  • Banana Circle: How we're growing bananas in Florida - When I built this banana circle, and recorded the video in 2020, I didn't know that banana plants weren't banana trees ... but you grow as a gardener and learn. I've also included answers to other banana growing questions in the description below.
    UPDATE: Quick view of the Banana Circle 2 Years Later • Banana Circle 2 Years ...
    Shout out to Coach Kim my personal health and fitness coach. She coaches virtually and you can learn more about her health programs at thekfactorcoac... She is helping me transform my health for life. Thank you Coach! I am forever grateful.
    What is a Banana Circle?
    A banana circle is a permaculture design that utilizes interplanting to create a more efficient and productive growing space. The design consists of planting banana plants around the perimeter of a garden bed, with other plants in the center. This simple arrangement maximizes space and sunlight, allowing each plant to reach its fullest potential. The Banana circle is an excellent example of how permaculture principles can be used to create more efficient systems that benefit both people and the planet.
    In our banana circle we have interplanted taro, ginger, and sweet potatoes. And in the center we compost the banana leaves, yard waste, and collect water like in a hugelkultur mound, just under the ground.
    Do Bananas Grow on Trees?
    Bananas do not grow on trees. Bananas look like they grow trees, but are actually giant herbs related to lilies and orchids. In fact, they are the world's largest herbaceous flowering plant. The scientific name for banana is Musa acuminata, and they are native to Southeast Asia.
    Bananas are classed as berries, and they grow in clusters around the end of a its branches. A commercial banana plant can produce up to 120kg of bananas a year, making them a very productive crop!
    Bananas have been cultivated for thousands of years and were even mentioned in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. They were also found in the legendary lost city of Atlantis! Today, bananas are grown in over 130 countries and are one of the most popular fruits in the world.
    How Fast do Banana Trees Grow?
    It's really a plant, and not a tree ... but with the right growing conditions, banana plants grow fast! In general, a banana plant will reach full maturity within two years. The height of the plant depends on the cultivation process, but they can grow up to 20 feet tall.
    Bananas are not picky when it comes to soil requirements and can grow in a wide range of climates. However, they do need ample sunlight and plenty of water-especially when the fruits are forming. Once the bananas are ripe, the leaves will turn yellow and then brown as the fruit reaches its final stage of ripeness. At this point, it's ready for harvest!
    Will Bananas Grow in Florida?
    YES! Our banana circle is proof. Bananas can be grown in Florida, but they will need to be protected from freezes. The plants will likely die if temperatures drop below about 28 degrees Fahrenheit.
    Do Bananas Grow Upside Down?
    Yes. Bananas do grow upside down. They grow from within a flower and the banana flower opens slowly over a period of several days. At first, the petals are folded together inside the bud. As the flower matures, the petals slowly spread apart until the entire bud is open. Each day a new row of bananas (called a hand) appears. Once all the bananas are showing, the banana plant continues to expose male only flowers that our bees and other pollinators love to snack on.

    I am a suburban gardener located in zone 9A in Northeast Florida. I started growing in this suburban lot in 2019 and have expanded the garden every year. In 2020 I started making Facebook Videos about the garden, and in 2022 created this RUclips channel. I enjoy making content about my garden, what I’m learning, and from time to time the general vlog, too.

    I was really impressed with this growing method. I can’t grow bananas outside all year and have to bring them in the house to survive the winter. My daughter moved into her own apartment the year it hit ten feet because hers was the only bedroom in the house that had ten foot ceilings. Keep that in mind, parents of failure to launch kids!

      Good things you had some 10 foot ceilings :) And I like it use the plants to encourage your children to take flight :) Thanks for watching!

      I learned a lot from you as I’m new . Love your accent water 💦 😊 something I heard on real America’s voice is that a study has shown that ever since sunscreen has come out there’s an 800% spike in skin cancer. Always do your own research though. Thanks for sharing about the banana trees. Great video

    My comment didn't show up here, but I watched this video four times. It's just so fascinating, so unique, from anything I've ever seen. I just couldn't stop watching! I can't grow bananas here in Jersey, but that doesn't dampen my interest one little bit. Have a great weekend!

      Thank you so much you've made my day. I don't think you have banana options in Jersey for sure. But I think you do have rhubarb and I can't do that. Though I'm not sure there's a comparison there. Happy gardening!

    Thank you for sharing this video. I live in Florida zone 9b I have 3 banana trees that I have in grow bags for about 6 months now that I want to put in the ground. and I love this circle idea. But I think I will build mine above ground instead of digging a hole. I'll create a circle add compost to the middle place my plants around the circle with mound up dirt. Great job!

    I take it the banana roots havent damaged your irrigation line

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  Год назад

      Great question. We don't use those lines, so I don't honestly know. They were installed with the house build 4+ years back to irrigate the grass. I only used them until the grass got established.

      Unlike tree' s root, banana's roots are too soft to damage any construction materials.

    this is the first time seeing a banana circle wow thats interesting. your soil looks great too when i dig in my yard its like a grey color mix of sand and small amounts of black :( you are a hard worker btw did you really do all that in 1 day? awesome work!
    one thing i would like to point out is there isnt really a great view of the current circle maybe a clip of it from further away so we can see how it currently looks. you spoke in front of it and panned to the top of the trees.

      Thank you for watching and I appreciate the compliments. If I recall, it took two days to get it all finished. You are right I missed the shot of the full banana circle now and had intended to include that but must have missed it during the editing process. I will share some on the community tab in a bit. The good news with soil if we give Mother Nature the right conditions it can get rebuilt. If we're willing to take the time to make it right. Thank you for commenting and happy gardening my friend.

      Thanks for watching. In 10B, I bet you can grow any kind. If you want to eat them, research good tasting varieties. I didn't do that, I just bought what was at the nursery. Now I Google everything before I buy plants. LOL.

    That looks awesome. So this is two years after your original purchase. I am in Tallahassee and was wondering if you have gotten any bananas yet. Also, what variety banana did you plant. Thanks for your videos.

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  2 года назад +2

      The original plants were purchased three years ago and they were transplanted into the banana circle two years ago. At the end of 2021 we did have our first bunch of bananas. We now have a new bunch on from a new plant this year that we hope to harvest in about 4 months.
      During winter we did make sure to wrap a fence around it and try to keep the bananas warm too.
      I don't recall the variety but it's not the variety they originally told me it was. The others are truly tiny the little ones, and I've not had any bananas from those yet.
      Thank you for watching and happy gardening. Good luck with your bananas.
