HI EVERYBODY. I hope this OHIO gearbox recovery video will be interesting. I am happy to receive your comments and suggestions. Feel free to leave your suggestions here. THANKS SO MUCH !
@@dtrestoration8590 it just grieves me to see antique brass or copper get scratched up and painted or antique plastics they should never be the value goes up tenfold with original patina or shall we say green tarnish but sometimes barraso or buffing compound maybe the only way to preserve the piece when copper or brass or silver forms tarnish it protects the metal.
The side oil bolt should be unbolted when tou fill oil and when the oil will come out of. The hole then its full... Its a level actually just to know for the future... I liked that you kept the same bearings they where ok and from usa... Nice job over all
If your actually going to use the machine or sell it at useable you need to repack the bearings with grease otherwise the bearings will tear themselves apart with metal on metal rotating over and over again. I learned the hard way some bearings you replace others you can repack. I freed up a yz400 motor with kerosene but didn't know when I was younger it takes the grease out as well as the rust even in sealed bearings and I ran it without replacing the bearings and the motor grenaded after 15 mins of running it.
Overall I liked the video. You might not have shown it, but I was wondering if you measured the backlash on the worm gear before disassembly? I would have used a gasket on the head as that might be part of the backlash clearance.
The things under end caps and gear housing head are not gaskets, they are shims to set the worm gear centering, end play, and backlash. Under heavy loading this is critical. I worked 15 years for a company that manufactured worm gear drives.
I enjoyed watching the restoration and liked the color you picked but why did you leave off the nameplate? This is often the most historical part of any machine.
Painting without first using a primer wasn't expected that finish will not last long. Leave the casting marks alone, it's part of the old-timey charm these things have. keep in mind its an industrial unit meant to work hard rather than look good and that has a beauty all its own. Covering it up with body filler is a shame. Also not repacking those bearings is going to cause them to destroy themselves if you try to use this thing at any speed other then hand cranking it and even then I have doubts. Your approach was solid though I did enjoy watching you dismantle it although I wish you had a full complement of tools at your disposal but that's not your fault. Interesting video despite the caveats. For one the component isn't common and there's intrigue in that alone. Secondly, you were kind enough not to play music through the whole video, thank you for that. Lastly, you're out here doing "SOMETHING" which is more then most detractors can claim. If you stick with it and educate yourself on the process you got a shot. Good luck to you sir, you've earned a new sub.
You should always put the seals in the plate before bolting it on- the seal will self align the plate to the shaft, so it will be centered when you tighten the bolts.
I think your next restoration should be on it beat up hatchet you were using when you are tapping on the shaft. Also the hammer you are using with the big nail sticking out of the end of it, would benefit greatly
С чего вы взяли, что на этом понижающем редукторе червячного типа, этот маховик и цепная звездочка, от него, звездачкаа вообще мотоциклетная, маховик слишком мал по диаметру и тд...
Well certainly an interesting approach for making this gearbox useable again. But still plenty of points you might consider changing doing this the next time. Whats good: proper cleaning and slow and careful disassembly. Everything came back together as it should. Points i would consider doing better next time: paint job, seals out of a tube. All in all i probably couldnt have done it much better. Considering i have no garage and very few tools to handle it. Hope the gearbox will last you long time. Greetings and all the best to you.
I’m no expert in restoration but the pulley with the milled edge should not have been painted. The milled edge is there for grip when turning manually. Hand painting the letters in Ohio should have been done with a finer tipped brush so you can get right into the edges. Tapping in the bearings with a hammer is a definite no-no, you should have used a socket of similar size to tap it in evenly, you may have done more damage than good. Gaskets are better if made from a similar material as the old ones that were removed. When tightening nuts it is best to use the ring end of the spanner if possible to reduce the risk of rounding the edges. They are my only criticisms. Other than that the rest of the restoration looked pretty good, but not excellent.
The label treat with respect. Use gloves. Gasket. And paint of gears in parts unnecessary. I got that from watching all the other shows. Otherwise good job.
As a master machinist who has rebuilt dozens of these I have a few comments. 1. Even though you are running oil in the gearbox the bearings should be packed before installation. 2. Never use a Permatex type sealant to replace real gaskets, The gaskets are part and parcel of the positioning of the parts. 3. Always use a gear oil in the 80 to 90 weight range for these boxes. Motor oil doesn't cut it. 4. Where are the keys!!! Set screws will not hold the pulley and sprocket in place under load. Nice cosmetic job but I wonder about reliability in the long run.
Just a few questions, Did you replace new bearings? You should've removed and cleaned the makers plate? Did you measure the pre-load on any of the bearings (those gaskets perform the task of setting the clearance)? Overall not a bad restore, but you could've done better.
Good video, I watched it for curiosity and entertainment. Thanks for making it. I will not get weird and ask you all the silly questions you see in the comments. I just enjoy the video and please don't pick it apart. Make your own video or don't waste your time watching others. If you can't award a compliment don't comment. After all you watched a free video you most certainly got some knowledge from.
I wouldn't use the sharp edge of a large knife to break two mated surfaces. Where is your vice?. Nice gear set. Nice long sleeve shirt, wear a dark brown striped tie and silver cuff links next time.
Nice job young man! In the future, please do not seat a bearing with a hammer! You removed the bearings with a hammering action and then re-used the same bearings. If this job is for a show case, then fine, but should this gearbox work again, the bearings are going to fail soon.
Hay! I could break it down and I am sure I could clean it, I am just not sure I could put it back together again. LOL Beautiful work. the genius who thought that one up was just that. The human mind is so amazing.
Good one, I would have painted OHIO in a cream color or red. Its a standard worm gear box, but this particular one looks like it was used for a garage door application. You could use different pulleys or drive shafts to run different kinds of machines.
You might want to start with a good penetrent and let it soak for a few hours before disassembly (not WD-40..) Try a 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF.. Get yourself an impact driver also, if u don't have one... Btw.. nice job...

no suggestions except never sand antique brass bleach old plastics never sand or paint. powder coat is a okay on antiques
@@petepeterson4540 yes. thanks
In some of the last shots I noticed that that the female threats on the gearbox were dirty/painted.

You should make a chain driven bench top grinder out of it. that would be cool and as all thanks for the video's I can watch then forever .
I am more of an electrical item rebuilder than a mechanical item rebuilder. It’s a beautiful restoration. Now somebody tell me what this gearbox does
A good job but I would have removed the label on the top before painting.
thanks!
@@dtrestoration8590 Just bush some grease on it. Then the paint doesn't stick. Just wipe it all off. And I wouldn't paint the pulleys and sprocket.
Love hearing the birds! Also seeing an old piece of machinery restored, wish more people would do this.
thanks very much

Excellent.

good color and good work
I like the gear oil pouring trick. Can't say I would have bothered putting filler in after mold line removal. Nice looking resto.
thank you so much! Do you have any suggestions for me in the next video?

Well Done ! But You need Sandblasting Maschine!
Buy some sockets, a rubber mallet, and a sandblaster.

A waste of time by not changing the bearings, and you never paint the inside of V groove of sheaves or pullies.
А почему не показали что за это устройство для чего она и как роботает?
Нет цепи, чтобы начать работу и приводного ремня.. Возможно это часть от насоса или от дробилки зерна.

Please wear gloves, especially when cleaning or working with chemicals! You only have those two hands!
be quiet
Yeah because all manual workers for centuries who didn't wear gloves all lost there hands.
Hi DT,
how do you treat which parts?
Above all, I'm impressed how the black screws became bright (silvery).
Very nice work, but, you should also brush up your hammer / ax tool, it is urgently needed.
