Wow! So good to see DR again! And so many wonderful friends. Glad to see the videos covering so much about how DR works, where DR plans to go and what you have accomplished.
I so enjoyed standing around, listening to lectures for HOURS and HOURS while I was at DR! This video is so reminiscent of exactly what I experienced there. It was like they couldn't get enough discussing, organizing & debating about things! I kept thinking to myself... are we done yet... are we done yet... Fuck! Are we finally done yet!!!!!????? Can we LEAVE NOW?!!!!

You might get some building ideas from the series 'Living Big in a Tiny House' with Bryce Langston in New Zealand. One of his best interviews is with a an architect or I.D. and her elderly mother. Her home was surrounded by kangaroos during the video. He has videos of traveling through the USA and Canada. Best Wishes for 2020
I really enjoyed hearing about all, but it would have been helpful to be able to see what everyone was talking about. For instance when Ted was telling us about Iron Weed, would love to have “seen” the things he was telling us about. Thanks for all the information, very much appreciated.

Hey there. I have lived at Dancing Rabbit for 2 years. Yep, treating animals with respect is also something that is talked about much here. We do have people that raise chickens etc. as a food source, but they are pasture raised and treated as humanely as possible.
Hey, Briana, I think I have you as a friend on FB already. (Share a Fb group maybe) Yes, you can certainly live here as a vegan. We don't have as many vegans living her right now, but that shifts from time to time as new people move here etc. We are growing more and more of our own veggies and fruits. We are also have one grocery store that is 2 miles away and a bigger town with many stores 20 minutes away, so though we are rural, we are not isolated.

Sadly, no. We do have cold winters. We do have lots of apple and pear trees. We just planted more peach and plum trees. I plan to plant some hazelnut, walnut, pecans and chestnuts next year. I am also looking into getting a grant for a large greenhouse that we could share. Then we could potentially experiment with things we would not ordinarily be able to grow here.
I would love to visit very soon , where and why do you have to take on line course to do anything ,I was born to live that way .

have you a background that your founders came from or are inspired by the Findhorn Foundation in northern Scotland? sounds so similar, everything. Findhorn is now about 50 years young and has inspired many smaller communities around the world.
Thanks for your question Rameesh! Findhorn is certainly an inspiring model, but while they are both intentional communities there is no direct connection between Dancing Rabbit and Findhorn or their founders.

The easiest way to get a taste of our village is to attend a free public tour, which we offer on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month during the warm season (April-October). The Saturday tour begins at 1pm and lasts around 2 hours. Tours are open to anyone, and folks can contribute gratitude donations after the tour.
If you are seriously interested in living at Dancing Rabbit we invite you to apply for a visitor program, which you can attend for 2 or 3 weeks. The visitor program is a chance to learn in-depth about how we do things here at Dancing Rabbit, and experience what our life is like on a day-to-day basis. If you have membership interest, this is the best route for you. You can find more information and request an application for the visitor program at: www.dancingrabbit.org/visit/
You may also want to look into spending a night (or a few) at the Milkweed Mercantile- the bed & breakfast here at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. The Milkweed Mercantile offers comfortable accommodations and delicious meals, all in a strawbale building powered by solar and wind. They are open for business year round. I was wondering how you got that much land and how much such a big piece of land has to cost... Because I have been working on an ecovillage system as well that I want to bring to live once I have finished university but I am afraid that I won't find any land big enough that will be able to hold enough space for enough people and that I will be able to pay (not just me of course, with other people as well).

so many old people on the tour. i would expect more traveler/crusty types. that's not a bad thing. most things i like only old people take interest in.
Every tour group is different. We run tours twice a month for whoever shows up, lots of tours during Open House once a year, and sometimes outside of those. If one group seems to be of all one age range or lacks diversity in other ways, it could be that some of these people came as a group. I think most tour groups are pretty diverse.
Older people have had the top jobs, big houses, country club memberships, and realise that there is a better, simpler way of living out there. They are the wise people who need to educate the younger generation

Hey Amy. Currently, we have high school kids living here that get picked up by the public school bus and do the usual thing. We do have a lot of kids that are 10 and younger though, and there are several parents that have put together a "Home School Co-0p". Basically, they are all home schooled and now will be rotating to different homes as a group and learning together from the various parents. Some have been teachers before they moved here.
Is their an annual fee you all pay? Or is it free to live their I understand paying for your own things but was wondering is anyone person or group making money off of everyone living their?
Members pay 2% of their income to support our non-profit. There is no buy-in fee.
I'm surprised you tied back into the grid. Do you feel it will be impossible for a community of the size you hope for to be dependent solely on renewable energy at this time?
Hi Thomas, we believe it is possible for us to rely on renewable energy at any size. We are producing more energy than we use at this time, so we are actually exporting renewable energy to the local grid.

I like your response. Suggesting you aren't necessarily "against" it, just abiding by the law. Very cool. Looks like Missouri needs some Law reform to join the rest of the states. Hey there. I have lived at Dancing Rabbit for about 2 years now. I am on the "Visitor Team" as well as some other committees here. One of my personal focuses is village growth. I can tell you that we have had a lot of conversations here as to how we might expand our ethnic diversity. We currently have one guy here from Spain and a woman from Italy, but other than that not so much diversity ethnically. We are open to ideas as to how we may improve this. My personal hope is that in making sure that we promote to ALL people who would be interested in this lifestyle, and that we express how welcome EVERYONE is, that we will be creating the right variables for this to happen. We are located in rural Missouri though, and some of us wonder how many ethnic minorities would want to move here with us, (even if we are awesome), still being surrounded by a predominantly white culture in the surrounding towns. My hope is that after a few people (with some tint to their skin) move here, it will make it much easier for others to feel more comfortable moving here also.

Context: Our contractor friend offered discounted services, which he was paid for. He "lost money" by not charging market rates, but all his costs were covered AND he was paid for his time as well...simply at a lower rate which he offered us. ALSO over the years many of us have helped him on other projects of his, either as volunteers during demolition or grunt labor when his usual guys weren't available. Still good friends to this day!

As an anarchist, I'm enthusiastic about what looks to be a democratic, consensus driven effort here, but I gotta ask, (nitpicky though it may be) why does Tony feel the need to stand above a small gathering to communicate to them? Do you process themes of authority and oppression together, and do you have racial diversity as well?
Tony is standing so that people in back of the group can see his face while he's talking. We do have themes of authority here, in the sense that we have a village council and other decision-making bodies. At the moment, nearly all the people living here are white; enhancing diversity of all kinds is one of our primary goals.
But as a true anarchist, you would destroy them due to their organization, governing rules & capitalist lifestyle.

The mission statement should be something like: formation or growth of city-independent community able to function regardless of cycles of national economy, a network of people good to know especially during emergencies. Unity of purpose: investment in the future of our people. An investment as an asset always available, making an individual stronger if connected with a group allowing one to know more, have more and be able to do more than by himself. Participation and individual contribution should be thought of as investment into one's own self-interest first but also that of his people who can be of help in the future. The objective should be the people rather than the environment.
I think you could grow your numbers faster if you would clarify and normalize your mission statement to the general public. Right now, I must say, your current mission statement of Environmentalism is off-putting especially to the wider public and in particular to Christians I would think. I hear Environmentalist tenets about "Reducing" (!) consumption of electricity or this or that. Reducing not increasing? Really? This Eco themes is what I think alienates larger "audience". I think your phase 2 should be to concentrate on the guiding ideology. We are building homes and farms. For what? For "Eco-Friendliness"! I think that sounds way too cookie to an average pedestrian. Instead of saying "we don't use motor vehicles in order to reduce 'affect' on the environment", I'd say "we don't use motor vehicles out of practical considerations". THAT still sounds too "cult-ish", so instead of de-phasing motor transportation, I would say "we can use cars but the group must have a back-up transportation", horse carriages and rickshaws ha ha. Lastly, I think Christianity and Environmentalism are mutually exclusive
Why would environmentalism be off putting to Christians? I was born and raised Christian and I am an advocate of caring for The Earth as she takes care of us with great abundance. That is Christian mission, and a human mission as well.
