needed a new phone and wanted a headphone jack and SD card. The A53 ditched the headphone jack, and the SD card will be gone on the A54, I have no doubt. I'm hoping I can get back into a Sony if they can reintroduce support for Australian networks. I'm willing to pay for the features, I just hate it when they take the features, and still expect you to pay!
Seriously this really sucks though, I'm currently on my third insurance refurbished replacement S10 that accidentally fell 😉, And I really want to upgrade to a new phone. I'm willing to pay up to $1,200, But that $1,600 price mark for the Sony is crazy! If Samsung still made the 1tb version or put the Micro SD storage in then it's a Win. Until Samsung make a real Note again......
Excellent video, very objective and sarcastic as per usual. Greatly appreciated!
One of the best and accurate, in my opinion, "review" of an these 1s
it was over 5 years ago when I first saw periscope zoom tech in the Asus zenfone zoom. Seemed like a no brainer that it would be the future of telephoto just like how LG G5 ushered in the era of wide angle cameras on phones. It's kind of strange the periscope zoom today isn't more widespread, nice to see Sony is going with it.
Hell yeah I still have that Zen Zoom! That lens was miserable, but it was a step in the right direction!
Excited to get my hands on it 💪
You're gonna dig it.
@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah
Sometimes all we need is a specific checklist and if we have to pay to get it we will. If the phone does what we need it to do flawlessly then every dollar will be justified.
I love I can now use it for external display for my camera or even my Nintendo switch (which i haven't try it yet)
Yet another banger from the KING itself. Weldon, Sony for blessing us with this awesome phone
Really good set of information compared to the few I watched prior. None of them mentioned the music feature and that's just one of several examples, but also fair, since you couldn't demo it yet.
Juan,
Thank you for the realness of your review. I almost bought the Pro i. How does this compare.
UGH I WANT HIGHER OUTPUT AMPS SO BAD...
May I ask what you mean by R version?
@@Sabundy
Sony with their Alpha 7 cameras for example, has a normal 7, an S and an R version.
I'm glad to see Sony keeps making actual "pro" phones for people who know what they want 👌🏻
Nice review. Sony keeps at least for my point of view the necessary hardware. So which one to pick 5 III, 1 IV, or pro 1? What do you think for a video/photography purpose? Thanks
Exceptionnal review, so much so it gets pointless to mention it 🏆
I still don't mind people telling me 😊
this may be the first phone that a full warranty is worth paying extra for since the moving parts in the camera might break easily with drops.
im not sure, i mean iphone have extrem good stabilization + ProRes in 4k and that give extrem much data from the sensor.
You can't go wrong with v60. Same great audio with g8x but 5g, 865, stylus support, 20 percent bigger battery, $250
@@michael_c2 yeah, but I've had buggy software issues on my G8X, and wouldn't take that chance again on a phone with no more updates. You are right though, it is a great option
I would love to see you contrast this with the Xperia I -- what use cases for what camera/phone?
Juan, have any of your opinions changed after handling the retail version? Have firmware updates helped with heat management?
I'm finally getting back up to speed on the 1iv, and I think it's going to keep my sim card into next year. I'll have more to say soon.
How does the 1 IV feel in the hand? Is it easy to use with one hand?
did sony finally do shutter on voice in iv?? i have only one hand and i neeed that function
I didn't think I'd want this phone, but _my god_ do I want this phone...
Sony can sneak up on you like that.
Haha me to. Seen several previews now to have decided :)
2:18 - Do you brew beer, Juan? That song you always choose is the theme song to the Homebrew Happy Hour podcast from the Keg Connection folks.
LOL I don't, but they must have EXCELLENT taste in music 😀
Can it power high impedance headphones? Any dedicated hardware DAC and AMP?
Which is better for photography Juan? Vivo X80 pro or this?
vivo x80 Pro and this phone's overheating issue is a major show stopper.
@@super.spartan excluding the overheating issues, which is better for photography?
@@francisenaje they are about equal but why would you even consider a phone which is not going to do what it's supposed to due to overheating?
@@super.spartan What phone do you recommend?
Is the shutter speed faster than iPhones?
I know it's a long shot... But what do you think of xperia 1 IV vs pro I? Was leaning towards pro I considering the discounts right now.
What a beauty, screen is still 4k but with high refresh rate wow. It's claim 3yrs of battery life, that's true based on my experience with my xz premium, it took 4yrs to bloat the battery and just 3 days ago I replaced the battery by myself. Sony forever ♥
allrounder beast!
Between the 1 iv and the 5 iv which one should i choose? Besides the size of the phone of course!
Very exciting. Good bye Samdung and even One+. Quad DAC still a necessity?
The jack is clean AF with my IEMs, and very detailed
How many years of software support will Sony provide for this phone?
Some questions:
*Does it support active stylus?
*Can one enable pass through charging automatically for certain apps, like using GPS?
*Does it support all the 5G technologies/WiFi 6e?
*Is it a hybrid dual sim?
*Which HDR playback (if any) does it support?
The sim/sd card tray does say sim1 and sim2. Not will they take esim? Who knows 🤔
The 1 III allows you to add apps as “games” and use the pass through charging
No active pen support I can find.
You can add other apps as "games", but not all apps. I can't add camera apps for example.
My unit was a prototype, so I can't comment on radio bands and carrier support, but it was a champ on my WiFi6 router.
My favorite smartphone manufacturer I can never afford. The only Xperia I was able to get is Xperia ST21i back in 2012. I just love their design when it comes to smartphones. Classy without flashy gimmicks and I swear one of the only if not the only manufacturer who still implements LED notification.
If they'd just get us carrier support and market
how does photos/videos from 1 IV compare to 5 III ? does is still has the same sensors? Can you try? I remember you did review on 5 III also.
15:51 somebody please tell me what is that app
Audio Evolution.
what's your usual audio processing app in phone juan?
does it have Truncate Silence function like the one in audacity?
I use audio evolution, but it doesn't have one auto silence tool like audacity (at least i don't think it does). I just ripple cut. Mostly use it for podcasts though, so it hasn't been TOO bad compared to desktop editing.
@@SomeGadgetGuy i see, i tend to like to remove silent parts especially if the podcast is over 1 hour, but i guess for shorter podcast it's enough
i wonder if i should wait for black friday to grab a mark4 or just preorder it now and get the earphones which i dont really need.
Headphone jack is good quality one?
appriciate the hi-ress sound test
It's still blowing my mind that I pre-ordered this in may and I'm waiting on a September release date 🥴
I love my Xperia 1 but I have troubles with overexposed sky's with darker foreground any advise?
You know that it's a true 'pro' smartphone when Sony uses the specific details about the periscope zoom camera's range for marketing instead of using some basic "3x, 5x, 10x" terms or whatever to make it sound revolutionary. It's a real professional-use device when Sony states the specific details of its product in the forefront without the need to do more research about it.
This phone looks fantastic. Do we know if the Music pro app at 14:54 would be available on other Sony phones like the 1 Mk III?
Mmmm I want one but Sony Xperia phones are no longer officially available in Australia 😞
Can any of y'all recommend a different manufacturer that's dependable, That's a fairly new release that has expandable memory and headphone jack?
9:56 say Juan, give me the name & model number on these Bluetooth headphones ASAP!🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🤔Are these bluetooth headphones like a 2 & 1 that you can use with a headphone jack? I need something like these.
Nope those are traditional IEMs from ikko ruclips.net/video/635OuAmjIaA/видео.html
Bro, my old box has a viewing card. How do I switch to this box? Does it have a card slot?
This will be on my top wish list, camera setup is very good
That would be great if a a compagny makes a 2022 phone like the old Samsung Galaxy K Zoom with only one sensor and 10x optical zoom
It's funny the way all the tech tubers uploaded this video at the same time
