    One thing I realized while rereading the first arc was how close the Queens’ relationships with Bluestar was. They were often by Bluestar’s side when she was ill and were some of the only cats to be invited into her den (which was described as a great honor in the first arc)

    • @beedoesthings8037

      I wonder if it’s because of how hard her pregnancy was and the loss of her own kits that she feels such a kinship and close connection with the queens.

    • @spiritfang36aj47

      Additionally, it seemed many queens took on the role of queen as an almost permanent rank. As if they enjoyed motherhood so much they took on the role of constantly having kits so the clan would always have more warriors. If I was to ask you to name arc 1 queens, everyone would very easily come up with the names, Brindleface, Frostfur, Goldenflower, ect. whereas if asked about the queens in the later arcs, no queens (with the exception of Daisy) were ever constant enough to come to your mind. I enjoyed seeing the queens have different mates just for the pure purpose of bringing about the next generation of the clan. It made them feel like actual cats rather than just humans. I’m not saying cats can’t have forever mates who they have one litter with cause I enjoyed the family structure certain characters had too but I also enjoyed the cats who took on the role of queen almost permanently as it made the clan seem like a family within itself rather than so divided. It was clear each cat had a purpose and was also more realistic considering the story is about cats not a human family. Another little point, is in arc 1 the senior warriors seemed more like a defined rank of characters who constantly assisted and supported the deputy and leader and often had meetings with the leader whereas in the later arcs this kind of fades out.

      @@spiritfang36aj47 Definitely! Also the elders were dwindled down to just sitting in the elder’s den and saying one-liners about some Firestar reference or whatever. I feel like in the older books they too served more of a purpose and brought up facts we the readers didn’t know about the warriors world and even gave main characters advice (this was especially shown in Bluestar’s book)

      @@beedoesthings8037 I’d like to think that the queens had two jobs in the beginning arc. Which was to take care of the kits as well as any other cats who needed help. They did care for Yellowfang too after Fireheart was relieved of that duty. In general they were caretakers and protectors in their own way. They also were the main line of defense for the nursery as well as the elders. The queens were badass tbh. Warriors and mothers-I loved how the queens were originally written 🥹

    For the kits allowed out of camp stuff, it is true.
    In Bluestar’s Prophecy Sunfall bring Bluekit out of camp to take a look at the territory. Yes, she was already six moons (she gets her ceremony when she comes back from her trip), but still a kit. Perhaps kits specifically six moons can go out of camp? Nah, that’s odd.
    Not allowing kits out of camp could be something they started doing after reaching the lake territories, and were still unsure of what dangers there could be? It could have just sticked to them like that.
    Anyways, i feel like most of these errors/misunderstandings/changes are because the books are written by a team of people and not just 1, they could’ve had different ideas or just forgot/were not informed about certain things.

    • @BroKenYaKnow
      @BroKenYaKnow 2 месяца назад +1

      nah, this error is strictly super edition related. All the main series books have kits can't leave camp. Super editions are kinda noted as being "less canon". If you read Crookedstar's Promise, Bluestar's Prophecy, and Yellowfang's Secret (three super editions that take place at roughly the same time) they even manage to screw up the timeline there and just straight up change things that were established in the main series

  • @Thesladenator97
    @Thesladenator97 3 месяца назад +53

    I feel like a lot of this can be explained by the first arc not fleshing out the world and perhaps being just standalone. We didnt have a medicine cat POV so it was only when we did that they had to flesh that out. Fireheart wouldnt have been very aware of medicine cat culture being a warrior from outside the clan. Its only the second arc in which we go into full detail with the medicine cat ceremonies.
    It wasnt until the second arc where they had to actually solidify the customs. And also the other clans being mysterious is because the POV is from an outsider who wouldnt know the other cats. They were also in a period of war amongst each other from the time sunstar was leader. Id love to see some more full series books based on the time between dawn of the clans and the first arc. with a completely new host of characters and picking on a new leader from between thunderstar and redstar.

  • @mackenziec917
    @mackenziec917 3 месяца назад +40

    Personally, I think a lot of the customs that were mentioned in the first arc probably still happen, they just happen in the background. The first arc, this world was completely new to us, we had no idea what was going on or why things were done the way that they were. The reasons were then introduced to us through specifically mentioning them. After things are already established, though, it would just end up being a broken record of repeating same ceremonies and customs over and over.
    One example I have are the warrior vigils (I forget the exact name or if that’s it, but after they’re promoted from apprentice to warrior, the silent watch they keep over night). We see this happen in the first arc, but to my knowledge we don’t see it happen very often after then. I do believe however that in one of the later arcs, someone mentions having to keep their vigil later that night. So it never stopped happening, but only so much can be done with that before it becomes a boring plot point to go through, if it can even be called that. At least, that’s my take on it!
    I do agree that the moonstone visits did actually stop, at the very least they definitely stopped once they moved territories and had the moonpool instead. I wish that had been kept, I think that is a super interesting thing that they did and makes sense for the culture they have of holding Starclan as an authority.

    Bluestar explicitly mentions that she's apprenticing Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw early in Fire and Ice after Graystripe says none of Frostfur's kits are six moons. While it isn't impossible Frostfur had two litters close together it isn't really on-page either. Bluestar apprenticed Fernpaw and Ashpaw late so it is possible Brightpaw and Thornpaw were also apprenticed late, though this is also not on-page.

      i misremembered that the apprentice ceremony for cinderpaw and brackenpaw was immediately after that interaction with bluestar, for some reason i thought there was time between that, so i am less sure that they could be seperate litters, thanks for pointing that out! i do think that the wording "two of" her kits are almost ready and "none of frostfur's kits" instead of just "frostfur's kits" being too young could be implicative of multiple litters, but obviously that's super nitpicky and could mean nothing haha. if they are the same litter, i do think it's interesting that they decided to apprentice cinderpaw and brackenpaw early but not brightpaw and thornpaw

  • @MuddyPawsStudios
    @MuddyPawsStudios 3 месяца назад +53

    8:37 On this note about Frostfur’s kits, I am pretty sure they are from the same litter. They are Cinderkit, Brightkit, Thornkit, and Brackenkit, they were either born before Firepaw joined the clan or very soon after, I can’t remember. Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw are apprenticed before 6 moons because Bluestar wanted Fireheart and Greystripe to have apprentices.
    Also a cat pregnancy is 2 months, and I can’t imagine not taking a break between litters, so It typically is just one litter per mother.

I always just assumed that the writers actually started caring about parents in OotS, cause it seemed like Dovewing often went to Whitewing for support, and in TBC with how much Tigerstar and Dovewing worry and stand up for Shadowsight when he was trying to be believed. Though i think the closest I've really seen to an apprentice and their mother being very close is Frostpaw with Curlfeather or Bluepaw with Moonflower. If you read the books where their mothers passed it really affected how Bluepaw and Frostpaw's chapters seemed, and you could tell there was much more grief in their thoughts afterwards.

    I think Frostfur had one litter of four but just didn't thought that Brightkit and Thornkit weren't ready enough. But i could be totaly wrong becouse the books gave us two different age gaps between the four siblings.
    1. When they were taken by Clawface, all of them are the same age (visualy stated in Exile from Shadowclan comic)
    2. In the little comic at the end of Yellowfang's secret super edition. We can see that Cinderpaw is prepairing for her medicine cat ceremony and two of her mentioned siblings are still kits
    I personaly think all of them are the same age but yeah it's pretty confusing

    • @corinneeaglebridge
      @corinneeaglebridge 2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah I think so too! I think another thing in the first arc is that there are no definitive times set on like, when someone becomes an apprentice and then a warrior. (I.e. Sandstorm and Dustpelt becoming warriors later than Greystripe and Fireheart, as well as Brightpaw and Swiftpaw being “held back” by Bluestar in a way)
      So it could easily be “ok these two are ready for apprenticeship (as in, they’re a bit more mature and developed compared to the other two, they’re mentally and physically ready for it), the other two not quite yet” instead of every kit without fail being apprenticed at 6 moons. 6 moons is a MINIMUM age someone has to be before being apprenticed, not a requirement of when someone starts. (And also, there’s a big difference between “just turned 6 moons” and “6 moons, about to turn 7 moons” in terms of development)

    I actually think Cinderkit, Brackenkit, Thornkit and Brightkit were of the same litter in TPB! Bluestar admits Cinderkit and Brackenkit aren't old enough to begin training but are "otherwise ready". It makes me think Thornkit and Brightkit were late bloomers or something lol

    8:58 while this could imply that, I also think it could imply that sometimes kits form the same litter become apprenticed at different times if their mother doesn’t think they’re ready. However that would also imply that kits are being prepared and such while still in the nursery so 🤷 🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♂️

    I always prefer the vibes of the first series, they felt more like real feral cats rather than 4-legged furries lol. It seemed more mysterious, starclan really seemed more like deities than just another clan that lives in the sky (i never got why already dead cats can die again..like wtf?? whats the point of an afterlife then), they had more traditional customs, idk in more recent books it doesnt feel the same

    something that was common in the first couple of arcs that is a rarity now is the custom of sharing tongues. it was a really cool way of showing relationships between different cats even if they were just background characters. it brought a lot of life to the cats that we didn't get to see a whole lot of in dialogue or plot-driven elements. seems like the new writers have completely disregarded it and its disappointing, even though it was a small and somewhat insignificant piece of the older books.

    The deputy thing isn't really mentioned again because they never really appoint deputies after a long time again, it's always kind of instant.
    In ThunderClan, Bramblestar names Squilf near instantly after becoming leader, The Impostor's deputies are named pretty quick and Squils appoints Ivypool before even getting her nine lives

    I will always prefer the first arc. I completely agree with your point about it being more survival focused. It made them feel like actual cats surviving in a forest whereas in the later arcs, the characters felt more like humans than actual cats. I loved the stakes of arc 1. And oddly enjoyed character constantly dying, the clan struggling to survive under the pressures of changing seasons, the clans going to war over actual territory and hunting like cats actually would. While I do also enjoy the romance aspect of the novels, and do like knowing which cats parented which kits, I did enjoy certain queens having different mates and many different litters as again, it felt more realistic. The way I saw queens in the first arc were, cats who had either fallen in love with a forever mate and had kits or cats who specifically took on the responsibility of reproducing for the sake of the clan, so took on different mates to continue raising kits. It made the rank of queen seem like an actual defined rank. And the way queens in the first arc would help each other raise eachothers kits also showed the unity of the clan. This disappears later on, with the only exception being Daisy from what I remember. I also enjoyed the customs the clans followed as it just created a structure and routine to clan life while welcoming an audience to new traditions. It felt like we were exploring a new world and way of life, while the later arcs completely regress from a lot of the clans traditions, which again, has a more human feel which I personally dislike. In summery, I find arc 1 to be more natural and enjoyable while the later arcs although still good were a lot more superficial and kind of lost the magic that arc 1 had.

    One thing I noticed is that actually killing another cat becomes much more wrong as the arcs progress. Like in the first arc Redtail getting killed is a main part of the plot and I don't think anyone really mentions how messed up it is that someone killed him. Also there's times like at a gathering when Tigerclaw is telling the story about how he killed a cat(I cannot remember who I have not read the books in so long😭), it all seems much more normal. But then for example in the 4th(I think?) arc when Lionblaze kills Russetfur it seems way more shocking and there's cats talking about it and giving Lionblaze a ton of hate. And it's mentioned a lot more about how you should never kill another cat unless you absolutely have to. So yeah that's my input thanks for reading 😭

    Medicine cats are referred to as apprentices until the full medicine cat steps down i think? Alderheart is still considered jayfeathers apprentice, jay was considered leafpools until she was removed from her position
    I think a lot of the points mentioned are implied to be off screen just because of how much time passes in the first book? Into the wild passes through whats now about 3 books in an arc

  • @carriioneater
    @carriioneater 2 месяца назад

    I think in the later arcs the no kits outside of camp rule is probably due to the different territory, there may be more natural risks to kits in the lake territories compared to the forest territories like the new-fangled fox traps, badgers are a bigger risk, the lake is a risk, if they wander too far they could fall in and drown, etc etc so it makes a little bit of sense to me at least

    • @carriioneater

      and also in the old arcs Medicine cat apprentices stay apprentices until their mentors die, even after they get their full name from the leader/starclan, i think it's basically that they get accepted as a full medicine cat afterwards which is why they go to the moonstone

    With frostfur's kits I'm not sure if there is two separate litters. At least my interpretation was that Cinderpelt, Brackenfur, Brightheart, and Thornclaw were part of the same litter, and I think there was a lack of apprentices at the time, leading them to apprentice Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw a little early. And while I know the wiki isn't always a credible source, it also suggests that they are all one litter. The main text evidence I have is that it is said that frostfur's kits are stolen at one point by clawface and in the manga version of this scene, they are all relatively the same size. Considering that cat gestation is around 65 days , or two moons, I would think that they would have a large size difference to be two separate litters. However, I am also intrigued by your interpretation of this, as I think it would be interesting for there to be two litters by the same queen in the nursery.

    • @myamomx
      @myamomx  3 месяца назад +3

      yeah this was one of those things where it was mainly an assumption, but i think them being separate litters makes more sense. before brightpaw and thornpaw's apprentice ceremony it's mentioned that cinderpaw and brackenpaw were made apprentices a few moons before, which would mean (if they were all the same litter) cinder + bracken were apprenticed at least 2 moons early, which personally i think is unlikely considering how horrible thunderclan thought it was that brokenstar was making kits apprentices really early. i think a few moons age difference is entirely possible, but it's also purely speculation so there's a chance i'm way off haha :)

    • @katakatsuki3466
      @katakatsuki3466 3 месяца назад +2

      What always confused me about Cinderpaw and Brackenpaw was that they were canonically apprenticed early--considerably so. Bluestar defended it by saying that ThunderClan had few warriors/warriors-in-training, but it always stuck out to me because this was *right* after they helped ShadowClan get rid of Brokenstar, who was notorious for the same thing.
      They never say who father of Cinder, Bracken, Thorn, and Bright are, but the wiki says they're all Lionheart's kits? And that's the implication I got from the text too, at least, since all four of the cats are always referred to as siblings, and half-siblings almost never get that attention (Swiftpaw and Bramblekit are never mentioned as brothers, for example)
