    i dont know here's a bunch of observations presented in a format that you freakin jokers will actually click on
    I didn't actually intend on taking the stance that I did on it

      To me, the real villain is Alana. Immediately after Connor's suicide is announced, she tells the audience that she didn't know him. By the end of the beat, she was telling people that Connor was her dearest friend because she needs the attention. She bullies Evan into continuing the Connor Project, panicking because he wants it to stop, but if it stops then she'll stop getting attention.
      Then she figures out that Evan and Connor barely knew each other, and she acts like Evan was doing it for the attention. Projecting much, Alana?
      I have seen no one, not in the play, not in reviews of the play, anywhere, say anything about this. She is easily my least favorite character in the story. Evan told a kind, awkward lie to comfort a grieving mother, and it spiraled out of control. She actively stopped him from ending the spiral, and she did it because she wanted attention. Boo.

  • @blinkfilms1
    @blinkfilms1 6 лет назад +673

    I always thought Evan killed himself, or at least tried to, at the end of the musical. Here's my reasoning:
    In Good for You, Evan had just actively lied to everyone he knew about being friends with a guy who killed himself. His actual friend has started hating him because he was taking the spotlight, his other friends only liked him because of the lie, his /girlfriend/ only likes him because of the lie, his mom is mad at him because of the lie, etc, etc. We hear how out of control Evan feels. He wants out.
    Then, Words Fail. This whole song sounds a lot like a suicide note. Evan addresses the people his lie has directly affected, apologizing but also reiterating how wrong his actions were. Late in the song, he sings, "'Cause what if everyone saw? What if everyone knew? Would they like what they saw? Or would they hate it too?" implying how much he hates himself for what he's done. The song ends on the lines "All I ever do is run, So how do I step in, Step into the sun?" which could be taken to mean he was asking for help in taking the blame for his actions, or he chose to fade back into the background, since that was all he knew how to do.
    So Big, So Small is a mother trying to make amends with her wayward son. Heidi talks about how lonely she felt when her husband left her and Evan, and how incapable she feels as a mother. She gives Evan the sentiment that she still loves him and is trying to do her best, but this could also be taken the wrong way. Evan could hear this and realize he was too much of a burden, helping make the decision he faced even easier. Instead of staying and causing her more heartbreak, he could leave her, so that she can have an easier and happier life in the long run.
    Finally, the Finale, For Forever (Reprise). It starts out with a happy letter from Evan to Evan, the thing that got him into this whole mess in the first place. These could be the thoughts running through his head, him facing the music and dealing, accepting himself. However, these could be weak attempts at making everything better. Evan couldn't be in as good of a headspace as it sounds. He gets worked up over sweaty hands; the mass amounts of hate directed at him after he came clean would not be good for his mind. Depression and anxiety like Evan's don't just go away. He already tried to commit suicide once, (which he lied about in the first For Forever so we have that parallel) which means that trying again wouldn't be too crazy of an outcome.
    We hear an ensemble singing the chorus of For Forever, what Evan sang when he referenced being at the top of the tree in what he planned to be his last moments. Then, it is only Evan, singing "All I see is sky for forever". This is what drove it home for me. The last time he sang those lines we felt bad for him because he was recounting a suicide attempt, changing it into the lie that would change his life. The chorus sung in the finale is recounting Evan's suicide attempt, except that instead of getting up and going to a hospital, "All he sees is sky for forever". I take this to mean that he does the same thing again, this time successfully.
    Idk just a theory, don't get mad at me. I figure the show is art and can be interpreted different ways.

      @lyamelmoreta6187 6 лет назад +115

      It's a solid interpretation, and a completely change of perspective. But i like to stay on the more positive side, how Evan starts the letter in the finale always stuck with me "Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be a good day because today at least you are you, and that's enough". Evan started the lie because he wanted to help the Murphys but he got so attached with the idea of pretending to be somebody else, somebody better, since Waving through a window we know that Evan is in conflict with his fear of being out there and judged, and the inherent human need of being hear and being part of a group.
      So the thought of Evan finally accepting himself unapologetically is so great to me. Of course his depression and social anxiety doesn't just disappear, but now he has the will to keep fighting. And i think that's the "light" that the musical keeps referring to.
      But your interpretation is a completely new way to see all this!! Thanks for sharing it

    to break in a glove was such an important song for Larry specifically.
    Larry really really did care about his son. An important mediphore of this song, was that you sometimes have to do the hard thing, and Larry didn't,,, specifically for his son. He didn't try hard enough to help Connor, and he regrets it. The fandom has a really negative feeling toward Larry and I hATE IT
    Larry Murphy did his best, but he had no idea what he was supposed to do. And to break in a glove was an example of that. He knew how to break in a baseball glove, but he really didn't know how to help his son.
    Sorry this was just a rant because I have very strong feelings about Larry Murphy and how the fandom has an absolutely unfair hatred for him

    • @sketchers3115
      @sketchers3115 4 года назад +8

      I feel like that song is irrelevant. Yeah the song is about Larry and his relationship with his son but only the 1st verse is about connor. The rest is literally about how to break in a glove. There is a cut song called "the bedroom down the hall" which is about the mam talking about connor when he was young and how they tried to deal with him. I think that song would've been better as it tells us a different side of connor (like the familys experience with him) and the whole song is relevant to him, not just a verse

    To break in a glove is one of my favorite songs in the musical, its such a complex song. We can see how Cynthia and Zoey deal with their grief, but Larry is more subtle. Throughout the song, Larry is venting about Connors suicide- not just talking about baseball gloves.
    “It just takes a little patience
    It takes a little time
    A little perseverance
    And a little uphill climb
    You might not think it's worth it
    You might begin to doubt
    But you can't take any shortcuts
    You gotta stick it out
    And it's the hard way
    But it's the right way
    The right way... to break in a glove”
    All these things he’s saying about baseball mitts are all things he wasn’t willing to give Connor, and he’s realized this. He knows he’s messed up and it seems like he’s almost trying to redeem himself by being there for Evan. It really gives Larry a lot more to his character other than ‘shitty dad’. My one wish is that Cynthia was given more depths, because there is so much to work with there.
    Aaaghh i just have so many feelings abt this song sorry haha

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that (I mean, I also have ships), but I don't really see a lot of actual appreciation for the show. Like the show's message that everyone matters and different people's interpretation of it (like how words fail might be Evan's suicide letter) and just how inspirational the whole musical is as a whole. I'm not trying to call out the fandom or any ships or something like that, I just think the fandom needs to get over useless drama like ships and just appreciate the damn musical.

    If it had gotten out into the world that Evan had lied about everything, it would be more than likely that he would kill himself as a result - he's attempted before the start of the show, Words Fail sounds like a suicide note, he knows that he can't go anywhere or do anything.
    However, the Murphys saw the note that they thought was Connor’s suicide note but was actually Evan’s letter. Considering how the letter is worded such that it sounds convincingly like a suicide note, and Evan told them that he wrote it as a therapy assignment... what if they kept his lies secret because they wanted to preserve his life? Yes, they definitely wouldn’t like him after everything he did, and justifiably so, but I doubt they wanted to drive him to suicide and possibly carry that blame, ESPECIALLY since they were currently being torn apart online and continually being blamed for Connor’s suicide.

    One thing that is also wrong with DEH is how long Evan had his cast on. If he broke his arm in end of May or early June, he either wouldn’t have his cast on when school started or he’d get it off soon after. I believe he got it off 3 weeks after school started (or something like that) so this would mean that Evan had his cast on for around 3.5/4 months when the average bone takes about six weeks to heal.
    I’m not in any way hating on DEH; I was actually writing a fanfiction about it when I figured this out. I love Dear Evan Hansen and it’s my favorite musical. Don’t come for me.

    Hi!! I just wanted to clear something up or see if you have an opinion about this-- I saw the show back in March and have watched/listened to many interviews with the cast (mainly the Theater People podcast episode with Rachel Bay Jones) that the word about Evan's lie does not get out the rest of the world. While it is unclear in the Wikipedia summary and the cast album, the show ends with Evan and Zoe talking about how their lives are somewhat back to normal one year later, as Evan in taking a gap year and cracks jokes about working at Pottery Barn and Zoe is in her senior year of high school. They meet up in the orchard built in Connor's memory after the whole lie during For Forever in Act 1, and the Finale just brings around the point that all is well with the world and references For Forever to tie those ends together. At this point, the Connor Project still exists but for different reasons than the popularity of Evan's friends and town but for suicide awareness. The only people who know Evan was lying are the Alana, Jared, Heidi, and the Murphys (or, the cast of the show. This kind of means that this lie only affects these people by them being the only ones represented on stage). The very end of the show visually shows that Alana and Jared are still Evan's friends and won't tell his secret to the world, the Murphys decide to keep it, and Heidi wouldn't subject her son to be hated by the world. Is this unrealistic? Absolutely. But this musical shows that Evan's life will continue on without his secret being known.
    This is just was my thought process and knowledge from seeing the show tells me. Not stating as fact, just an opinion :)

    At this point, I feel like you just don't like parent songs. Like To Break in a Glove was very important, it showed that Larry saw that he knew what he was doing was wrong but he was admitting that he should have done more for Connor. Also from the bmc video, the Pants Song was very important because it shows that Mr.Heere was trying to be a good parent and the fact that he was trying to improve himself and he was reaching out to Michael for help. All in all, parent songs are important, parents are important, and their songs matter. Even if their characters aren't as flushed out since the show is focusing on other people they matter and exsist. Parents exsist.

    OMG! “How to Break in a Glove” is a key song, not so much about Evan & Connor’s Dad bonding. It’s about the rigidity of Connor’s Dad & how one can see that his attitude of doing things “right” didn’t help his son (or his family). His hard lines only pushed his son farther away and left him feeling trapped and worthless because he couldn’t do things “right.” It drove the mental illness, the depression to the point Connor felt completely hopeless.

    I felt like the last part of Break in a Glove where he says "Or you're just trying to do what's best for a kid who's lost control" makes it worth it because it's the father countering his thoughts in Requiem where he felt the suicide was selfish because he felt he did everything right. He's realizing he parented the easy way, and that the distance led to the suicide of Connor.

    Dear Evan Hansen is one of the most moving shows I’ve ever seen (iiin a bootleg; I’m not rich; don’t hate me). So now I’m gonna follow along w/ the video with my response bc I’m a nerd.
    I agree with the falling in the forest thing. One of my friends who didn’t know the context thought it was cringey but after finding out the context it’s amazingly placed and good.
    Requiem was what I listened to when my grandma passed bc it’s confusing and complex and the first human death of anyone near me.
    Yeah lol the fact that it was successful I agree.
    Break in a glove made me confused bc good character development and bonding; from an objective standpoint, it’s not that important. Also is this dads are normally like???
    Good for you is amazing.
    Words fail is heartbreaking bc I wanted to be mad at Evan like why and how could you do that to a grieving family but also,,, he’s so genuinely upsetted by his actions that I can’t stay mad. Which makes me need a hug. Brb.
    K anyways so big/so small some lines almost made me laugh (before I listened to it) but listening to it oh my gosh my heart; my soul;
    Yeah she seemed a littttlllle out of it in the bootleg, I thought that was just the character though
    OK THE WORLDS RESPONSE TO EVAN OUCH OUCH OUCH I THOUGHT OF THAT TOO THE POOR GUY SOMEONE PROTEC HIM! I WANT TO HATE HIM BUT HES ALSO SO WONDERFUL AND NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED
    Great comet should have won; but DEH is amazing
    Broadway pop can get out (except DEH)

      Maybe I looked at this the wrong way, but I kinda thought that break in a glove was a way to finally give some clarity into the way Larry's was acting the whole time. I mean he obviously got some time during requiem, but I felt like he still came off kinda harsh in that and break in a glove was kinda the last piece needed to understand Larry better. (This next thing is kinda something based on the video, not so much your comment, but I figured I might as well keep going while I was at it) I think Even is kinda an after though in the song, this is Larry song's no one else's

    3:06 not sure if I'm just dense to this being a joke, but I believe it's a metaphor for Evan as he stops before he even makes a mistake, or does something that could lead to it. In this sense, like slamming on the brakes to stop a crash before the car has even started.

    Gosh, I just wish someone appreciated To Break in A Glove like me lol. From someone who has Dad issues, it means so much and adds to Evan’s character. it shows Evan’s need for a father figure. No one has been there to teach him the generic stuff that people take for granted. And that’s including doing the right thing. I also think that it’s a healing song for Michael. Because he always thought he was a day late and a dollar short with his son, but if he helps his son’s “friend” then he is finally doing the right thing for his son/family. The song in its simplicity is genius for the two characters that both have issues with showing there real emotions. Both Michael and Evan tip toe around what they are saying with the metaphor.

I mean this is not the only musical to do this (look at things like bmc and heathers) but I'm just uncomfortable of being the punchline? Like the "lmao imagine if we were gay" seems to always just kinda... be a joke?
      But if you don't mind it that's super cool !!!

    • @tammikilpi6993
      @tammikilpi6993 6 лет назад +21

      Ella Volk You're right! But also I feel like musicals aren't for lgbt people? (I'm not english so my wording might be off here) I don't mean that musicals are like... supposed to cater for queer kids only. But even tho theatre is considered feminine and "gay", I don't feel like most more mainstream musicals are very like... gay friendly? Like looking between the cishet representation and queer is almost depressing
      I know we won't have good mainstream representation in a while but I wish that this industry tried to work more towards it and didn't turn gay people into punchlines. I think there's a difference in if a queer joke is like... for queer people or of them? Like for example I feel Brooklyn 99 is a show that has amazing gay jokes that are actually meant for gay people, but then the whole "I love my dead gay son" song in heathers feels like a joke for straight people abt gay kids?
      I feel like I'm rambling and I definetely don't want to sound like I think you're wrong! I love musicals and I think gay jokes can be really funny, and interpreting characters as gay is good. I just wish they were more for us and less about us if that makes sense?

    ya see I can appreciate to break in a glove. I mean it has a pretty good message behind it especially in terms of recovering from mental illness (depression, anxiety stuff like that) it talks about how "its the hard way but the right way" meaning all the work will pay off opposed to trying to take the easy way out and relapsing and having to start over. they say how it wont be easy, at takes a little bit of practice and a little bit of time. if you just kinda ignore larry as a character and focus more on the meaning and what it represents, its a really powerful song about recovery

    On the cars thing:
    -Most cars are automatic, meaning you twist the key, slam on the accelerator and away you zoom (this was invented because driving manuals was deemed too hard for the average american, by the way)
    -Manual cars are more complicated because they involve a clutch and manual gear change; you have to change gears because the car won't do it for you (I think this is the hard bit).
    -Now I've never driven an automatic because they're absolute shite, so I can't say that you don't have to hold the brake down to start, but I'm fairly sure that automatics also have hand breaks so no that shouldn't be necessary.
    -On a manual, if you hold down the break while trying to change gears, the engine might stall and your car could break.
    -Fairly certain on automatics, the tyres can go bust if you accelerate and hold the breaks at the same time.
    -I have no clue what kind of voodoo shit your car's on, but you might wanna get it checked
    ~Sincerely, a terrible engineering student (cut me some slack I'm specialising in robotics)

    Can I just point out how wonderfully hilarious it is that he had clips of Will Roland when he was talking about how different this musical would have been if Evan went with the angle of Connor being into his sister... Cause that is pretty iconic.

    surprised you didn't sin that connor never got any form of good attributes that werent made up even though its obvoius he was only acting out because of depression. There was a song that was cut that featured his mum talking about him being good as a kid and spiralling as his depression grew, but that song being cut meant that you see the character; the teenager who killed himself because of a lack of support and being misunderstood by his family; as a bully. Yes, he wasn't a great character, but even a scene where he has some sort of redemption would make the entire musical feel less unaccepting of depression and the things that depressed people do, like isolation and acting out #helpconnormurphy

    I LOVE TO BREAK IN A GLOVE I FEEL LIKE I'M THE ONLY ONE
    It's not about Evan. It's sort of about his relationship with Larry- it's more about Larry coming to terms with shaping the people in his life. Honestly it was my favorite part of the show when I saw it.

    The car I drive sometimes (I can’t drive by myself yet) lets you start the car without have the brake on it, but in order for you to get it out of park, you have to have your foot on the brake.

    You do not have to put your foot on the break before turning the key, however, in order to shift which gear you are in you need to put your foot on the break, this is only if the car is an automatic which has this safety feature. Most cars I've driven have had this, cars before this safety feature were added and some new models and manual cars have it where you must break before turning the key otherwise the car will move forward. The lyricist may have only driven cars with this feature, the most likely since Evan is a teenager this is probably the only type of car he has ever driven, thus woulf be another way to show that he has anxiety.

    That's how automatic cars work but manual/stick shift cars require you to press the clutch in and have no use for the brake unless actually slowing down or other practical uses such as on a hill.

    Here's the thing about the ending, you mentioned you watched the bootleg so you would have seen the full scene play out. I don't know if you caught it but Evan does say something to Zoe along the lines of "thank you for not telling everyone what I did" so Evan's life wasn't bombarded by death threats from strangers online because no one knew. And the Murphy family probably stopped getting death threats too because of the fast-acting nature of the internet.

    Actually in the very end scene Evan and Zoiey meet up again. This is where Zoiey proceeds to key the audience into the fact that the Murphy's never told anyone that Evan was a phony.

    I am an Alto/Baritone. I am a 15yo girl. I think I can sing this song. My pitch doesn't match PERFECTLY with Ben Platt's, but I think I do an OK job, which is more than I can say for any other song I've ever sung.
