    I'm never gonna race a crit or ride a TT - I ride MTB and with my wife on our gravel and MTB tandems - but I'm loving watching your journey. The thing that sets this apart is your relatability. Most people probably can't relate to your bike power but we can relate to your obvious "joy of discovery". Your enthusiasm and appreciation for what you are doing is heartening to watch.
    Thanks for putting these together. All the best.

    Another great one! Congrats on that, very very impressive. The skinsuit and helmet definitely help (especially in a TT) but excited to see what you could do when you get more time in the TT saddle, and hell even with your own filly dialled in bike!. Definitely do the shootout! GCN did a video of it, just the midweek one, and it looked like an awesome ride. Would love to see you guys rip it up!

    Hey EJ - just curious, how tall are you and what size bike do you ride?
    Edit: you explain this in the video right after I posted the comment 😂. I was asking because the TT bike seemed tiny for you. Thanks for clarifying

  • @MaartenAnna

    Great result.
    My two cents from what I saw:
    The bike does look a bit small for you, but you sit really still one the bike, which really helps.
    But you can perhaps improve the hand position a little higher, making you a little more comfortable, as well as making the air go around you, rather than scooping it up.

    5:51 Does shooting to burn 95% of energy in first half make sense? Drag will scale as your relative wind velocity squared, so more of that 95% of energy will be lost to drag than if you took more of an advantage on the tailwind section. I know human bodies and races aren’t that simple, but the math aint mathing

    I said on my your Strava upload for a TT effort at these speeds with the power you already have. You could definitely make up those 26s with aero alone and it would be a lot easier to do so than the roughly 30w extra power you would need to make up that difference.

      @@Ejstrainingcamp it doesn’t have to be to start with. There is so much you could do for free with fit and positioning. At this stage as you are completely new to the TT bike there is so much low hanging fruit. I live in the uk and there is a massive TT scene here during the summer I could do 2 time trials a week within riding distance of my house.
      I knocked 90s off my 10 mile time trial time over 3 years for the same power and spent less than $1k total on upgrades. No aero testing but just eyeballing and racing.
      I’m also a larger rider just over 6ft and my PB for 10 miles is 19:40 at 345w.

    Nice effort!
    The TT pacing plan is backwards, it’s better to go hard while you have a tail wind, and easier when your going into a headwind.

    • @JonathanHair
      @JonathanHair 7 месяцев назад

      +1. Less energy lost to drag if you go easier into the wind and harder with the wind.

    • @bentaylor2607
      @bentaylor2607 7 месяцев назад +1

      Really? I'm relatively new to all things TT, but I had always heard that it is best to use more energy in harder sections like a climb or a headwind. Would love to know your rationale, thanks!

    • @peterdhaile
      @peterdhaile 7 месяцев назад

      @@bentaylor2607 Gladly, air resistance is a function of your drag coefficient multiplied by the square of your relative velocity. Riding into a 20mph headwind at 20mph means you're punching through a 40mph wind.
      It's the relationship between air speed and air resistance that makes it harder to go from 20mph to 30mph than it was to go from 10mph to 20mph.
      Going hard into the headwind and easier with a tailwind maximizes the penalty of the headwind and minimizes the benefit of the tailwind.
      Although, it should be mentioned that we're not robots; and for a ~9 minute effort like EJ did, it's pretty close to full gas the whole time anyhow; and it's probably not worth modulating your effort down too much for a TT of this length because it's probably more important to put more KJ's into the course instead of debating dialing it back for the headwind.
      But for a long TT, it absolutely would make a big difference.

    Great racing. I do question the advice about TT pacing, though.
    Suppose you have a finite amount of energy to expend over the course. Because drag force increases with the square of speed, and power lost to drag with the cube of speed, it is advantageous to go less hard into the wind and slightly harder with the wind at your back. This will minimize the energy lost to drag and be overall faster for the same average power.
    Of course, considering the physical constraints of a human it gets more complicated.
    Bestbikesplit is a tool that helps do this calculus.

    • @scottbaker5851
      @scottbaker5851 7 месяцев назад +1

      No. Tailwind equal outs everybody. You will have to twice has hard in a tailwind to make up time.

    • @JonathanHair
      @JonathanHair 7 месяцев назад

      @@scottbaker5851 no. The effect of drag is non linear. A tail wind doesn't make up for a headwind. More energy is lost in the headwind than gained in the tailwind due to the cube function of drag.

      I will take my 6 Ca state championship over some bike split website.
      Some years ago, I did a 40k TTT. Our team beat 2nd place by 5 minutes. Some of my teammates were on the 2nd place team. When we look over the race files. In the tailwind side, both teams were avg 36mph. Where we took them was the headwind side. They avg 24mph where our team avg 28.5 mph. So, I will take real-world data and experience.
