This was recorded before play started on Sunday but due to a technical error, it didn't post until late Sunday. I apologize for the delay and, of course, Taylor Fritz did defeat Daniil Medvedev.
@@henryshear5510 I meant the group last year, which was Djokovic, Tsitsipas and Rune. It was a surprise Sinner went undefeated in the group - a lot has changed in a year is what I meant.
Gill, Ruud is a finalist at 2022 ATP finals and semi finalist in the same in 2021. You keep repeating this wrongly in so many places. It's not just one semi. It's one semi and one final.
Your Newcombe group standings doesn't make sense. If Zverev beats Alcaraz and Rublev, and they both beat Ruud, who do they beat to get a 2-1 record? Whoever wins between them gets a 2-1 record and the other one gets 1-2
Yeah I mean obviously he typed it up wrong and didn’t pick up on it in the moment when reading it for the video. He said it correctly earlier: he has Zverev 3-0, Alcaraz 2-1, Rublev 1-2, and Ruud 0-3
Yep agreed. Sinner is a different animal compared to 2years ago. Medvedev is struggling the last 12months against top 10 opponents. Fritz and Demon have had good years. Would paint a more accurate picture if it was based on the last ~18 months
Great analysis Gill. Regardless of how the results play out, it really adds to the pleasure of watching the event unfold, as your info provides the context for each player.
Normally ATP Finals is really hard to predict, but this year, the field seems pretty rigid and predictable. Sinner is the clear front runner to win this thing and a strong favorite, with Alcaraz and Zverev ready to scoop it up if Sinner stumbles. Ruud/Medvedev/De Minaur feel like almost non-factors for one reason or another, while Fritz is stable but can’t really beat the top guys. Rublev maybe could pull an upset or two but he also can lose to anyone here and go 0-3. Feels like predicting anyone other than Sinner to win is just wrong at the moment, but Alcaraz/Zverev can make things interesting. Hopefully they both make the semis so we can get some elite matchups.
Ruud is my favorite player ever since his first next gern finals but honestly, this time I actually think it would have been very odd to not have predicted him to go 0:3 considering how bad he has been on hard and especially recently. I always hated the way he gets downplayed even though he reached 3 gs finals and multiple masters finals and was number 2 in the world. But let’s face it, he was never the second best player in those tournaments he got very lucky and him being 2nd in the world was horrendous. I did predict a semi final this tournament though, cause I kinda expected him to get atleast 1 lucky win against either uverev or Alcatraz, cause of sickness or similar
Why not? Because you guys haven't been paying attention to the quality of his play (despite the latest results all being losses). The moment I saw that he played great vs Thompson despite losing, as a Ruud fan it was time to smell the change. As for Metz, you all know he prioritised Turin, didn't you? Please pay attention to how the player plays rather than put so much stock into the fact that the results were losses.
My prediction is Sinner 3-0, AZ also 3-0, Alcaraz 2-1 and into the SFs. Ruud and Medvedev 0-3. The only match that does not seem to have an obvious outcome is Fritz vs. de Minaur and that will decide the 4th semifinalist. I thought this would be de Minaur, based on Fritz's horrendous level in Paris, but if Fritz plays well he should be in the SFs. Final Sinner vs. Zverev, Sinner 60%, Zverev 40% I can't remember an ATP finals that seemed so predictable and let's face it, boring, before hand. Let's hope we'll be surprised.
When you watch the practice sessions of both Jannik and Carlos, one thing is clear. The surface is fast and it forces Carlos to play differently while for Jannik it appears business as usual. With less time on the ball, Carlos goes cross court most of the time and drop shots are far and few in between. Carlos' serve is not as potent a weapon as Zverev's and Jannik's is. Carlos may eventually win one day but for now, i am not feeling good about his chances against Zverev and Jannik.
@ I trust in Carlos because Juan Carlos Ferrero ordered a court in his academy to the company that mounted Torino and Carlitos had much time practising there. Besides I always watch Carlos practises and he never shows his weapons to his rivals.
How do both Rublev and Alcaraz have 2-1, with Zverev being undefeated? That's mathematically impossible. Based on what you say, it's not even a typo xD
Hi Gill, I just want to point out that "Nastase", being a romanian name, it is spelled as it is written: not "nastas" but "Nastase", with that final E being the same E of, saying, "egg"
You know in your gut that if alcaraz really turns it on, the guy could win it all, but sinner is still the favorite. It's great to see zverev and a couple others as part of the mix because it gives a chance for some crazy results that could surprise everyone. Dynamic final
Q: If the ATP Finals is the showdown between the top 8 players of the whole year, shouldn't it be played on a court with speed&bounce closest to the _average_ of all those surfaces they get to qualify for it on?
Why? What has that got to do with it? It used to be that ATP Finals & Paris Masters aimed to be similar, so that players didnt have to read just. But then back in the day, WTFs used to be a pretty fast court when indoor hard courts were traditionally fast.
Remember the doubles matches are played on the same court as part of the entertainment, so the court speed should never be on the fast side. Nadal must accept it never being on clay or grass, but an easy-paced surface gives everyone a fair shot.
They slowed down Turin this year. Looks only ever so slightly faster than Bercy so about 46 in court speed index. I believe Sinner will defeat Alcaraz in a 3 setter like at 6 Kings
@ No, not sure what you’re seeing. All of Sinner’s opponents will have to overcome the crowd cheering on their countryman and world #1 more than a normal crowd, no?
@@SeanNgere The way you put it looks to me overstated. I didn't see for sure the same level of foul play and agitation as e.g. in Bercy. Obviously, mostly they will support Jannik, but this crowd will not play dirty.
What a shocker - you pick against Alcaraz again. When he adjusts to indoor hardcourts, will you EVER acknowledge how great he truly is. What is his 2024 record vs. Sinner? Oh yeah, 3-1.
LOL...GIll is an Alcaraz fan. He has predicted the Sinner vs Alcaraz match up wrongly every time. When he goes for Sinner, usually he loses, so you should be happy.
Yeah and Sinner won double his titles this year, same slams, but double masters and he'll win also atp finals. This is the current huge difference between Sinner real true n.1 and Alcaraz who is barely n.3

The H2H sheet reminded me that last year Sinner had a losing record against his whole group lol
Too bad that doesn’t matter this year but it’s certainly interesting
Not de Minaur, he still was undefeated against him. Fritz and Sinner had a tied h2h too, so it is only Medvedev.

Thanks Gil. You can check your pronunciation of Ilie Năstase on Wikipedia. John Newcombe in commentary always said the final 'ee'
Lendl used to have the US Open court installed at his house to practice on before the tournament.
