First, let me say you have become my favorite RUclips channel while I have been researching some new gear. I'm turning 40 very soon and my wife is giving me a little play money. I was convinced I wanted the Kemper, but after watching a ton of your videos, I'm going for the HX stomp. You have a fantastic ear for tone, and I'm going to buy a few of your IR's sir. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Just got my Stomp XL and using your video to get started building my electric platform for church.👍 I’ve watched your channel before but never subscribed so I took care of doing that today.
Great explanation! Really easy to understand, about to delve back into the world of modelling. I’m 95% using a real amp but need something for the 5% feels like this would be the best all round bang for your buck!
Until today, this is the best explanation video about hx stomp overall controls for modelling Amps and understanding more subtle feeling for the amp usages. Thank you sir !
I know I've said before, but I've been using your Matchless CH 1 A preset (from the real amps pack) exclusively since March. I use external drives for all levels of gain. It's been recorded on all the virtual church services that I've done from home and even an instrumental song I'm working on. I can't use my actual amps at home with the kids but honestly I'm not missing them. Keep it up and I love this in depth look into creating good tones!
Thank you so much for explaining this controls of the Hx stomp for us. I would like to see the same video explanation just in this case for IRS controls in the Hx stomp.
I've been having problems trying to dial in a good sound with ownhammer's IRs. Don't know why but they sound so bassy and fizzy at the same time, I almost always have to use the high cut from the IR block between 8k and 6k. But ever since I downloaded your free preset with IR included I can leave the IR as it is and dial in the amp from there without the need of an extra EQ. What I'm saying is, your IR rocks 😂, even for high gain (I'm using it for cleans, crunch and high gain and it works for all of them).
@@MichaelWWestbrook Yes!, I edited my comment so much before posting it that I forgot to say that, but as soon as I get a new job I'll definitely will be getting some stuff from your store 👌🏼
It's refreshing to see relevant content like this. I was close to sending my hx stomp back bc I couldn't figure out all the nonsense that comes with this pedal. For those of us that are old and used to turning a few knobs on a pedal this thing is just way TOO MUCH! So having someone breakdown this confusing crap makes me want to keep messing with it.
@@ChristIsKing270 I have a full time job and two children. It’s more that I’m willing to learn new things, and you’re apparently not. That’s ok, but don’t blame the machine.
@joeltunnah are you legally blind and responsible for the lives of 50 other people? Not counting your wife and 3 kids? Don't compare lives dude. The thing is complicated and umless you're a techy person most people don't have the time. You probably believe everyone is or should be a techy person.
I find all your videos, particularly this one, very useful as I'm a new HX Stomp owner. I listen primarily through Monitoring Headphones. I'm trying to understand and solve a characteristic of many of the Presets that you mentioned in this and several of your other videos. How to get a more, "Present, Punchier, Immediate, Up Front, In Your Face" kind of sound? In this video, you mentioned Sag, Bias, and BiasX. I'll have to try those settings. I've been able to get some improvement by lowering the Reverb in the Mix etting. In one of your videos, you wondered how certain frequencies might be the cause. Maybe the Mic position is also involved. I'm not sure if it's one or two settings I need to look at, or if its a half dozen. It would be great if you could make a video specifically focusing on how to get a more immediate, punchier sound out of the HX Stomp. To me, the Presets often sound weak and distant, even when changing the Volume on the unit. I'm sure a lot of HX Stomp users would benefit from such a video. Do other LIne 6 products also have this kind of "lack of immediacy" in their Presets? My old Boss GT-6 is really "present" and I love that about it. Thanks
Using IR’s gives me an immediately better starting point in this regard. Try adjusting the Bias X control down (I think it’s lower values) for a stronger attack or what might feel faster and more immediate.
Good video Michael. I like some of the stock cabs in L6HX. However one frustration I have had with the HX cabs is they are extremely low in level. When I use third party IR's the levels are much higher, tones are better quality.
Don’t know if anyone else does this but you can use a looper to speed up the process to find tones. Loop a chord or lead lines etc and then you can edit away
One thing I don't understand is where do you place the amp and cab within the signal chain? I've seen people put it at the beginning, the middle and the end... What is the best option?
It really depends on what you are going for. The most common way I assume would be to put them in order of a typical GTR/Pedal/Amp set up Input>Effects>Amp>Cab or with an effects loop effects>amp>effects (delay/verb)>cab
Could you please make your Stomp presets for Helix? It sounds so much like a Real tube amp! I would be so happy to purchase presets from you! I love my Helix but never managed to find a Blues (style you need to play with touch and dynamic) preset that feels you play with a tube amp! For me it always feels to much compress...i don't get the same touch, the same feeling when i play!!! 😤
Do you ever have tuning stability issues? When re-stringing your guitar, try not to let the string overlap itself around the pole.. instead, try to get 3 windings that stack on eachother.
@@MichaelWWestbrook I hear you brother. It can be difficult to judge that. A trick i learned is run the string through the pole peice all the way until it lays flat on the fretboard. Then, grab the string around the 12th fret and lift it about the same height as your index finger if it was on the board sticking straight up.. this is about the amount of string you want to wind.. another trick is to, hold down with as much pressure as you can in front of the nut around the 1st or 2nd fret and wind the peg while keeping that pressure. This will allow the pole to only wind whats between it and the nut and the pressure will keep the string tight without coming loose around the pole once you have a wrap on it.. i hope this wasn't to confusing lol. I enjoyed the vid! Keep em coming! 👌
I have little question. It is normal that when im playing with backing track from YT (Helix LT connected as USB Interface), i have to turn down backing track volume to 20-30% because my guitar is very quiet? Is any way to fix it?
Do you find that you need to adjust the headroom of the amp model to accept external pedals? What would be the best way to do that? Channel volume? Great videos and great IRs. Have really enjoyed them.
I haven’t felt the need to adjust for headroom any differently than I would setting up a normal amp sound. Channel Volume only affects overall volume so it’s not going to change the headroom. If I felt I needed more head room (with overdrive/cleaness) I’d try the gain, master volume, and bias first. Then possibly adjust the sag and Bias X if I felt things were getting compressed by the increased input of other pedals.
One chord is worth a thousand words here. The long detailed descriptions could have been 1 or 2 short sentences followed by hitting a note and sliding the control so we can hear the difference.
Unfortunately because of RUclips compression some of these wouldn’t be heard very much. It’s really all about experimenting yourself and hearing the difference so you dial in things to your own taste
@@MichaelWWestbrook hahaha no. I wasn't sure if my comment would be first. I've been watching your videos for awhile. Part of the reason I jusy picked up an HX stomp. Good s#@$ man, keep it up

Not really, but usually I try to not let them over lap as well but sometimes it happens if it don’t estimate the length well.
