  • In this video, I am restoring an old hunting knife.
    A little background to this project. After the hunting knife project, a good friend of mine contacted me.
    Previously, the story was interesting: “After watching my video about the restoration of a hunting knife, he called me and said that he had the same hunting knife. But his condition is slightly better than in the video. He advised me to restore the hunting knife, wanting to preserve as much of the original knife parts as possible. A few days later, the knife was on the table in my workshop.
    The video shows the entire restoration process, starting with dismantling the remnants of the knife handle, cleaning from rust by electrolysis, leveling the surface with sandpaper of different grain sizes, polishing the tool to a shine, restoring the missing parts of the knife. Restoration of the bone neck of the knife. Also, for the first time in my projects, cleaning of parts with oxalic acid is used. And much more.
    Special thanks to Alexander Weingart for providing the Intro. www.weingart.d...

    Thanks for watching! :)

    The only reason I watched this video was to watch your process with the stacked leather, and you left half of that out. The obnoxious amount of "like and subscribe" reminders will ensure that I will absolutely not do that.

    My father had the same type of knife, a pair, in fact. One was a big bowie and the other a smaller one for lighter tasks, just as the one you worked on.
    The inscription on my Father’s blades said “solingen steel” and both were meant to be carried together on a double leather sheath.
    An important detail to keep in mind is that these knives were takedown knives. No glue or solder was intended to be used to fit the handle. That’s why the end of the tang is threaded, it is not pinned and the pommel has a screw bolt.
    To release a rusted pommel of this kind without damaging the horn of the handle with the heat of the torch, a rust penetrant solution and patience (maybe a lot of it) should have been enough. Another thing to keep in mind is that torches are not suposed to be used on heat treated blades unless you are using it as part of the heat treating process, you are willing to repeat it, or loosing some of hardness doesn’t bother you. Torch for the pommel and for the guard is two times too many.
    Being honest, I like the content of your channel very much and you are impressively skilled, but didn’t enjoy this video in particular.
    Others are great 👍🏼
    All the best.

    Excellent job. Nice to see someone not go directly to a side grinder, and to leave the pitting. We're all pitted in some way or another.

    I have exactly the same type of knife and the bone handle is loose and so is the aluminium pommel. Apparently it is German made by Jul Herbertz Solinger. I would like to restore it following your method. What liquid did you use to "refrigerate" your knife and would ice water work instead? Also, what was that grey paste you used to fix the knife stop (video:12min 03)? I've never seen that kind of screwdriver before to release the brass nut on the tang. I've since learned that it's called a snake-eye or a spanner screwdriver.

    • @AnDIY_Handmade_Restoration
      @AnDIY_Handmade_Restoration  2 года назад

      I will answer some of your questions. As for the paste, it is for brazing copper pipes. I made the screwdriver myself. Metal cleaning is carried out using electrolysis.
