I've had mine for over a year now and I love it. Handles everything from sandy roadways to blizzard snow conditions and that's without even locking in the 4wd. You don't even feel it activate, but you know it is because you never slide. Nothing has broken in it and even if some stuff doesn't live up to her luxury suv standards, it still feels more rugged than she leads on. After a long day working in the natural gas industry I don't feel like I'm going to ruin anything jumping inside. The engine, although feeling peppy, I really wish it had more torque on the bottom end. 6 speed manual is pretty awesome though, and most people ride a couple times with me before realizing my car is even a standard. It's just such a smooth shifter. I am currently installing a curt trailering kit on it so I can haul a dirt bike on longer trips. Eventually, when I get bored with the warranty, I'll look into a turbo kit. Bottom line, I'll drive this car till the wheels fall off it and if they make another like it then I'll buy it again.

A couple of observations from an American Compass owner:
    1. The 9-speed gets terrible marks from most American reviewers. The FCA 9AT is among the most criticised transmissions on a new car. I don't understand why one would think a manual could be any worse. I can't speak for the engine, however, because USDM cars only get a 2.4L NA petrol that is unavailable in Europe.
    2. Jeep models have never been known for stylish interiors or even good ergonomics, but FCA have brought them from forgettable to at least competitive. They are still a bit cheap in materials, but the highlight is always Chrysler's uConnect system which is faster and more user-friendly than any other OEM system on the market.
    3. The seats are very poor for people of certain heights. I'm 6'1" and the driver seat is very uncomfortable due to the excessive headrest protrusion.
    4. The US does not get stylish choices like the Peugeot 3008, so the new Compass is actually among the more stylish choices in the segment.

  • @rotorblade9508

The 1.4l is not noisy in terms of sound level but you can feel some vibration above 3000rpm which is not pleasant. I went up to 4500rpm because it needs a 2000km breaking in.
The windscreen ventilation grille is made of some material that feels like a slime, if kept in the sun.
The suspension is a bit harsh but it’s better for off-road clearance and it does better on twisty roads and you get more confidence while driving.
Otherwise the interior is ok, rugged seats, good space, the infotainment is ok, not very intuitive though.
I particularly like the thing that the computer shows you the oil temperature (dial with no values), coolant temperature(in degrees C), transmission temperature (in C) and also tire pressures
The steering doesn’t have a feedback but it’s precise
The brakes are ok, they do the job, plus the computer downshifts when it detects you need help downhill.
The car I ‘ve been driving for a few days now (it’s a rental) is a 1.4 AWD, with parking computer, rear view camera, carplay, 3 way a/c, large infotainment, lane assist, lane change assist, so it has plenty of features available

I really do think that Carbuyer, Carwow, etc. just hate on American brands, especially FCA. No matter how good, or bad they are, they always get shoved under the rug. Yet, they praise most Ford products, which, newsflash: is an American brand! We have had several FCA vehicles (Jeeps mostly) and they have been beautifully driving, reliable, and efficient modes of transport. I just don't understand these reviewers' hatred of the brand.

    • @Yoopercooper
      @Yoopercooper 6 лет назад +5

James, I did, and I think we can all agree the Ford Ecosport in particular is an abomination, but that's not really my point here.I am an avid watcher of both Carbuyer and Carwow, and I like that your reviews are more for "normal" people with budgets and so on, not just hooning about like lunatics. However, it seems whenever you review unpopular cars, which typically are American brands in the UK, the reviewers really show how much of a chore it is to review them. I have noticed this with not only American brands, but also lower volume Japanese brands and other "non European" brands. I just wish you were the same level of thorough with all brands, not just the ones you take pride in from its origin. I do like the videos, though, just wish they were more fairly reviewed.
Thanks for your personal reply, it is appreciated!

    • @vladmihai306

It is because Europe knows how to make nice cars (at least from an interior point of view). Japan is arguably better in reliability and tie it in style with the europeans. American cars have...nothing special really. Jeeps are ugly, even though Fiat made them better. All local brands like chrysler, chevrolet are boring. So that is the state of it, not really a bias towards something.
Please point me to a great american car that stands out (so no Mustang, Corvette ZR6 or muscle cars in general, also not trucks, even though I must confess that some of your trucks are cool, like the Ford F150).
Oh, yes, Tesla Model 3, that is a fine american car. And will receive praise for sure when it will be reviewed by car buyer.

There are a few complaints that I find a bit strange--the bit about getting your clothes dirty on the sill can happen on just about any car for me. So if you don't want that to happen, go wash your car after driving through mud.
And I don't find the infotainment screen low at all--in fact, many American reviews are critical of screens placed too high and obstructing the view of the road.

This review is so far from the truth it is not even funny. This car is made to go offroad, hence the high step in, it prevents water from entering the cabin too easily, ergo; higher wading depth. Furthermore, how is a Peogeot on-road more fun than this off-road. A reviewer should be an all-rounder, and take all aspects into account, not just the on-roadiness. Furthermore, this car employs a British-made 4x4 system, that is permanent front-wheel drive, the rear only kicks if it detects loss of traction OR if you select 4WD lock. It does NOT have a low gear transferbox, however, the Trackhawk is equipped with a first gear that uses a much higher crawling ratio 21:1 (close to that), than the 9-speed auto in, for example, the Limited does. It also has a hill descent feature, which the standard 4x4 does not have. We have the Renegade, and I can confirm the middle console is not fitted properly, otherwise, it is an excellent vehicle.

Yes, I recall a British review of the Chrysler 300C in which a person yanked on the rear-view mirror inside the car until they ripped it off completely. Shoddy American quality, we were supposed to believe. I recall thinking: "Well, in America, when they are designing cars, they don't anticipate that some idiot is going to pull the damn mirror downward until it breaks, as in America it is not common practice to let orangutans inside cars. Apparently in the UK cars are supposed to be entirely orangutan-proof."

You know it's expected that everything is in place properly, therefore there's no need to point it out if it's normal. Let's say you buy some rice. You don't say "Wow! Ginny, I'm willing to believe the touch screen isn't in the optimal spot for your, but I don't see that as different from many models out there. I immediately thought of the Range Rover and Land Rover as featuring lower screen (including those with double screens) and the Jaguar as well. In fact, I found your review of the 2016 Evoq ruclips.net/video/u48YrUWGj6k/видео.html , in which the screen seems, on camera anyway, to be slightly lower than the one on the 2018 Compass, relative to the steering column and wheel. You described the Evoq screen as "well-placed" in that review. Of course, other factors could be at play: seat height, for instance. One clear difference in that Evoq screen is that it's angled to face "up" slightly - which might have made it easier for you to see or reach, but which could also subject it to sunlight glare. However you didn't mention a problem with that in your review of the Evoq convertible. The Jag F-Pace also has a screen in virtually the same place as the Compass, but you made no comment on its position when you reviewed that car. Maybe it all comes down to whether or not we "fall for" a car quickly enough that we overlook some flaws, or conversely, become disenchanted with it so fast that every scratch is a dent, and every bump in the road a pothole.
BTW, I tend to like the higher screens, too, closer to level with the gauge cluster, so checking it is a matter of scanning my eyes to the side only, not to both the side and down. I don't question your judgment of the Jeep here, except as it seems unwarranted when set against the other reviews.
Also - I'm glad to see you're appearing in more of the carbuyer videos lately of cars available in the US. They put you into so many of the Peugot and Skoda cars ...

Don't agree with you on the interior style, Ginny. It's always subjective but I find it to be really nice, fresh and welcoming. I like the Peugeot 3008 a lot (long time Peugeot guy) but the Jeep is a legitimate off roader compared to most other SUVs - not that you would ever really need it ;)

I'm still happy with mine (170bhp 4x4 Limited auto), got it as an undriven demo so I've put on 22k miles with not tech faults. Petrol average is about 30mpg on my commute, nearer 40 on motorway. Only problem is two flat tyres but I can't put that down to the car. 4x4 has been really useful where we live with last winter's heavy snow.

I want my SUV to be 4WD or AWD. A FWD or RWD SUV or crossover SUV makes no sense. What are you gonna do in the winter, when climbing up a mountain to get to your ski resort, or in a snowstorm in the city? A FWD would get stuck in seconds.

Peugeot 3008 won car of the year 2017. And this Jeep is a direct competitor to it. The Peugeot 308 and 307 also have been the best cars in their class for years. The Peugeot 3008 mentioning is quite natural here.

    • @EgoShredder

I'm a big fan of the old 306, but the 307 was notorious for being unreliable and poor to drive when compared with the 306. Not sure about the 308, perhaps that was a better effort?

I drive a "current" Gen 308 hatch: good car in terms of fuel economy, comfort, trunk space and decent design and handling in general. But it's certainly not a masterpiece: rough gearbox, noisy suspension, bad visibility, strange driving position and some interior plastics are not solid. It has never broken down in 100.000km, but it's having quite a lot of electrical issues (cruise control failure, stuck infotainment display and 3 lamps changed in the same position!)

  • @kangvp9512
    @kangvp9512 5 лет назад +1

Yeah but the Peugeot 3008 doesn’t offer AWD. Which is unacceptable for a so-called SUV. Even if you don’t use AWD, it’s just the idea of having an SUV with no AWD that bothers me, and I’m sure some of you guys too. It’s like having a FWD muscle car, stupid, pointless and all in the name of saving money.
