I had a chance to do about 1.5 in an older 737-200 sim a couple of years ago, doing mainly approaches and landings. The airplane is actually easier to land than a light airplane, although roll control is a lot different. Lots more weight on those wings than in a GA airplane. The sim is just a lot of fun. If I had that sim in my basement, I’d be like a cat with a cardboard box.....I could amuse myself all day!
Ernie, you are the best in the business! You never fail to enlighten. You’re technical knowledge and the ability to illustrate, is remarkable. Excellent work, Captain.
Had an opportunity to Fly the B-52 sim & KC-135 R sim at Castle AFB, Atwater Ca. Got to log many hours, courtesy of Friends at Castle AFB “School House”!
I was literally just there this past Thursday and got the opportunity to fly in sim number 15. I’m 17 and am so thankful for the opportunity and the invitation by Southwest to do that! Totally awesome facility and top notch training.
Thank you for this. It is a shame that we geeks cannot observe you actually flying. Don't they realize what a PR plus that would be? I can watch you in a G5 but not a 737. Ah, well...
So glad to see your opportunity to promote coming to fruition. Congratulations; and a sincere thanks to all the other folks that basically 'played along' on your behalf to create this video.... thank you.
Ah and Seattle is the only place in the US I've ever visited, I was there in July 2000 and a cousin of mine took me there when I was 12 years old when I believe there were only 2 runways, we only drove outside the perimeter, on the side facing mt Rainier which is something that's still vivid in my mind at age 34. Seeing that massive mountain which I believe is 60 miles away from point to point. You'd see a massive amount of haze/visual atmospheric intereference and then the summit. Amazing! That's the one thing the sim GPU doesn't do justice to. But that's obviously not the priority of a level D sim haha
Thx to you and Southwest for Sim Time....all the training, alienautics, FMS'S ect, and what does it come down to? FLY THE PLANE...airspeed and basics.. So much helps if you got proper basic training and a good attitude! Those basics are what keeps you alive
Thank you for sharing your time there in the Sim Training. Yes, it was nice seeing the flight information images in your heads-up display there. Well, again, congrats on becoming Captain!!!
That was Awesome!!! How wonderful of SW to allow you to do videos of all of behind-the-scenes stuff that people have no idea about. I had an idea about some of it, but oh my, I learned a lot. Thanks Ern!!
Appreciate the opportunity to fly with you... quite different than 40+ years ago, lol. Glad to see many of those upgrades/ changes that were implemented, all in the idea of safety! About 50 years ago, sitting at Cherry Point doing GCA/ASR approaches. It was great when those guys depending on you to land, got down safely and you heard, thanks! ILS was just an idea. Back then learning to control, we walked the airfield classroom with a ~3 ' stick, it had a aircraft on a string tied to it. That was our simulation flying around a airfield... radar wasn't too much better, LOL! It was so modern, I got my pictures posted into the Leatherneck magazine. But, as a elite group, we ALL made it happen; no matter your placement or seat! Aviation is a great lifestyle of perfection in control at all time! Now, my excitement is airtime,as a paying customer from GSO to NNG. From NC to Guangxi always delightful. While in Nanning or south of pilot mountain, NC it's a true pleasure, watching it all coming together! Congratulations and looking forward to many more post! Have a great day!
Very cool. I want that sim for my house! I’d be in there all day! My wife asked me what I was watching….I said a friend of mine just made captain for SW. She asked since when did I know an airline captain. I told her me and Big Ern go way back!
Thanks for the BTS of your path as pilot. Im working on making career 2.0 to aviation and vlogs like these are insightful of aspects that may not always be on the front burner. Maybe I’ll meet you at a GA in the valley. Take care.
The graphics in the sim are pretty stellar. Really amazing technology that's all in the name of safety. Love to see it. Thanks for sharing Ernie! Keep em coming.
Smaller aircraft can have the equipment to land in similar conditions, but they usually have much higher minimums. It usually boils down to the skill and proficiency of the pilot.
Had to stop at 11:34 and say WOW!. That is something else. I can't believe I'm in training to obtain my private pilot license. Thanks big Ern for the knowledge. You know it exciting to learn new stuff in the world. It makes us a better human being and person overall.
This was an OUTSTANDING video Big Ernie!! You answered several of my 738 sim flying questions and showed us all the ropes on successful landings and flows! THANK YOU!
We lived in A.J., AZ and would go to Mesa Gateway and watched military and Alegiant on the weekend, loved it, I have pics of military We now live in FL.
That’s what a pro looks like- so smooth, so clean even in a sim! Landing these things almost goes against instincts. Everything tells you to pull up as that runway just floods your windscreen! It’s more exhilarating than take off in my opinion great job. This was so neat to see!
That was so much fun watching you. Back in the 90’s I was a Microsoft fltsim guy for years and I was given the opportunity to get in a real flight sim at Flight Safety and did the left seat of a Lear jet. It was the most exciting experience I ever had!
When I was a *Student I had a chance to set in the left Seat in a new 747 Sim. ( back in '78, ...had to stop in 2018 )... could not fit that into my schedule at the time and now I wish I could have found a way........... and I'm thinkin' it was a Steam Gage panel , How the industry has changed..... my Cell Phone also I guess🤔. THANK YOU for the Ride along.
Amazing vid Captain Ernie! So informative I hope to be in your shoes some day. I wish we got the run down on the chicken on your simulator because that’s always a pretty funny story. Maybe for next video. Great job and much love.
Thank you for this video! As a flight attendant it is a great to see what is happening as we descend and I can hear from the jump seat the countdown to landing.
Great video , very cool! Love how useful the HUD is on the low vision fog landing, besides radar, I wondered how you guys landed so perfect in the fog , nice work, and Congratulations on making Captain👨✈️💙❤️💛✈️.
Great video Ern! If I played the lottery I definitely know what I'd be investing in if I won the euromillions £100million jackpot! a 737 and a320 level d sim in a small warehouse working enough hours in the day for customers, to try and make sure the venture isn't a loss, and at least breaks even! I learnt aged 14 in 2002 before my parents were ready to remortgage their house to have my eyes checked to see what ATPL eye requirements are. I didn't make the cut, and after flying cessnas and a few pa 28s for once a month between late 1999-2003 my parents became bankrupt anyway. I love your channel, it just keeps my head in the clouds in the best way possible, All the best and congrats bon your promotion.
Thank you, Ernie, for another outstanding video. You are performing a much-needed service mentoring the future of commercial aviation through your camera lens along with great tips from a seasoned aviator. These videos are actually good for the general public so they can appreciate the training pilots receive and what actually goes on in the cockpit once the door is closed and the plane is moving.
Very cool Ern!! You are doing a great job of focusing on how much Southwest is such a great airline and a place you really want to come to work. I wish I could have a stab at the simulator. Talk about sweeeet!!
As a fellow vet I'm glad to see you pushing yourself to the next level and not settling. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next video with the new stripe
That was awesome! I don't usually fly Southwest, but now I do just to say I had a chance you were the captain of the flight!! Good luck to your future!!!
Congratulations CAPTAIN Ernie!! Amazing stuff…. The moments we aspire to experience ourselves! Looking forward to seeing the journey ahead with 4 Bars added to the mix! :) All the best from a JFO in 🇱🇰
Thank you for this cool footage! Videos like this are very exciting to me because I’ll be starting my pilot training in Europe this December. In a few years I’ll hopefully be flying in the right seat of the B737!
Congrats Captain! I was able to get in one of our -800 sims in the old training building just after the MAX was in for SROV. Did a missed, clear day landing and then did a CAT III, all using the HUD. I bounced the CAT III. Lol. It is amazing how realistic the sims are though.
Congrats on the upgrade! Fellow 73 driver (FO) at one of those other airlines. Been interesting to see some of the subtle differences (and similarities) on how SWA operates the 73 compared to us and your ops in general. Enjoy the left seat and “guppy up”
Thank you for your awesome videos. I had a buddy that went through training and stop 3/4 the way through flight school and stop when he found out at the age of 50 years old he wouldn’t get hired by the airline due to his age. Very disappointed he was and went to work for the railroad and is now an engineer. Congratulations on making captain!
I’ve never flown a 737 but I can only imagine how accurate these sims gets just from sound and visuals alone as well as the movement it’s so accurate
Same here..
I agree fully with your experience...similar to a 172 say but when you start yanking and banking you feel the weight of it..
Ernie, you are the best in the business! You never fail to enlighten. You’re technical knowledge and the ability to illustrate, is remarkable. Excellent work, Captain.
Great CAT 3 ! KFAT gets foggy too! Congratulations Captain !
Congrats on the upgrade, cool seeing the sim stuff. Looking forward to the Captain videos.
More to come!
Thanks to those that helped you film this as well to be able to get us content like this. Looks like a great airline to work for.
Had an opportunity to Fly the B-52 sim & KC-135 R sim at Castle AFB, Atwater Ca. Got to log many hours, courtesy of Friends at Castle AFB “School House”!
Thank You!! Really....I have done a few hours in the 400 and the 800 ...very interesting and insightful...you're a great teacher...
I was literally just there this past Thursday and got the opportunity to fly in sim number 15. I’m 17 and am so thankful for the opportunity and the invitation by Southwest to do that! Totally awesome facility and top notch training.
I was 4 when I got my opportunity too
@@maximusglosser3152 No I don’t! My mom had a friend that let me in working for southwest he is now a check air man
Thank you for this. It is a shame that we geeks cannot observe you actually flying. Don't they realize what a PR plus that would be? I can watch you in a G5 but not a 737. Ah, well...
Love that you can hear the ambient cockpit sounds and engine noises. If I closed my eyes I’d think you were in the real thing!
So glad to see your opportunity to promote coming to fruition. Congratulations; and a sincere thanks to all the other folks that basically 'played along' on your behalf to create this video.... thank you.

I had an idea about some of it, but oh my, I learned a lot. Thanks Ern!!
Keltner is a great dude! I've known him for almost 20 years!
Awesome guy!
As a CFI working towards my hours, this was the greatest video that makes me so excited to continue!
keep at it big dawg. airlines are dooe
Appreciate the opportunity to fly with you... quite different than 40+ years ago, lol.

YOU GO BIG ERN!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏LOOKING LIKE THE SKIPPER THAT YOU ARE!!👍👍👍👍
Enjoyed watching you in the Captains seat & seeing you again in your element.May you have many, many happy years.

I have flown in a SIM. These graphics are awesome.
Great insight, video, and more importantly a super new Captain at SW. Well done, Captain.
Beautiful! Looking forward to more as you advance.
This was awesome. Love the detail you give in these videos. FOs will learn lots from you fast. Thx for sharing this brotha.
You bet
The graphics in the sim are pretty stellar. Really amazing technology that's all in the name of safety. Love to see it.
Thanks for sharing Ernie! Keep em coming.
Great educational insight upload BIG ERN! Congrats on receiving your 4 stripes!
Fascinating! I have often wondered how the big planes can land in fog and the small Cessna-type planes cannot. Great videos for non-pilots.
Smaller aircraft can have the equipment to land in similar conditions, but they usually have much higher minimums. It usually boils down to the skill and proficiency of the pilot.
This is by far, the coolest video on RUclips. Thanks for sharing Big Ern
Had to stop at 11:34 and say WOW!. That is something else. I can't believe I'm in training to obtain my private pilot license. Thanks big Ern for the knowledge. You know it exciting to learn new stuff in the world. It makes us a better human being and person overall.
Hope it goes well for you!
Always a great day when there's a new Big Ern video! :)
Congrats Captain Ern, well done!

Congratulations Captain😉. This was a very good presentation of how a consummate professional handles his work.👍
Thanks Captain for bringing us along on your training. Always enjoy your videos!

Ernie, you made it look easy! Good job!
I'm not a pilot but an aviation fan, and I love your videos
Wow. I’m super impressed with your sim. Thank you 🙏 so much!
I'm going through the dispatcher course right now at Riddle and oh my. This practical is stressing me out.
Congratulations Captain!!!
Thanks for doing that, because of you i am a fan of SouthWest Airlines i hope to see you one day on a flight
Congratulations on the training and thanks for taking us along with you!
Amazing vid Captain Ernie! So informative I hope to be in your shoes some day. I wish we got the run down on the chicken on your simulator because that’s always a pretty funny story. Maybe for next video. Great job and much love.

Thanks for the flights. Know that you will ace everything!
Hope so!
Best of luck with the rest of your training and CTL. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to put them together.
Awesome Big Ern !!!!!
Hey, thanks!
Now I know on takeoff why the plane seems to stop climbing and even seem to fall a little back towards the ground. Thanks Ern!
Captain Ern making those landings look easy!! Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to more captain vlogs
Most interesting video yet!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this video Big Ern! More of these whenever possible would be soo nice 🤝
Really neat to see all the work that you folks are doing up front
Thank you for this video! As a flight attendant it is a great to see what is happening as we descend and I can hear from the jump seat the countdown to landing.

Glad you enjoyed it!
It amazes me how exact it makes the terminal. They just added the auto dock systems in the past year and a 1/2
Your first non-simulator Cat III would be a real thrill/scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well that was just great big ern. Congratulations on your upgrade. Very impressed!!
That sim looks a lot nicer than the one I had for my EMB-120 type! It would fall off motion every three cycles lol! Keep grinding Ernie!
😂😂😂 had the same thing happen for my B1900 type rating
Great video Ern! Nice great landings
24:30 🤣 woo!!!
Terrific!
Congrats Ernie! I’ve been following you since about 6k subscribers, awesome to see how far you’ve come!
O wow one of my favorite Capts, from XJT. Great guy
Great vid. Always wanted to see the sims when I was in Dallas.
Your sims have excellent graphics! Very sharp!
Possibly your best ever! Congrats!
Amazing!!
Got to love the CAE7000XR sim! Fun stuff!
