- I've spent the last week with the 2019 Jeep Compass. I wanted to see just how good this new compact SUV from Jeep is. It is meant to have proper off-road pedigree so I decided to put that to the test by tacking it up the nearest big hill !!
Thank to Jeep UK for the loan of the car.

I just bought my 2019 Compass last Saturday. Mine is silver. I am so happy with it. It is my dream car.
Congratulations...Enjoy 👍
Congratulations 🎊
My silver 🥈 arrives soon - can't wait!
I got limited plus 4×4 awesome
Getting mine next week . This is my first take on the jeep family . Very excited .
Bridget Bailey it’s a money pit
Great review! I took one of these for a test drive recently and when I looked at some reviews wondered if it was the same car as they were so negative. I wouldn't say it was the best car on road but I don't think SUVs are and this seemed competitive with other SUVs in its price point. And the interior quality and space were fine, again maybe not the best but certainly class competitive. And it is a rare thing in the segment in offering genuine off road capabilities if you go for the 4x4 version. This is probably silly but if I was to buy an SUV I would want it to be able to go off road otherwise it is just paying more money for a heavier and less efficient car that doesn't drive as well. It's why I still have a soft spot for the Shogun Sport and Land Cruiser, they may be mediocre on road but are genuine go anywhere off roaders. The Compass felt a little old school but in a nice way and I find it a bit annoying when other reviewers review cars out of context. Few would review a Ferrari or Lotus and give a 1 or 2* review because they can't carry 7 people or tow a 3 tonne boat but it is common to see actual off roaders get bad reviews because they don't drive like a Civic Type R.
I have the limited diesel for two months and I live in a Greek island this car is amazing I love it
Nice lil car awesome view. Thanks as always bud.
Great, Informative review! We've just ordered the Compass in this Hydro Blue and looking forward to many happy miles. Thanks for sharing :)
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Awsome video! Now I drive the same track with my 98s Honda Civic
Loved the video, real world review, very honest, clear explanation and no bullshit which I like as opposed to some others. Thanks for sharing, I've just subscribed, cheers.
Thanks for the Sub Nigel. Glad you enjoyed the vid and welcome to the channel 👍
Good review! Suspension and out of arch wheel alignment are real catch.
Great review! Greetings from a 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk owner! (Canada)
Hi Jorge and hello Canada 👋
We have the '19 Compass limited In Laser Blue. Love it :)
Very nice video sir Pete! The views drone footage and music was epic. I’ve always wanted a Jeep but never pulled the trigger on one. But with the release of the 2020 Jeep gladiator I will be definitely looking to get my hands on one of those. As always keep up the great work!!
Cheers Colton 👍
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am considering of buying Jeep Compass Limited. This video gave me a good confidence to go ahead.
That’s great to hear 👍
I've had mine for a month and I love it!
Awesome looks, engine and a great suspension with a perfectly matched power steering. Its a great experience driving a compass everyday.
Love your dogs and now there are two to enjoy. Hope that they are getting on well together.
They are slowly starting to become Pals. Darcey wasn't to impressed with the new arrival but has started to play with her over the last couple of days 😀
I just bought my Jeep Compass Latitude three weeks ago. I love it. Olive Military Green with full Sun/Moon roof. I cannot wait to take it to OBX. As a side note my previous Jeep was a Renegade. I still feel that was a better Jeep, even though it doesn't look as good as a Compass, I still feel it had better power and turning. But of course I had to replace it with the Compass. And it was no fault of the Renegade, because a tree fell on me on my way home from work. Kinda sucks because I loved that Renegade. But my Compass is still a worthy replacement.
Side note: if the pick up is too dead for you just turn off the engine cut fuel feature (I don't know what it's actually called). There's a little button next to your parking break that has a "A" with a circle around it. If you push that button the engine will no longer cut when you're at a stop. But me personally, I keep that feature active. Because in Northern Virginia/D.C traffic it's totally useful.
Love the Compass. Have you tried the Wrangler 😬
@@PetrolPed no I've never touched the Wrangler. But I'd love to give it a go. I'm thinking after ten years of owning my Compass I'll look into a Wrangler.
Nice review! I got the same model 1.4l Petrol Limited and its nice and confortable and give you all what you need.
👍
Great fun review pete, i currently have a jeep renegade limited 1.6 multijet diesel, its a great car had it 7 months and love it, once my hire purchase contract ends in just over 4 years im seriously thinking about getting a jeep compass, something about jeeps outside and inside, mines black outside and full black leather interior inside with heated front seats and steering wheel, brilliant car, yeh some cars are more luxurious inside but for me the layout and ruggedness an everything about it hits the spot, jeep for me seems to be my favourite brand 👌👍🏴
Great and awesome review.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Very good episode
Great review as per normal. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers 👍
There's definitely something about a Jeep. Give us a wave when you can see the IOW next time..... Nice one
LOL...did you not see me 😜
Great video. I'm going to get the Compass Trailhawk as soon as the 2020 registration numbers come out. I have loved my jeep cherokee 2.8 Auto 4WD for the last 12 years and this will make a superb replacement. Can't wait ;-)
You are gonna love it 👍
@@PetrolPed Thank you I have no doubt at all about that. :-)
Awesome review It does drives awesome off-road 👍the black leather seats looks way better and classier
Yep, I'd go for dark seats 👍
Those drone shots were top tier, very fun review
Glad you enjoyed it
Good review and video
Cheers Ron 👍
Like how you didn't seem impressed by the compass and suddenly when tackling the rutted dirt road , uphill mind you, in locked 4wd . It changed your perspective about the JEEP.
Cheers Eric...it was very impressive 👍
Drone shots work nicely. Enjoy the videos more and more. Fun looking at older ones and seeing the progress.Engine sounded bit like a Routemaster but tat might have been the mic. Decent motor (but that mark 2 Cherokee? Ugh!) :-) Keep it up fella
My Rode mic pics up sound so well it did sound a bit rough !!
Has Jeep solved the engine oil consumption problem ? There is a class action about that.
We don't get the diesel version here in the States, sadly. But we do have the TRAILHAWK version, which ups the off-road ability substantially. I actually like my Jeep to sound like a tractor :)
So do I
Nice colour and an interesting option in the mini SUV market. Seems more than capable of coping with what most people would need to deal with, IE a muddy/icy road or a car park that has turned into a swamp like we get at Goodwood when it rains.Like the drone footage, gives the videos that professional touch.
Not often I get the chance to get the drone up. Such good fun too 😜
GREAT! my first jeep right here.
I’m a US viewer who owns a new version a Compass. After 14 months of use I’ve come to really like it. It’s mostly used around town and shooting and fishing. My biggest complaints are too many gears in the auto trans and the stop/start function. I just use the manual option on the transmission to get around the slushy feeling and slow delivery of power. It’s comfortable and has sufficient size for my uses. I just wish they had a manual gearbox on the high end models.
Great to hear you like your car 👍
Felix D that’s quite strange, here in India, Jeep customers are demanding for an auto trans but we only have manual even in the higher end models!
Great car !!
Hi Peter, Jeep are well known for their off road ability they have massive ability and the wheel articulation is just amazing they can drive through or over any terrain you can find but I don’t see many on the roads here in the UK it’s a ideal farmers vehicle they as good as any Range Rover / Land Rover they also have a massive following I must admit for the money it’s a good buy. Would I have one yes but I would have the Overland what a vehicle but I have noticed people buy them but sell them on quickly and the is few for sale with low mileage and low price to match they are not expensive but have been criticised for build quality in the past. A great video Peter I’m loving the new puppy so so so cute when I see a new puppy I turn into a big soppy girl 🤣🤣 my wife did laugh at me and my children still do. You live in lovely part of the UK looks very nice. Best wishes Mr Soppy
Thanks Mr Soppy. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 👍
Petrol Ped 🤣😂🤣😂
This is a fair and unbiased review. 👍
I watched CarBuyer’s review as well and oh my God. It’s as if someone paid them money to make stuff up about it and generally, completely slate it. That one is shocking. I won’t be watching anything from them again.
I always just say it how it is 👍
It’s a strange thing but Jeep remains a company with such a good name despite a host of hard to like models in the past 10/15 years. Remember mine was a reliability disaster but when it was running, it was a car I really liked..then it usually died again the next day! However...I am sure that you as do I, recall the wonderful Shogun. I also did 105,000 miles and replace an alternator and the exhaust system at 95,000 and 101,000 miles respectively. Nothing else ever went wrong and working on it showed how beautifully made it was..dated looking perhaps but underneath was precision engineering. Your Jeep was good...but we both know that a Shogun would have laughed at it. If only Mitsubishi had not let it get so out of date that it looked ridiculous when taken off sale last ŷear but it remained invincible. Now though we are talking Jeep...worth a good look I would say...🤔🙂😀😀
I still smile when I see a SWB Shogie. I think they still look brilliant. I always wanted a Mitek Evolution !I took my Shogun off road quite a lot and on far more extreme terrane and it never faltered...brilliant 👏
Jeep reliability has been hit or miss for me. My jeep liberty was a total unreliable piece of shit, but my jeep Patriot has been a good car with 240,000 miles with no real issues, I have had a couple very small issues like ac (don't remember the issue but it only cost me 60 dollars) and a slow radiator leak that I patched and is still holding well. My Patriot had never stranded me unlike the liberty, I'm nervous about getting a compass because idk whether it will be a hit or a miss.
Great review Peter. I like the Jeep for its practically and yes I know it’s no Range Rover but I think the Jeep would make a great work horse, probably beat a Range Rover hands down when it comes to that sort of work. Like for goodness sake all most Range Rovers see when it comes to off roading is speed ramps.!!
Range Rovers are unbelievable off road, just shame most of them never actually get to do it 😂
When the first bit of film came out, from a distance, it looked like one of the new Range Rovers!!?? Spookie...!! :-\...
You're not being OCD about that rear wheel. It's the first thing I noticed too :-((...
Now for the "Off Roading bit".
So you drove off the Trundle and up a LANE (That's still not off road!). My Delica would have done that in 2 WD :-))... You did say that's the best off road you could find. However... Dare I say you could have opened a gate or two and turned off the lane and into those open fields? :-))
Great video again PP. At least your Drone went "off road" :-))...
I knew some people would comment on the off road not being too challenging 😜
I happen have a soft spot for Jeeps too having had Cherokee 4.0 Ltd in the late '90's, this is another really very good review, loads of info, great personal point of view, great presenting, good to see you got your drone out, - you know one day you may get a call from channel 5 or someone - really
RB - You, Pete and Howard Richie should have been asked to do the New Top Gear and not those two lightweight numpties they're getting in. Flintoff and McGuinness... Jeez...
Cheers Roger. Not often I have the chance to get the drone up. It's always such fun to fly as well as adding some great looking footage to the vid 👍
The Zanzibarbarian I don’t think the BBC could afford us but thanks
Good stuff. Running road tyres or all season tyres etc? Wondering what sort of difference different rubber can or could make.
Oh, tyres for off road make a huge difference. Interestingly, Land Rover make a point of using normal road tyres at their off road experience centres to show just what their cars can do 👍
White leather in an off road vehicle? That's bananas.
Absolutely great review, you’ve put rest to so many queries in my mind about this mini jeep! Thumbs up for that, although I wish we had automatic version of this jeep in diesel over here. I think manual one would just do fine.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Well, Pete, I noticed that lack of symmetry with the rear wheel straight away - just makes you think it's not put together right. Could have been designed better..... Great to see the pooches getting on well!!👍🏼🐶🐕
Cheers Ian, they are slowly becoming friends 😂
cute pups and pooches ped...i gotta get a 40kg airedale in mine
Mate, I love Airedales ! I fact we have friends with Airedales but too big for us so looked at Welsh Terriers, wasn't sure about them so went for Schnauzers and never looked back !!
@@PetrolPed you are too young for welshies..they belong on an old mans lap imo....enjoy the yappy schnauzers, we get the club walk where we do, and we put ear plugs in ;D
Good review. That engine sounds a bit tractor like 🚜good to see the drone in use . rear arch I don’t understand why they have built it like that?👍🏁
The wheel arch gap could be a show stopper for me !
Hi pete. Nice review good visuals. Is it petrol or diesel version? How about turbo lag.. n steering feedback n driving pleasure?
This was the diesel version 👍
My husband is making fun of me after your 'OCD' comment regarding the rear wheel arch. It was the first thing I noticed. It seems you and I are two 'Petrol Peds' in an OCD pod!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one 😜😂
Thks.
My pleasure 👍
Never Knew Claypit Lane was a Byway Open to All Traffic after living in Chi for 5 years. I decided while driving through Lavant to have a little drive up there. Needless to say after the Shooting Range it was a little too Hardcore for my Cooper S!
Cooper S...OOPS !
always enjoy your reviews I am not a fan of the compass I would go for the 2019 Subaru Forrester.
Cheers Michael. I should try and get hold of one of those 👍
The forester has a CVT....which feels terrible offroad. I have an 2011 Outback with CVT and 07 Forester with regular auto gear box...the forester feels so much better when tasked.
An educated guess would be the throttle is by design. It probably has a cam or something on it so the first bit of travel is less sensitive for low range rock crawling etc. BTW are you any closer to trying a Merc 400d All Terrain?
Thank for this. No closer to the Merc at the mo 😥
I’m 6ft6 with a 36” inseam and I really struggled getting into the compass, even with the seats adjusted it was a bit tricky getting my knees past the steering wheel, I’m assuming you didn’t have that problem??
I’m 6’3” with 35” leg. Just enough room for me 👍
Evo pal. You can see where Karoq and Kodiak, or however it’s spelt, got their inspiration from. I still love my lil Shogie, although thirsty. It’s not as chunky Jeep looking as the previous models.
The Shogie has a spoiler on the roof...NUFF SAID !
Your "gets my right eye twiching" comment reminds me of Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) in the Pink Panther films. Good though the car is, I'm too much of a Londrover fan to actually buy a Jeep.
I would choose black leather after than a lighter colour as featured In the press leather
Me too 👍
Hi Ped
Excellent production, you are going from strength to strength.
Compass looks like a strong contender in its market segment, have to disagree with you on the front grille. To me it just does not look right, but I can appreciate Jeep are trying to retain their heritage.
Great to see, if only briefly, Pooch & Pup🥰🥰🥰
I thought you would like the pups starring in their first review !
The wheel in the wheel-gap thing, is because the coilspring and shock setup is mounted diagonally pointing backwards, I'm sure it has to do with approaching obstacles, and the corresponding wheel-travel. Good question though. Would like to see what the reason is. Our Renegade has the same mounting (same chassis).
Interesting. Thanks for posting 👍

Mr Petrol ped wts your opinion on jeep compass vs Audi q3 Quattro
Jeep better off road, Audi better on road 👍
Hi I am in Portugal and contemplating on purchasing a Jeep Compass limited 1.4 petrol which is approximately €33500/-. This would be my first suv buy. My wife and daughter insist on buying the Mercedes A class 160 petrol which is about €29700/- . I understand the two vehicles are not of same segment. As a third person advise which one would be a better purchase keeping in mind maintenance, cost of ownership, class as well and reliability.? Enjoyed watching your video especially the view at the end! Muito obrigado,
Hi there. I'm not sure how to even start comparing those two cars, they are so different. For road driving and comfort I think the A Class would be the one to go for. However for practically and something a little bit different then the Jeep would be a good choice 👍
Everytime I see one now I’ll think of that wheel for sure. Side view of clocks, hmmm, not so sure. Love these new touchscreens, however, we all spend more time wiping the displays to rid of the prints lol. Hope it’s better at 4x4 than the Outlander Phev, it’s total rubbish. Big time.
LOL...sounds like you have personal experience of that 😂
Hi Pete...any more Advanced Driving with IAM?
Maybe, it all went a little quiet as the initial conversations I had. I need to push that one again 👍
I. Excellent. Which engine was it? Thanks
You can drive also the audi TT on that off-road... :)
Probably 😜😂
jeep compass or chevrolet equinox? which one is better?!
Not driven the Equinox so can't answer 😥
I’m in a sad place right now because I don’t know what to do, as many people know there’s a shortage of semiconductors and it’s had an affect on all car manufacturers. I know you have driven a countryman and like your minis. I ordered a Mini Countryman all 4 with all the options in March of this year, sadly it was due 4 weeks ago but had been stopped by mini uk due to amplifier shortage for the Harmon Kardon. The worst part about this is they don’t have any idea as to when they can get the part could be weeks, months who knows so it’s been sat in a compound collecting muck for a month. I have rang every dealership within a 100 mile radius of me just to see what I could find available to buy new right now and it’s so bad, I need to change my CLA coupe 2020 because I can’t even get it on my drive as it’s so low but that’s another story. After ringing about 50 or so different manufacturers across the uk I found about 4 vehicles (yes it’s that bad) but I don’t know what to do or choose now 😢 So here goes there’s a Jeep Compass Trailhawk edition, Peugeot 3008 hybrid 300bhp, golf or a seat ateca. These are cars that are readily available this minute and I need to choose fast as cars are flying off the shelves, please help petrol ped what would you do or choose?
It’s a huge problem at the moment. Gutted for you. I’d go for the Pug…great looking car and 300hp 👍
@@PetrolPed Thank you, I was leaning more towards the pug so this set it in stone. Love the videos keep it up 👍🏻
Nice looking vehicle, seems pretty capable if you live on a rutted track... Could I suggest a vehicle to test if you want a performance SUV...…………………….. The Skoda Kodiaq vRS.??
Trying to contact Skoda Press Team at the moment so fingers crossed 😜
Petrol Ped Nice one!!
First! I like the exterior, but I’m NOT sure about the interior
BOOM 💥
I really like the interior it has a good balance between luxury and ruggedness!
if you're testing it off-road, why would you not drive the Trailhawk edition?
Er because I had this one 🤷♂️
19 toyota hybrid offroad please
So whos Diesel engine are they using now ?. Sounds really old fashioned and noisy. The used to use Italian VM Motorini engines.
it is a Fiat diesel
It uses Fiat's Multijet 2 engine (2008+)
Great Jeep but the Petrol Pups stole the show :-)
You have a good pint there Andrew 😂
Is it a Jeep pretending to be a Range-Rover or a Range-Rover pretending to be a Jeep !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only the price tells the whole story. 😘😘😘😘😘
Good point 👍
Bored of Range Rovers, there are 20 of them on my street.
what is your star sign ........... just wondering
Gemini 👍
Dont think my two wolf hybirds would fit in the trunk lol
LOL 😂
Well the 2019 jeep compass is a lot nicer than the 2014 version.
Yep 👍
Had to get a rental while my 14' Compass was serviced for safety recall a few days ago and our free rental was a 19' Compass...and I had the same thought when I got inside of it for the 1st time! Guess great minds do think a lot! :-)
I would guess you need lots of throttle travel for off road when you hit lumps and bumps and get thrown around your foot on a sensitive throttle would be a nightmare
Good point. Not thought of that 👍
Land Rover remap the throttle response when you go into low range so it doesn’t get jerky when going over rough ground. It does it on my 20 year old TD5 Defender as well as my more modern Disco4.
At long last Jeep are making there smaller cars look better I have a 2007 cherokee/liberty mechanically it is good proper four wheel drive with low gearing but god does it look bad compaird to my old 2000 XJ .
I have some lifted xj content on my channel......I obviously only use it as a toy but would i buy one for a daily ? mmm well i feel it's a bit pricey if i'm honest, the renegade is too small..the weasel jeep is too weasely...and the grand cherokee is too thirsty...
back to square one
looks like a 2018 to me
So very under powered. Until they get the 2.0 in this its really not worth general driving. not very comfortable. and mine had electric issues within the first 500 miles. dealer took it back. Great look but it misses the mark.
Meh, it's ok, I just don't like rounded body styles on any type of off road vehicle. And yes, the rear wheel to arch position looks really odd. Some online pics of it seem even worse!!! It has to be down to the suspension arm travel, but it's a poor design issue appearance wise.
I wonder if my temporary Yaris would go up Chalk Pit Lane?
You should give it a try 👍
@@PetrolPed 😁
It's very " nice" ! If yer know what I mean.
I do 😜
It sounds like a tractor! Is it due the location of the mic?
Maybe 🤔
Only thing its missing is a sunroof
You can get one as an option but it does nick a bit of headroom mostly for the rear passengers.
how much tax did u pay?
Not sure what you mean ?!
Nicely made video Pete.
Car not for me though.
You aren't OCD. it annoys the hell out of me too. That wheel is not in the centre. I CANNOT GET OVER IT. RUINS THE CAR FOR ME
😂😂😂
# 13 Like and comment ( my favourite number ) Boom
AWESOME !
front wheel is also a little offset, so...
and i thought my 2.4 mitsubishi diesel was clattery. the Jeep sounds like a tractor.
I'm not sure my high quality mic helped 😬😂
-1 one is "really cold" and then idling the car in order to defrost the front window? Amateur hour!
So where's the off-road part? All I saw was a gravel road and some happy-clappy bearded guy raving on how "great" it is off-road.
Next time I’ll drive off with a frosted window 😜
Ever heard of scratching off the ice with one of those plastic thingies...? 🙄
Second
Well done mate 👍
way too many problems with the software and the gears. If everything would work it would be nice. But it is more Fiat than Jeep.
Everything still works on mine!
Off-Road????-----lol
I know I know...not really that challenging 😂
That was totally shit! My SEAT ALHAMBRA would of driven up that track 😂
Too much talking and not getting to the point
The point being ?! 😜
Eh?
Off ROAD???? Are you serious? My Toyota Yaris would do that in no time, and I have a Jeep Compass!
