6:52 - is a PERFECT example of why scroll bars should NOT disappear! You had to hunt to grab the bar. And if you don't move the mouse in that area you don't know if there are more options. VERY annoying!

@@Chris.Brisson perhaps they will not. The distro's software fillment is amazing, but I'm afraid 99% of this is total junk (including the OS itself). It is suitable for some simple tasks, but I doubt anyone built his/her workflow completely relying on this OS and software. It goes with no warranty and no support, and some day or other one will face a problem that will require too much time to solve, which is unacceptable in serious projects with tight time frame. Unlike paid software, which often built/modified/fixed at customer's request and in definite time frame, the FOSS is often built on enthusiasm and for developer's needs. If you don't like it - don't use it, that's what they usually say when you try to improve their software. This is unacceptable IMO

Excellent video. I use Kdenlive on my Windows machines sometimes. Blender is unparalleled. Inkscape is used for creating so many web banners and icons. It's nearly usable as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator. GIMP, in my opinion, is better than Photoshop in some aspects. Though I'd go for Cinellera GG Infinity, Kedenlive also comes with useful pro functions. You have covered almost every aspect of Linux Multimedia (which is almost unheard of) that nobody could explain better, that too, in a short time. Serious, and dedicated effort. I was shocked to find that this Pentium Gold is a Duo Core Four Thread running at 4 GHz! I bought a new HP Desktop, Pentium Gold, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $349 on sale. All I do is surf the web, streaming, and word processing, and this machine is amazing. • @paulmichaelfreedman8334
      @paulmichaelfreedman8334 3 года назад

A pc suitable for light and everyday needs (internet, email, browsing etc) is not expensive nowadays. SSD has become the most important compontent in the machine due to the extremely wide spectrum of user requirements. 8GB is about the minimum needed to give windows 10 a fluid experience, provided the SSD is of sufficient speed (sata-600 with at least 80% saturation, but preferably a nvme SSD directly on the PCIe bus - The SSD in my machine reaches 3.2 Gbytes/sec). The difference in speed between the slowest and fastest CPU has become very large indeed. If you're impressed with a Pentium Gold, you should see the benchmarks of an AMD EPYC with 128 cores and hyperthreading! Remember the Core I7 Gen1 from 2009? That CPU is still faster than the Pentium Gold, that's how wide the speed spectrum is of available CPUs nowadays. Only the newer CPUs are much more power efficient.
And it will not be much longer before the line between RAM and storage starts to fade, there are already memory modules that are both RAM and Storage available for servers. See it as the merging of the short term and long term memory.

I refreshed your channel like 2 times a second then I needed to go do some stuff and come back to see I missed the video :(

just let the video run and set the auto play to off. Then move the progress bar back and let it play. Most of the time it works and you won't have to wait and watch the archive.

That was the most hilariously recursive review I think I've seen. M.C. Escher would have loved it. A great idea to tailor packages for audiences that may not be technical (or have spare time) to search for compatible software to meet their needs. Nice to see that for this version, at least, Ubuntu's dropped the usual dreary Victorian maroon colour scheme for the desktop.

I can't deny that this has me quite exited. I noted that Ubunto Studio includes Scribus, the desktop publishing package we use a lot, and which I just installed on Raspberry Pi OS. I was interested to see that Linux regards Scribus as a graphics package, whereas I would have put it in the Office section; not that it matters, as long as I know where to find it. Ubunto Studio also has a lot of stuff I don't presently use, but I'd love to have it available, so this will definitely go on my next desktop PC.
You mentioned on a previous video - I forget which one - that the best way to contact you, & guarantee you'll see it, is in a comment on a video. I tried this the other day, but as I had a specific suggestion, I looked for the most relevant video to comment on. This video was quite old old, and as I feared, you probably never saw the comment, so I'll repeat it here...
The one thing I need to work out how to do on the Pi4b, is how to get it to talk to my Windows 10 LAN. I have a number of external HDDs connected to a Windows computer, and I need to work out how to access them in Raspberry Pi OS, plus I need access to the external drive, which is connected to the Pi on my Windows computers. I understand that, if I want to boot up the Pi with access to the most relevant Windows HDD, I need something with the unpleasant sounding name of fstab. OK, I know full well that I can work this out for myself, but I thought it might make for an interesting video.
On a related subject, I just re-watched your video on Linux distros, for an old Eee PC, and I'd love to see an update. A recent search uncovered something called Leeenux Linux, which you hadn't mentioned. I have an old Eee PC 1000HE, which I'd quite like to make useful again.
I'm curious, did Linux Mint switch to a different base Linux version at some point? I remember that you can't run Mint on the Eee PC, but I found some old videos by people who actually did just that - with Linux Mint 13 (if I remember correctly).

This is a very good looking distro. I like the creative focus also. I'm going to get this on a thumb drive and play around with the 'live' version. I don't know if it'll get me away from my beloved Linux Mint, but it's a good contender. Thanks for another great video.🙂

Chris, you were getting very close to an M.C.Escher like situation, showing and creating the video simultaneously... you escaped just in time. 👍

Surprised to see Konqueror wasn't installed out of the box -- but looking at the wikipedia page I'm happy to report that it does appear to be in active development. It's a close race between MATE and KDE as my favorite desktops - glad to see KDE is still looking sharp and useful.

Thanks for showing me another thing I wasn't aware existed. Saves me from installing generic Linux and searching for individual applications.

You might be able to reduce your render time a little by adding a separate basic GPU and disabling the on die one? Great upload, I've been looking for a better mixer over the pulse audio control package, preferably with an EQ over the entire audio output. Other solutions I've tried have been lacklustre at best. Off to check this out after I've finished typing this comment.

Great video, Chris! I have really enjoyed this old PC series. Keep up the good work!
One thing I have noticed though is that your website is a little outdated. For example, the storage section doesn't even talk about SSDs AFAIK.
Thanks for the content! I'm really looking forward to next Sunday :)

Thanks for this, and you are right -- I need to do a major re-write of the website. Unfortunately other matters are taking my time right now, but I do plan to spend some time on the website later in 2021.
