Does Denmark have double standards on refugees? - BBC News

  • Denmark has been accused of discriminating against refugees by human rights groups, following its welcome of Ukrainian refugees compared to others.
It has passed a law allowing refugees feeling the war in Ukraine to stay in the nation for up to two years and plans to host up to 100,000 and grant work permits.
However, the Danish government has also been working on plans to reduce the number of non-EU asylum seekers.
Last year, it began controversially revoking the residence permits of hundreds of Syrians from the Damascus area, arguing it was now safe for them to return.
The BBC's Hanan Razek reports from Denmark.

As is often the case, Denmark is being wildly misrepresented by the English language media. Denmark is not giving Ukrainian refugees a permanent right to stay in Denmark forever. It is giving them the right to be in Denmark for up to two years.
Syrian refugees were also given a temporary right to remain in Denmark. It was never a permanent arrangement. There is no discrepancy in how Denmark is treating refugees and asylum seekers. Denmark is not giving any refugee a permanent right to live in Denmark.

Denmark has a population 11 times smaller than the UK . We have 40.000 Syrians, the same number as the UK. We have now 25.000 from Ukraine. The UK has 12.000. BBC sends a reporter, arabic as I understand it, why don't you have an English reporter ? She talks with Syrians that have been here nearly 7 years. They are very a angry. Next time the Danish TV sends a reporter to England I think it would be a splendid idea to send an arabic reporter and ask what the Syrians in the UK think of the country. In The Guardian you can read how difficult it is for Ukrainians to get in the UK. But of course its much smarter to send an arabic reporter to Denmark and ask the Syrians about the Ukranians in Denmark. Shame on BBC.

If we look at the dismal integration records of certain groups in Denmark, who can blame them? Maybe Danish society is less welcoming and a bit racist towards Middle Eastern refugees but the fact remains is that these people simply don’t fit in well in Danish society - but they could fit in better in other Middle Eastern countries, so why should Denmark take them in? A government needs to look after the interest of the country and it simply isn’t in Denmark’s interest, both financially and in terms of social cohesion, to admit Middle Eastern refugees.

The track record of integration has been poor in Denmark on both sides and it is both the fault of the Danes and the refugees so why keep doing the same thing? If you let in more of them everyone - the refugees included - will be unhappy.
Maybe if these people went to a less racist society like Canada they'd be doing better but Denmark isn't Canada. You can't just change the nature of society. Also if there wasn’t a law exempting men from leaving do you think more wouldn’t and in time when the Ukraine government loses more control over its borders do you think a lot of men won’t flee? I feel like you’re trying to turn this into an argument of (these Syrians aren’t brave) when they’ve already essentially lost the war they were fighting and have been doing so since Russia and Iran entered syria so there hardly is anyone to fight for and you’ll just return to life under the dictator you fought against.

You have to choose one of them. If you want to live by a 1400 year-old book that tells you that you can beat your wife if she disobeys you, you can go live in Turkey where you can do just that. And muslim men who live by Quran cannot be taught things like gender equality (Quran clearly says that men are superior) or LGBTQ+ rights (Quran says they are damned) therefore it is impossible for you to be civilized and entegrated to society and respect others if you are both muslim and man. You do have a choice here; reject the none-sense of the islam and be civilized or go to Turkey and live your religion safely there. It is that simple.

So I'll have a go☺️. I think it's because they identify more closely with the Ukrainians, the way they live their lives is not drastically different from the Danes. They would quickly integrate. Whereas the Syrians are Muslim and this typically rigidly governs the way they live. In short, they will just live on estates with other Muslims and never really "join us". And the % living off the state is huge compared with everyone else here. And criminality the same. I know you don't want to hear it.

First of All, Greetings for Brothers in Denmark from Poland - You're a True Ally and Friend - Baltic Sea Region will never forget Your Support. Having Said That.
I remember 2014 invasion of Crimea. Most of the Victims (almost 2 million) escaped to Poland. Of course they were not declared refugees because Poland couldn't afford giving the refugee status for 2 million people...and that was fine for the EU. Why?
      1. The EU and Ger-Money, France didn't want those Ukrainians escaping the genocide because they were getting extremely cheap gas from Russia(and they didn't want to annoy Putler) - just like Oil for Americans in Iraq similar ethics.
      2. The EU wanted Poland to take so called refugees from Syria and around and at the same time they treated Ukrainians like SubHumans. They didn't get the same treatment. And Again that was fine For Ger-Money.
      3. Poland and few other countries couldn't accept those double standards. It seemed that if You were Ukrainian and Russians bombs were killing You...well we don't care. Money Follow the Money....
      4. Even before the 2022 War Poland received the biggest immigration wave from the whole Europe, which was covered up by the Western Media - Oil and Gas Lobby is very potent.
      5. Denmark was one of the few countries which was trying to say NO to so called immigration quotas established by the EU.
      6. Poland decided to take Christian refugees from Syria (because they were discriminated and refused asylum by the French and other authorities)
      7. Ukrainians were allowed to work freely.
At the End of the Day Denmark takes People who were Denied Help For many Years in Europe because for various reasons( discrimination, oil and gas lobby etc.,...)
Imagine the other scenario - Poland behaves like Gee-Money - we close the border in 2014 for Ukrainians, don't rescue Christians from Syria...No...Always take the Side of those who are persecuted the Most!
Help them First! That's what Denmark is doing Now and that's why Denmark is going to be respected in the Baltic Sea region, Central and Eastern Europe. And some other bigger Countries no...

Denmark is preparing to receive over 100,000 refugees from Ukraine, or 5 times more than earlier estimated. Around 24,000 Ukrainian's (almost all being women and children) had already applied for residency in Denmark under the recent special law for Ukrainian refugees last month, with 2,000 of them also applying for asylum straight away, Immigration Minister Mattias Tesfaye said at a briefing.
“I’d like to stress that this doesn’t mean that 100,000 Ukrainians are guaranteed to live in Denmark in a few months. Nobody knows how many will end up coming here,” Tesfaye said.
More than $295 million have already been set aside to cover the expenses of taking in 20,000 Ukrainian refugees. Some of that money has already been diverted from the Danish development aid to Syria, Mali, Bangladesh and Burkina Faso, and with more Ukrainian refugees coming in, further funds could be taken from the foreign development budget.
“The primary aim of the government’s foreign development strategy is that refugees must be helped in near areas [to conflict, ed.]. Denmark has now actually become a near area, and a special responsibility follows that. There is therefore no contradiction between what our strategy states and what we are doing now,” Minister for Foreign Development Flemming Møller Mortensen said.
Perhaps I should add that if 100,000 Ukrainians eventually end up in Denmark, the number of refugees the Nordic country will take in will far outstrip that from both the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s and the 2015 refugee crisis.
Around 18,000 people from the former Yugoslavia came to Denmark as a result of the wars in the Balkans region, while 30,000 Syrian refugees including reunified family members came to Denmark following the 2015 crisis. So this would be by far the highest number of displaced refugees to come to Denmark since World War II, without comparison to anything we’ve seen since.
War-torn Syria and neighboring regions stand to lose $7.4 million due to the decision. Mali, which is plagued by terror groups, loses $10.4 million, and Bangladesh, one of the world’s poorest countries, will lose $14.8 million in Danish aid spending.
The reason for diverting money from the specific countries mentioned above, is because their governments deliberately are receiving military aid from Russia, with Mali being the latest example. Mali came with a cry for help, asking Denmark to help out with fighting terrorists, but when the Danish special forces arrived around two month ago, they got the message that they had to work side by side with Putin's Russian mercenaries (the Wagner Group), which Denmark took as an insult and refused to do.
At first the Danish defense department could not even believe that this demand came from the Mali government, but perhaps was planted by Russian hackers, so they asked Mali to either deny or confirm it, and there was a dispute over this, and Denmark told Mali that the special forces would leave instantly and return home if Mali confirmed it. So now the future of Mali is in the hands of Putin's Russian mercenaries and they have lost their aid in favor of Ukrainian refugees in need. Is this due to some sort of "racism", or a double standard from the Danish government ?, I personally do not think so.
